The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries Notes Bibliography Preface Myanmar, or Burma as the nation has been known throughout history, is one of the major countries following Theravada Buddhism. In recent years Myanmar has attained special eminence as the host for the Sixth Buddhist Council, held in Yangon (Rangoon) between 1954 and 1956, and as the source from which two of the major systems of Vipassana meditation have emanated out into the greater world: the tradition springing from the Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw of Thathana Yeiktha and that springing from Sayagyi U Ba Khin of the International Meditation Centre. This booklet is intended to offer a short history of Buddhism in Myanmar from its origins through the country's loss of independence to Great Britain in the late nineteenth century. I have not dealt with more recent history as this has already been well documented. To write an account of the development of a religion in any country is a delicate and demanding undertaking and one will never be quite satisfied with the result. This booklet does not pretend to be an academic work shedding new light on the subject. It is designed, rather, to provide the interested non-academic reader with a brief overview of the subject. The booklet has been written for the Buddhist Publication Society to complete its series of Wheel titles on the history of the Sasana in the main Theravada Buddhist countries. -

They are one of the important sources of reference service in a library. They give not only information about people who are or were well-known, their birth, deaths and the descriptions of their lives and achievements but also inspiration and entertainment for readers. Biographical sources reflect a person’s experiences thoughts and feelings. The paper includes background history of biographical sources and their types, characteristics and usefulness as a reference work. It uses Survey research method was used to collect the biographical sources. It is provided to librarians for reference service and readers to know valuable and useful biographical information. Key words: biographical sources, reference sources Introduction Most people who read books tend to have a particular type of book they favor. Some of the readers read novels, some even focus on a certain genre, like science fiction or mysteries. Some read extensively and largely exclusively in their area of career focus. Reading a great biographical books can be allowed the reader to see the world in new ways. Today, libraries give many services to readers and scholars. After collecting the information sources, they are arranged symmetrically according to classification scheme. These procedures are called technical services that include collection, cataloguing and classification of library materials. Librarians provide many services for readers and scholars depending on library materials especially books. Main function of a library to fulfill is the need of users that at right time and right information. -

Recognizing its limited knowledge of China and the Chi- nese, British Burma relied in the early days on experiences from other colonies to govern its Chinese immigrants and to handle Sino-Burmese border issues. The transfer of colonial knowledge, however, proved insufficient when the state witnessed increasing localization at the turn of the twentieth century. -

1 The Political Conditions During Bagan Period Dr.Sandar Win* Abstract Bagan reached to the status of the “State” in the 11th century during the reign of King Anawrahta by passing through the status of the various levels of districts and taiks in the emergence of Bagan Empire. Bagan Empire was ruled by the successive Kings since the reign of Aniruddha (a) Anawrahta. In the relations with the neighbouring countries during Bagan period, there were relations also with India and Ceylon. In the diplomatic relations, the Chinese (Mongols) had launched three aggressive wars against Bagan during the reign of King Nara Thiha Pate. Shin Disapramok stone inscription was inscribed because he was sent an Envoy and could settele the matter successfully. In the inscription, it contained six methods of diplomacy. Although Bagan Kings were autocratic, they ruled in accordance with the ten precepts incumbent on a King. At the end of the 13th century, the administrative power fell into the hand of the three Shan brothers and the Bagan Empire had collapsed. Keywords: Bagan Empire, Anawrahta, autocratic Introduction Bagan was the first empire of Myanmar. The culture and architecture of Bagan could be seen until nowadays. Furthermore, Bagan period was an important period according to political, economic, religion and culture. Pyus were strong in the central Myanmar prior to Myanmars. But the Pyus became weak because the Nan Chou destroyed the Pyu Capital in A.D.832. At the time when there was no strong and powerful people in Central Myanmar, Myanmar took position. Myanmar people expanded to invade from the district to the division and division to the State. -

