Lilit Mikayelyan Depictions of Glory Wreaths in the Early Medieval Armenian Sculpture and Their Parallels in the Art of Byzantium and Sasanian Iran The symbolism of the wreath offered as a sign of victory and glory is well known in the Antique culture from which it was transferred to the Christian art. In Christianity the wreath became the symbol of an award given to righteous men who had reached the Heavenly Kingdom, the symbol of martyrdom and victory on sin. Numerous pictures of wreaths are known on early Christian sarcophaguses, ivory bindings, mosaics, architectural décor and so on. In the Armenian art of the 5th – 7th centuries they can be seen in the relief sculptures of churches and tetrahedral Stelae, mostly in the scenes of Baptism or Praising of the Holy Virgin and Christ. On Armenian monuments wreaths have several iconographic variants, a part of which goes back to late Antique and early Byzantine samples, representing stylized pictures of laurel wreaths or wreaths- crowns, as attributes of martyrdom and glory.

The purpose was to increase the knowledge of these processes and to analyse them from a validity perspective in order to contribute to the discussion of whether the “right” athletes are selected to participate in teams, competitions and games and whether the “right” athletes win. The rule and judging systems were investigated in the judged sports acroski and rhythmic gymnastics. Information was gathered through individual interviews with two judges, two coaches, and four elite athletes from each of the sports, and in addition to this the respective sport’s rule systems, judging manuals, meeting protocols and historical documents were studied.

  • Tall Armenian Tales: a Guide to the “Art” of Heritage Thievery KAMRAN IMANOV * Tall Armenian Tales: a Guide to the “Art” of Heritage Thievery
KAMRAN IMANOV Tall Armenian Tales: a Guide to the “Art” of Heritage Thievery KAMRAN IMANOV * Tall Armenian Tales: a Guide to the “Art” of Heritage Thievery The book - “Tall Armenian Tales”, presented to the reader’s attention, consists of two thematic sections. Chapter I, entitled “I came, I saw, I... stole”, is about the misappropriation and armenization of intellectual property of the Azerbaijani people, intellectual plagiarism of the Azerbaijani folklore, dastans (epics) and other epic works, the desire to seize the Azerbaijani bayati (Azerbaijani folk poems), proverbs and sayings. The book also narrates about the “armenization” of tales, anecdotes, music and other samples of folk genre. What is the common of these various manifestations of Armenian plagiary shown in the chapter “I came, I saw, ..., I stole”? The fact is that, firstly, these “tales” do not have an Armenian origin, but only an Armenian presentation. These tales are alien to the Armenian people; in addition, these are the same “anecdotes” in allegorical meaning of this term in the form of absurdities - false statements shown in Chapter II - “The Theatre of Absurd.” PREFACE .............................................................................................. 6 CHAPTER I. “I came, I saw,.. .1 stole”: about the Armenian tradition of misappropriation of the Azerbaijani cultural heritage ............................................................... 8 §1. “I c a m e , w h i c h briefly tells about the mass settlement of the Armenians in the South Caucasus .............................. 9 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS §2. Eiland and Dickran Kouymjian https://doi.org/10.1093/gao/9781884446054.article.T004089 Published online: 2003 updated bibliography, 26 May 2010 Country in the southern part of the Transcaucasian region; its capital is Erevan. Present-day Armenia is bounded by Georgia to the north, Iran to the south-east, Azerbaijan to the east and Turkey to the west. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR, but historically its land encompassed a much greater area including parts of all present-day bordering countries (see fig.). At its greatest extent it occupied the plateau covering most of what is now central and eastern Turkey (c. 300,000 sq. km) bounded on the north by the Pontic Range and on the south by the Taurus and Kurdistan mountains. During the 11th century another Armenian state was formed to the west of Historic Armenia on the Cilician plain in south-east Asia Minor, bounded by the Taurus Mountains on the west and the Amanus (Nur) Mountains on the east. Its strategic location between East and West made Historic or Greater Armenia an important country to control, and for centuries it was a battlefield in the struggle for power between surrounding empires. Periods of domination and division have alternated with centuries of independence, during which the country was divided into one or more kingdoms. • Reducing Transboundary Degradation in the Kura-Aras Basin
UNDP Project Document Governments of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia United Nations Development Programme United Nations Office for Project Services Reducing Transboundary Degradation in the Kura-Aras Basin The Project will assist the Kura-Aras riparian states to 1) identify the principal threats and root causes of the trans-boundary water resources of the Kura Aras-River Transboundary Basin and 2) develop and implement a sustainable programme of policy, legal and institutional reforms and investments to address these threats. Balancing overuse and conflicting uses of water resources in transboundary surface and groundwater basins is seen as the critical issue in the basin and will be a principal focus of project attention from the very outset of project related activities. The Project will create synergies with and build upon a range of initiatives being undertaken by the countries themselves and those of bi-lateral and multi- lateral donors that have given priority to the Basin. The long-term development/environmental goal of the project is sustainable development of the Kura-Aras River Basin enhanced through ecosystem-based Integrated Water Resource Management approaches. The project objective is to improve the management of the Kura-Aras River Transboundary Basin through the implementation of a sustainable programme of policy, legal and institutional reforms and investment options using the Trans-boundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and Strategic Action Programme (SAP) process. In order to achieve this objective, the project will update the TDA, support National IWRM plans which will be the base of the SAP, undertake a range of public involvement and awareness activities focusing on trans-boundary activities, and undertake demonstration projects that implement key aspects of the SAP.

Houri Berberian. In Roving Revolutionaries: Armenians and the Connected Revolutions in the Russian, Iranian and Ottoman Worlds. Oakland, CA: University of California Press, 2019. Pp. 320. Paper. $34.95. Middle East historian and Chair of Armenian Studies at the University of California, Irvine, Professor Berberian uses a transnational approach to examine the Russian Revolution (1905), the Iranian Revolution (1908) and the Ottoman (Young Turk) Revolution (1905-11), and focuses on the role of Armenian revolutionaries in connecting these revolutionary upheavals and histories. Berberian shows how Armenians simultaneously participated in all three revolutions due to its geographical location perched between Russia, Iran and Ottoman Anatolia. Specifically, she shows how Armenian intellectuals and revolutionaries utilized modern technology to facilitate the spread of information, revolutionary literature, ideologies, and weapons within the empires, while revolutionizing their own ethnic community. Moreover, these revolutionaries were linked to a global network of Armenian diaspora, using steam ships, telegraphs and an increased access to printing technology, which profoundly contributed to the movements and migration of revolutionaries in Iran, Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Berberian first isolates the revolutions as separate entities then connects them through Armenian revolutionaries and intellectuals. She shows how these uprisings were connected through the systemic circulation of ideologies, Armenian activities, objects, arms, and print. In the early twentieth century, Armenians were a small minority population within all three empires, yet their political impact was profound. Global philosophies and ideologies of the nineteenth century, such as liberalism and socialism, were reaching the Middle East and the Southern Caucasus. Berberian argues Armenians were at the forefront of these new ideologies, which allowed a modern revolutionary movement of their own.
