Project Profile Ex HMAS Adelaide Scuttling Client NSW Land & Property Management Authority Location Glebe Island Wharf No. 2, Sydney Harbour, New South Wales Duration 18 months, 2011 Contract Scuttling of Ex HMAS Adelaide Vessel for use as an Artificial Reef Cost $6.5 Million Project Overview Stripping and preparation of former war ship to a virtual skeleton and scuttling off the NSW mid coast. This ship participated in the 1990/91 Gulf War, peacekeeping operations in East Timor in 1999 and deployed to the Arabian Gulf as part of the International Coalition against Terrorism in 2001 and 2004. She was Australia’s first guided-missile frigate and was home-ported in Western Australia. McMahon Services were contracted by NSW Land & Property Management Authority to prepare the vessel for scuttling off the NSW mid coast. This was an enormous task – stripping a fully operational war ship to make it a virtual skeleton. All environmental hazards required total removal. We had to develop methods to make the vessel do what it was never design to do…sink. The vessel was littered with specially cut holes to let water in and air out when it was scuttled. The main task was to penetrate bulkheads and clearing pathways through the vessel so that divers had enough room to manoeuvre through safe thoroughfares. THE DATABASE The Database displayed on pages 207 - 219 is, largely, self-explanatory but it should be remembered that only the names of those casualties from Neston, Parkgate, Little Neston, Ness, Burton and Puddington have been included providing that they meet the conditions outlined in section Ⓐ Who’s been included - and who’s not on pages 3 - 6 of the Introduction to this work. For a consideration of some of this information see A BRIEF SYNTHESIS AND ANALYSIS OF THE DATA on pages 267 - 283. A total of 171 different men are recorded in the Database; each man has a List Number (shown in purple) which indicates the order in which their entry appears in this work and a Page Number (shown in red) which identifies the starting page in this work for their entry. The entries within the Database begin with those individuals commemorated on the memorial plaques within the churches of Neston and Burton. The plaques in Neston Parish Church record names on two lists although, for reasons now unknown, the names are not in strict alphabetical order; in this work, and on the Database, this irregularity has been retained. Following the church-commemorated names a significant section of the Database is devoted to other ‘locals’ who died as a consequence of WW1 but who, for whatever reason, are not commemorated at a church in Neston or Burton. This size (7 threads) allows for a DIN to yoke conversion. 300 DIN: Thread depth in a DIN valve that provides the most secure (9 threads) connection and can withstand 300 BAR pressure. 5 nines pure: 99.999% pure, as in a gas. 50-50: Gas mix of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrogen used for decompression gas. 6351-T6 Aluminum Alloy: Alloy that has had problems with tank ruptures. Absolute Pressure: Total pressure being exerted on a diver At sea level Absolute pressure is 1 ATA and it increases by 1 ATA for each 33fsw (34ffw). Vessel History The oceanographic survey vessel USNS Wyman (T-AGS-34) was launched on October 30, 1969 at the Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City, Michigan and placed in service at the Boston Naval Shipyard on November 3, 1971. It is the second naval vessel to bear the name. The first was a WWII-era destroyer escort named for U.S. Navy Ensign Eldon Wyman, a casualty of the sinking of the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) at Pearl Harbor in 1941. USNS Wyman honors U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Robert H. Wyman, who commanded the Navy’s Hydrographic Office from 1870 until his death in 1882. Under Wyman's eight-year leadership, the office began a systematic and sustained program of world-wide charting and surveying, the precursor of the U.S. Navy's contemporary global oceanographic research effort. Wyman was designed and built to conduct hydrographic and oceanographic studies under the technical direction of the Oceanographer of the Navy, but was operated by a civilian crew. Wyman was one of four sister ships of the Silas Bent class, which included USNS Silas Bent (T- AGS-26), USNS Kane (T-AGS-27) and USNS Wilkes (T-AGS-33). All vessels of this class were initially assigned to the Military Sea Transportation Service,1 which later became the Navy’s 1 MSTS was a post-World War II combination of four predecessor government agencies that handled similar sealift functions.
