Exact wording is however given for all pre-1837, and some other memorials, which are in double inverted commas, in most instances with obliques ‘/’ indicating the ends of lines). Marked with an asterick “*” are churchyard memorials which were recorded by an unknown person in about 1974, copies of which are given on the “Somerset Monumental Inscriptions Index” database, Somerset & Dorset Family History Society. Although thought to be incomplete, these provided fairly full coverage, only omitting a few memorials, most notably no.21. Of more concern, I discovered a number of errors in these copies, which I have corrected. In order to tie my copies in with these, I have only recorded memorials including anybody dying in and before 1974, although other people on the same stones have been added for after that year. Some more modern memorials inside the church have also been included. Wambrook was a Dorset parish until 1896, when it was transferred to Somerset. There are no memorials recorded in Hutchins “History of Dorset”, 3rd.Edition (1861-70). CHURCH INTERIOR Just comprising a chancel, nave and tower, with a vestry on north side of the chancel. The entrance is now from the west through the tower. Two former porches south and north of the nave have respectively been converted into a small chapel and a ‘font’ alcove. PARISH OF WAMBROOK 1881 CENSUS RG11/2385 The census was carried out on the night of 3rd April 1881 and closely followed the format of the previous censuses taken between 1851 and 1871. The head of the family had to be defined as did the relationship to the head of each person staying in the house that night. The gender of each person was also recorded. Accurate ages were required throughout and were taken from the person’s last birthday. For infants under one year, the age was recorded either in months (m), weeks (w) or days (d). The rank, profession or occupation of each person was recorded and “Where Born” had to be completed by giving the county and town or parish of birth. An analysis of the recordings for Wambrook is tabled below: Age Group Under 10 68 25.8% 10 to 19 61 23.2% 20 to 29 26 9.9% 30 to 39 41 15.6% 40 to 49 19 7.2% 50 to 59 17 6.5% 60 to 69 22 8.4% 70 to 79 6 2.3% Over 80 3 1.1% Total 263 The census recorded 140 males (53.2% of total) and 123 females (46.8%) There were 48 occupied dwellings, which produced an average of 5.5 persons per dwelling. One uninhabited dwelling was recorded at Higher Wambrook. The transcript was made by members of CHRG from copies of the original documents. When extracting information from this transcript, the following points should be noted: * In 1881 Wambrook formed part of the County of Dorset, as the transfer to Somerset did not occur until 1896.

  • Parish of Chardstock Marriages
PARISH OF CHARDSTOCK MARRIAGES - INFORMATION ADDITIONAL TO THAT CONTAINED IN THE PARISH REGISTERS OF ALL SAINTS OR CHARDSTOCK, ST. ANDREW’S This list refers to people with a known Chardstock connection. In September, 1752 Britain changed over from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar and at the same time the official start of the year was changed from 25th March to 1st January. This transcription records marriages between 1st January and 24th March in those years prior to 1752 as, for example, 12.3.1661/2. The first year (1661) is the date under the Julian or Old Style calendar and the second (1662) that under the Gregorian or New Style calendar. 25.5.1655 Stephan MERYMONTH of Chardstoke, Dorset and Mary MANNING of Chard, Somerset Source: COMMONWEALTH MARRIAGES SOMERSET 1653 TO 1656 - From Register of Marriages performed by Henry Bonner Esq., Justice of the Peace, of Waston in the Parish of Combe St. Nicholas. 6.6.1655 At Lyme Regis, John HARDY and Mary SAVERY, both of Chardstock.
