A Thesis. English Education Program, Faculty of Teacher and Training Education, Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. 2017 Language is very important in human life. It is used to communicate to others. Song lyric is one of the examples of the literature. It is hard to understand song lyrics because it often contains figurative languages. Figurative languages are words or expressions whose meanings are different from their literal meanings. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of figurative languages found in Taylor Swift’s album Speak Now and to describe the application of figurative languages found in Taylor Swift’s album Speak Now in teaching reading at the eleventh grade of Senior High School. In this research, the data are taken from song lyrics in Taylor Swift’s album Speak Now. The researcher uses description-qualitative research because the researcher wants to explain its figurative languages found. In collecting the data, the researcher searched the songs and the scripts. Read and understood the song lyrics in Taylor Swift’s album Speak Now. While in analyzing the data, the researcher identified the data based on the types of figurative languages, classified the data based on the types of figurative languages, discussing selected the data, described the application of figurative languages found in Taylor Swift’s album Speak Now in teaching reading, and made conclusion and suggestion. The result of this study shows there are six types of figurative languages in Taylor Swift’s album Speak Now. There are 18 hyperboles (37,5%), 12 similes (25%), 11 symbols (22,92%), 5 personifications (10,42%), 1 metaphor (2,08%.), and 1 synecdoche (2,08%.).     “UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Music Education—Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT “UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill With the intent of informing the practice of music educators who teach songwriting in K– 12 and college/university classrooms, the purpose of this research is to examine how professional songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee—one of songwriting’s professional “hubs”—teach and learn from one another in the process of engaging in collaborative songwriting. This study viewed songwriting as a form of “situated learning” (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and “situated practice” (Folkestad, 2012) whose investigation requires consideration of the professional culture that surrounds creative activity in a specific context (i.e., Nashville). The following research questions guided this study: (1) How do collaborative songwriters describe the process of being inducted to, and learning within, the practice of professional songwriting in Nashville, (2) What teaching and learning behaviors can be identified in the collaborative songwriting processes of Nashville songwriters, and (3) Who are the important actors in the process of learning to be a collaborative songwriter in Nashville, and what roles do they play (e.g., gatekeeper, mentor, role model)? This study combined elements of case study and ethnography. Data sources included observation of co-writing sessions, interviews with songwriters, and participation in and observation of open mic and writers’ nights.

Code, § 266i, subd. (a)). The court held a bench trial and found it to be true that defendant committed the offenses while out on bail. (Pen. Code, § 12022.1, subd. (b).) The court sentenced defendant to the midterm of four years on the pimping count, stayed imposition of the sentence on the pandering count, and imposed, but stayed, a two year on-bail enhancement. On appeal, defendant raises a single issue: that the court erred by permitting the People’s expert to testify that certain text messages sent from defendant to individuals other than the particular prostitute at issue were consistent with pimping activity. Defendant contends this was improper character evidence under Evidence Code section 1101. We conclude the evidence was relevant to rebut the defense that the prostitute was merely defendant’s girlfriend — a nonpropensity basis for relevance — and thus we affirm.

Even ten years later, the memories vividly remain of my first concert at Thompson-Boling Arena when I was 8 years old. For as long as I can remember, I have loved Taylor Swift’s music. My mom would listen to her music as she cleaned around the house and eventually, Swift became my favorite singer. 2 Taylor Swift began singing with more of a country style and she has slowly transitioned into the pop genre now. She had released a few single songs, a Christmas music album “Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection” in 2007, and one country album of music entitled “Fearless” (2008), before “Speak Now” (2010) was released. In 2010, when I saw her concert, she was doing the Speak Now album Tour. This was labeled as a country album; however, it was noticeable she may have been mixing in some pop throughout her music. I prefer her singing country style music but still enjoy her current pop music. She had only been in the music industry for a few years before making this transition of music style. Swift focused specifically on releasing music of the country genre from 2006-2010. The beginning transition point for Taylor Swift’s style of music was seen throughout the years 2010- 2012. Before her current albums, she sang solely country songs, and pop was a stretch for her original music. From 2014 on, pop is the only genre she focused on.

    Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace: The Constitutionality of States Prohibiting and Not Recognizing Same-Sex Marriages by Jessica Hoff Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the King Scholar Program Michigan State University College of Law under the direction of Professor Philip Pucillo Spring, 2015 INTRODUCTION The United States Supreme Court has granted certiorari to resolve the issues of whether states can limit marriage to between one man and one woman, and whether states must recognize same-sex marriages validly created in other states. 1 The Court has already struck as unconstitutional the Defense of Marriage Acts’ federal definition of marriage as between one man and one woman in United States v. Windsor.2 Dissenting in that opinion, Justice Scalia fatefully pronounced that he was waiting for the other shoe to drop—that is, that he believes the Court’s language has already laid the groundwork for the downfall of the ability of states individually to define marriage as between one man and one woman.3 However, Windsor and other Supreme Court precedents do not necessarily compel the conclusion that states must permit the solemnization of same-sex marriages. Nor do those precedents necessarily compel the conclusion that states must recognize such marriages that have been validly created in other states. Part I of this Note focuses on the implications of the Court’s recognition of marriage as a fundamental right in Loving v. Virginia. 4 That Part argues that, although marriage is a fundamental right, same-sex marriage does not fall within that definition. Therefore, state laws limiting marriage to between one man and one woman should not be subject to strict scrutiny as a matter of substantive due process.

This was inspired by the Cut-Up technique, an aleatory literary technique where a written text is cut up word-by-word and then completely rearranged, resulting in a new text. This technique can be traced back to the Dadaists in the 1920s, a group of avant-garde artists located primarily in Europe. Since then, the Cut-Up technique has been used in a variety of other contexts. On our pages, we have taken a popular song from each artist, then used the Dadaist cut-up technique to scramble the lyrics and create a new text. We chose to do this to pay homage to and remind us of the avant-garde artists and the history of avant-garde zines. So, if you would like, take a shot at guessing the songs. The answers are found on the final page. We hope you enjoy our little game and, in the process, are reminded of how all zines began.
