Chapter Two Internationalization of Japanese Cinema How Japan Was Different from the West and above Asia before Globalization With the end of the war — which to the Japanese of that period really meant the end of a way of life — the coming of the Occupation, the resultant restrictions, and the related difficulties within the industry, one might think that the films of the period would have, at best, merely reflected the confusion of the era. That they reflected something much more is another proof of the often amazing resilience of the Japanese people and of their ability to fashion something uniquely Japanese from the most diverse of foreign ideas. (Anderson and Richie 1982 [1959]: 174) Two days after the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty, on 10 September 1951, Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon won the grand prize (Golden Lion) at the Venice Film Festival. This victory came as a big sur- prise to American-occupied Japan (Anderson and Richie 1982 [1959]: 233) and when the news spread Kurosawa became a national hero overnight. This was a key event, which helped to restore national con- fidence among the war-defeated Japanese (Sato 1995b: 233). Rashomon was internationally distributed by RKO, a major Hollywood company, and received an American Academy Award the following year. Most importantly, this event symbolized Japan’s return to the international community, and kick-started a phase of internationalization of Japanese cinema and the Japanese film industry. The international success of Rashomon put Japanese critics under pressure to explain why this film, largely ignored by domestic audi- ences and critics alike, was so highly praised in the West. -

Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally. -

ASIAN SYMPHONIES A Discography Of CDs And LPs Prepared by Michael Herman Edited by Stephen Ellis KOMEI ABE (1911-2006, JAPAN) Born in Hiroshima. He studied the cello with Heinrich Werkmeister at the Tokyo Music School and then studied German-style harmony and counterpoint with Klaus Pringsheim, a pupil of Gustav Mahler, as well as conducting with Joseph Rosenstock. Later, he was appointed music director of the Imperial Orchestra in Tokyo, and the musicians who played under him broadened his knowledge of traditional Japanese Music. He then taught at Kyoto's Elizabeth Music School and Municipal College of the Arts. He composed a significant body of orchestral, chamber and vocal music, including a Symphony No. 2 (1960) and Piccolo Sinfonia for String Orchestra (1984). He became head of the composition department of the conservatory in 1923. He later studied at the Chicago Musical College in 1931 under Wesley LaViolette. He composed orchestral and chamber works but is best-known for his songs. This document intends to be a performance guide to Miki’s Sohmon III: for Soprano, Marimba and Piano (1988). The first chapter provides an introduction to the composer and his work. It also introduces methods of intercultural and artistic borrowing in the Japanese arts, and it defines the four basic principles of Japanese aesthetics. The second chapter focuses on the interpretation and pronunciation of Sohmon III’s song text. -

Student Concerto Winner's Concert
Conductor Nobuyoshi Yasuda, a native of Takarazuka, Japan, began his musical studies on the violin at the age of three. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Soai University in Japan and a Master of Music degree from Indiana University, Bloomington. Mr. Yasuda has been an active violin soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Japan. His interest in conducting was sparked by his desire to find new ways to share his passion for music with people. Mr. Yasuda was appointed as Orchestra Director at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1991, Music Director of the Chippewa Valley Symphony in 1993, and Associate Conductor of the Grand Teton Music Festival in 1999. His performance of Milhaud's Création du monde at the festival was broadcast on National Public Radio, Performance Today in July 2001. He guest conducted the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. With the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, he has participated in the educational outreach project, "Arts across Minnesota" granted by the Minnesota State Arts Board, to have residency in a high school; he led 'side by side rehearsal' and gave a concert. Mr. Yasuda made his international conducting debut in Germany with Das Philharmonie Orchester des NDR-Hannover in May, 2003. And in March 2004, he made his Japanese debut with the Osaka Philharmonic. The University Symphony Orchestra is a sixty member student ensemble performing the symphonic repertoire of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Under the direction of Nobuyoshi Yasuda, the ensemble presents an on-campus concert each semester, performs annually in a tour to high schools in Wisconsin and Minnesota, performs with the Symphonic Choir, accompanies one fully-staged opera or musical play each year, and each spring is one of the featured ensembles at UW-Eau Claire’s nationally-acclaimed Student Concerto Viennese Ball. -
