THE CONSTITUTION FOR THE DIVE CLUB AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA

ARTICLE ONE. Name The name of our organization is the Crimson Dive Club.

ARTICLE TWO. Purpose Our purpose is to provide a community for students who are certified or hope to become certified divers. Our objectives are to create safe, educated and environmentally conscious divers. We aim to dive together as a community when we can and further our learning together.

ARTICLE THREE. Members Membership shall be extended to any and all UA students who have an interest in diving, whether they certified or not. Membership in registered student organizations shall be open to all students of The University of Alabama, without regard to race, religion, sex, disability, national origin, color, age disability, gender identity or expression, sexual identity, or veteran status except in cases of designated fraternal organizations exempted by federal law from Title IX regulations concerning discrimination on the basis of sex.

There will be five different level of membership for distinction during dive trips:

Shark Bait: non-certified or “scuba diver” certified (only certified to dive only with a ). Whale Sharks: Open Water or equivalent. Can dive to 60 feet Tiger Sharks: Advanced Open Water/ or equivalent. Can dive up to 90 feet and/or use Nitrox Great Whites: Certified and higher. Can dive to 90 feet. Blue Whales: Deep diver certified. Can dive up to 130 feet. (*note, this is the recreational limit. No dive trip will include dives deeper than this.)

ARTICLE FOUR. Office There are 5 offices. Anyone holding office must hold at least an certification or equivalent. (1) President. a. Term: One full school year (fall and spring semesters). b. Description of responsibilities: Lead the club, assist in planning dive trips and dive related community service opportunities. c. Selection procedures: after first year, selected by the former president based on application. d. Filling Vacancies: vote of members. (2) Vice-President a. Term: One full school year (fall and spring semesters). b. Description of responsibilities: Assist the president, plan dive trips and dive related community service opportunities. c. Selection procedures: after first year, held to a vote of secret ballot by current members at second meeting of the year. d. Filling vacancies: vote of current members. (3) Treasurer a. Term: One full school year (fall and spring semesters) b. Description of responsibilities: Manages funds, plans fundraisers and handles bookings for dive trips. c. Selection procedures: selected by president based on application and announced at the second meeting of the year. d. Filling vacancies: vote of current members. (4) Secretary a. Term: One full school year (fall and spring semesters). b. Description of responsibilities: takes notes at meetings, helps with club legislation, insurances, plans education workshops/ classes. c. Selection procedure: selected by president based on application and announced at the second meeting of the year. d. Filling Vacancies: vote of current members. (5) Dive Master a. Term: until resignation. b. Description of responsibilities: instruct new diver classes, DiscoverSCUBA workshops and furthering education classes. c. Selection Procedure: must be a PADI, NAUI or SSI certified divemaster or dive instructor. d. Filling Vacancies: this position is not required for the club to function.

ARTICLE FIVE. Meetings Meetings will be held on Mondays at 5pm. Special meetings will be emailed out to members at least 3 days beforehand.

ARTICLE SIX. Relationship The Crimson Divers shall have no relationship to or be controlled by any other local, state or national organization.

ARTICLE SEVEN. Finances All funds shall be given to OCEARCH in the event the club goes defunct or is terminated by The SOURCE.

ARTICLE EIGHT. Committees There shall be two standing committees, provided there is enough interest among members. (1) The Dive Trip Committee a. The Dive Trip committee shall be in charge of planning dive trips, making hotel and flight reservations, collecting money from members for said trips, coordinating with local dive shops or boat charters or guided dive trips. (2) The Education Committee a. The Education Committee shall be in charge of choosing dive classes and signing members up for further dive education classes. (3) Other committees, standing or special, shall be appointed by the President as the club deems necessary to carry on the work of the club.

ARTICLE NINE. Advisor Advisors shall be selected by the president and the vice president. Their term will last as long as they are at the university or until the resign from the position. Advisors responsibilities are to ensure the club promotes safe, conservative dive practices and is inclusive to all members. Advisors also settle all disputes between members and expel members who have broken rules.

ARTICLE TEN. Parliamentary Authority The rules contained in the current addition of Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised shall govern the association in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with these by-laws and special rules of order the association may adopt.

ARTICLE ELEVEN. Amendments This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of current members at a regularly scheduled meeting. The proposed amendment must be submitted in writing at the previous meeting and emailed out to all members one week before the vote.

ARTICLE TWELVE. By-Laws By-Laws may be added to this constitution at any regular meeting by a two thirds vote. The proposed By-Law must be presented at the previous meeting and also emailed out to all current members one week before the vote.

By-Laws for the Crimson Dive Club

Rules For Dive Trips 1. No excessive drinking the night before a dive. 2. You must have Dive Insurance to go on dive trips. 3. Stay hydrated throughout dive days. 4. Any diver attempting to dive beyond his or her limits or intentionally breaks any of the conservative dive practices listed below shall be barred from diving for the duration of the trip. 5. Repeated failure to follow the instruction of the advisor, executive board, the conservative dive practices or engaging in dangerous activities will result in automatic removal from the club. 6. A male and female may sleep in the same room or bed on club-sponsored trips IF AND ONLY IF they sign a consent form. a. The consent form must be signed separately so each party is given the opportunity to decline to do so without the presence of the other party. Conservative Dive Practices 1. Dive within your limits 2. No entering caves or caverns EVEN IF YOU ARE CAVE CERTIFIED. Cave dive on your own time. a. Caves/caverns are defined as anything with an overhead obstruction that will prevent you from going immediately to the surface. 3. Do not dive deeper than you are certified to dive. If this happens you will be suspended from remaining dives that day. 4. If you come up from a dive with less than 500psi, you will be suspended from the next dive. 5. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER STOP 6. The Crimson Dive Club will ONLY be doing no dives. This is determined by the recreational dive planner chart, eRDPml, or . 7. Always do a three-minute safety stop between 10 and 20 feet at the end of every dive. 8. Always dive with a buddy. Diving in a big group does not count. Everyone must have at least one or two buddies who are responsible for each other’s safety underwater. 9. Always dive in a or other protective clothing, even in warm water. This is to avoid injury by coral, jellyfish, or other sea life. 10. Always perform a check before the first dive of the day to ensure you are properly weighted. 11. Always perform buddy checks before every single dive. 12. YOUR SAFETY IS YOUR OWN (and your buddies) RESPONSIBILITY, NOT THE CLUB OFFICERS, NOT THE OTHER MEMBERS. 13. No diver shall use , even if you are certified to do so. 14. Dives deeper than 90 feet requires the use of a or other alternative air source.

Amendments 1. These by laws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of active club members.