BUDDHISM AND WRITTEN LAW: DHAMMASATTHA MANUSCRIPTS AND TEXTS IN PREMODERN BURMA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Dietrich Christian Lammerts May 2010 2010 Dietrich Christian Lammerts BUDDHISM AND WRITTEN LAW: DHAMMASATTHA MANUSCRIPTS AND TEXTS IN PREMODERN BURMA Dietrich Christian Lammerts, Ph.D. Cornell University 2010 This dissertation examines the regional and local histories of dhammasattha, the preeminent Pali, bilingual, and vernacular genre of Buddhist legal literature transmitted in premodern Burma and Southeast Asia. It provides the first critical analysis of the dating, content, form, and function of surviving dhammasattha texts based on a careful study of hitherto unexamined Burmese and Pali manuscripts. It underscores the importance for Buddhist and Southeast Asian Studies of paying careful attention to complex manuscript traditions, multilingual post- and para- canonical literatures, commentarial strategies, and the regional South-Southeast Asian literary, historical, and religious context of the development of local legal and textual practices. Part One traces the genesis of dhammasattha during the first and early second millennia C.E. through inscriptions and literary texts from India, Cambodia, Campå, Java, Lakå, and Burma and investigates its historical and legal-theoretical relationships with the Sanskrit Bråhmaˆical dharmaßåstra tradition and Pali Buddhist literature. It argues that during this period aspects of this genre of written law, akin to other disciplines such as alchemy or medicine, functioned in both Buddhist and Bråhmaˆical contexts, and that this ecumenical legal culture persisted in certain areas such as Burma and Java well into the early modern period. -

How Buddhism was introduced into Myanmar is discussed. How the Myanmars professed a mixture of Buddhism and their traditional beliefs is explained. Among the seven kings who supported the Religion in Myanmar, two—Kings Badon and Mindon—reigned in the late Konbaung Period. King Badon’s personal views and progressive ideas concerning the Religion are touched upon. How the kings purified the Religion partly to facilitate their rule is discussed. The monks formed separate sects in the late Konbaung period even though they did not differ from one another in robes, literature, doctrine or goal. However, the kings’ support was important for a sect to stand on its own. In the late Konbaung Period, the Fifth Buddhist Synod, which was the first Buddhist Synod held in Myanmar, was convened. That the Buddhist synod convened by King Mindon was not necessary for the Religion and that he convened it only to defy the British who had annexed Lower Myanmar and to assume the title Pyinsama Thangayanatin Mintaya (the Convener of the Fifth Buddhist Synod) are discussed. -

Theoretical background: PanchronPanchronyy and "Diahoric" StudiesStudies This paper aims at introducing to the panchronic perspective based on a specific problem of historical linguistics in Burmese. Its purpose is to demonstrate that a diachrony is not exclusively indicative of systemic internal contingencies but also a medium through which a socio-cultural situation of the past surfaces. In this sense, I will argue that both internal and external factors of a specific diachrony belong to both obverses of a same panchronic coin and that a combined analysis of both diachronic factors generates powerful explanatory models. -

Since that time, people of Myanmar made their effort to develop and prosper Buddhism having studied Pāli, the language of Theravāda Buddhism. In Bagan period, they attempted to create Burmese scripts and writing system imitating to Pāli. From that time Myanmar Literature gradually had been developed up to present. In this paper it is shed a light about influence of Pāli on Myanmar Literature. Keywords Burmese literature, Ancient literature. Impact of Pāli on the Development of Myanmar Literature Literary and archaeological sources as founded in Śriksetra (Hmawza, Pyay), Suvannabhūmi (Thaton), Rakhine and Bagan proved that Buddhism introduced Myanmar since the first century AD and there prospered in about 4th to 5th century AD. Pyu people recorded Pāli extracts in Pyu scripts, Mon also recorded Pāli in their own scripts and Myanmar recorded Pāli in Myanmar script. In this way, people of Myanmar made their effort to develop and prosper Buddhism having studied Pāli, the language of Theravāda Buddhism.
