  • Between Moscow and Baku: National Literatures at the 1934 Congress of Soviet Writers
Between Moscow and Baku: National Literatures at the 1934 Congress of Soviet Writers by Kathryn Douglas Schild A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Harsha Ram, Chair Professor Irina Paperno Professor Yuri Slezkine Fall 2010 ABSTRACT Between Moscow and Baku: National Literatures at the 1934 Congress of Soviet Writers by Kathryn Douglas Schild Doctor of Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor Harsha Ram, Chair The breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991 reminded many that “Soviet” and “Russian” were not synonymous, but this distinction continues to be overlooked when discussing Soviet literature. Like the Soviet Union, Soviet literature was a consciously multinational, multiethnic project. This dissertation approaches Soviet literature in its broadest sense – as a cultural field incorporating texts, institutions, theories, and practices such as writing, editing, reading, canonization, education, performance, and translation. It uses archival materials to analyze how Soviet literary institutions combined Russia’s literary heritage, the doctrine of socialist realism, and nationalities policy to conceptualize the national literatures, a term used to define the literatures of the non-Russian peripheries. It then explores how such conceptions functioned in practice in the early 1930s, in both Moscow and Baku, the capital of Soviet Azerbaijan. Although the debates over national literatures started well before the Revolution, this study focuses on 1932-34 as the period when they crystallized under the leadership of the Union of Soviet Writers.

1st International Conference on Foreign Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics May 5-7 2011 Sarajevo RASUL RZA- INNOVATOR POET OF THE 20th CENTURY AZERBAIJANI LITERATURE Ph.D Etrabe GUL QAFQAZ UNĠVERSĠTY PEDAGOGY FACULTY DEPARTMENT OF ENGLĠSH LANGUAGE AND LĠTERATURE [email protected] Azerbaijan / Baki The prominent Azerbaijani poet Rasul Rza (real name Rasul Ibrahim oglu Rzayev, 1910–1981 ), who wrote his epics and poems in free measure played particular role in development of poetic conscience of Azerbaijani literature. In modern Azerbaijani poetry, with his different poetical thinking, special expression skills Rasul Rza engaged a special place as he brought a new breath to an Azerbaijani literature with his innovation. His poetry carried inspirational, motivational as well as thought provoking features. In today's globalized world poets often borrow styles, techniques and forms from diverse cultures and languages. It is undeniable that some forms of poetry are specific to particular cultures and genres, responding to the characteristics of the language in which the poet writes. In this regard the poetry of the venerable poet R.Rza was distinguished with philosophical lyricism, the vividness of the ideas and the emotions and original poetic characters. His philosophical poems from series of 'Rengler'('Colours"), lyrical epic poems 'Fuzuli' and "Gizilgul olmayaydi(If only there were not a rose)" are considered to be the best patterns of Azerbaijani poetry. Notwithstanding the new reference entailed adversities among writers, poets and readers towards him. Rasul Rza went through all hindrance and critiques, and as a deduction of his poetic experience he surmounted the difficulties and featured literary innovator school to the national literature.

  • The Land of Fire - Azerbaijan
Beat: Travel THE LAND OF FIRE - AZERBAIJAN AZERBAIJAN Baku, 14.02.2016, 20:08 Time USPA NEWS - Today, we would like to talk about a miraculous country of Azerbaijan with its unlimited natural resources, centuries- old culture, history and ancient people, whose lifestyle presents a unique and harmonious combination of the traditions and ceremonies of different cultures and civilizations. Azerbaijan is a geographical name. On the one hand this name is linked with the population, which lived in this region for thousand of years before our era, and who were mostly fire-worshippers. Local population considered that fire was their God and so they worshipped the fire. "Azer" means fire. The Turkic name "Azer" was used for this territory for a long time. The word "Azer" consists of two parts - "az" and "er". In Turkic languages, "az" means a good intention and a fate of success. Thus, the word "Azer" means "a brave man", "a brave boy", "the fire keeper". The word "Azerbaijan" originates from the name of an ancient Turkish tribe, who resided in those territories. Azerbaijan is one of the most ancient sites of humankind. The humankind was present here at every stage of their historical development. There were living settlements in Azerbaijan even at the earliest stages of humankind. Azerbaijan made its own contribution into the establishment of the current culture and civilization, progress and dialectics. The time kept a range of ancient archeological and architectural monuments for us. The ancient headstones, manuscripts and models of carpets, preserved to the present times from the ancient ages, can provide much information to those who can and want to read them.

Man In India, 97 (11) : 163-174 © Serials Publications OME TYPOLOGICAL FEATURES OF AZERBAIJANIAN MOSCOVITES WRITers’ PROSE Abuzar M. Bagirov* Abstract: The paper briefly describes the history of formation and today’s state of the Moscow Azerbaijanian literary environment. Moscow Azerbaijanian prose writers’ works can be divided into three main movements: traditional realism and its variations – critical, “socialistic”, lyric, confessionary; the second one is closely related to the literary trend of magical realism, which vividly expresses national colour in the Latin American associative-imaginative literary style; the third one is a new “mixed” trend of popular literature, which includes historical-adventure, philosophical-detective, as well as real modern “detective-countercultural” prose. Typological features of Azerbaijanian moscovites writers’ prose are examined in detail by the example of creativity works of one prose writer from each group (Rustam Ibragimbekov, Chingiz Guseynov, Samid Agaev). Keywords: Azerbaijanian Moscovites, literary environment, realism, mixed trend, prose, prose writer, Azerbaijanian literature, literary relations, prose works. INTRODUCTION Staying of a group of creative people of the same national culture in other territory and within other cultural environment has its own peculiarities, creates specific conditions for artistic creativity, summons up the potentials of all the participants of literary process, brings a distinct creative effect. Studying this phenomenon is a historical-literary, as well as partially
