By McKinley May Under the mentorship of Joe Pellegrino ABSTRACT This paper examines the symbolism of the colors black, white, and red from ancient times to modern. It explores ancient myths, the Grimm canon of fairy tales, and modern film and television tropes in order to establish the continuity of certain symbolisms through time. In regards to the fairy tales, the examination focuses solely on the lesser-known stories, due to the large amounts of scholarship surrounding the “popular” tales. The continuity of interpretation of these three major colors (black, white, and red) establishes the link between the past and the present and demonstrates the influence of older myths and beliefs on modern understandings of the colors.

    Everlore: Two Albums that Accurately Portray the Melancholic Mood of a Pandemic By Jannie Gowdy, 12 When I was seven years old, my mom took me to a Taylor Swift concert in Des Moines. I was obsessed with the artist, and I showed up with a paper guitar and my favorite dress on, elated that I was going to finally see my role model perform. My greatest hope was fulfilled: Taylor put on a phenomenal show, gliding over the audience and displaying her powerful vocals. I left there holding her in the highest regard. Over the course of her career, I followed her albums as she went from one era to the next, loving every style change. After all, Taylor Swift is the queen of evolving her discography. She started out with country roots in her debut album, Fearless, and Speak Now, and progressed to pop in Red and 1989. While her next two albums, Reputation and Lover, are also categorized as pop albums as well, they each have a very unique tone displayed by differing characteristics. Reputation’s electro-backing and musical mixing songs are powerful and fierce, while Lover contrasted sharply with softer instrumentals and a self-discovery theme. While Swift’s style is characterized by more specific ‘eras’ and there is always fan speculation about her next era, no one expected her to go the route of indie-folk music. On July 23rd, Swift announced n social media platforms that her eighth album would be dropping at midnight. She wrote in an accompanying statement, "Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed." She went on to say, "My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world.” The sixteen songs she released (later releasing “The Lakes” as a bonus track) incorporated bleak and soft themes, reflecting life during the pandemic.

This day has been set aside to honor the sacrifices made by our fallen comrades who, long ago, fought on the battlefields of Italy and France to prove our allegiance to·our country--America. On this memorial day, we should recall the feeling oftogethemess--the bond of camaraderie that existed within our ranks that helped us survive the difficult ordeals we struggled through. No matter how high the mountains in Italy or how deep the forests in France, we went into battle with the feeling we were never alone. It was the trust and faith in knowing our buddy next to us was ready to lend a helping hand if ever we got into trouble, and our determination to help our buddy when he got into trouble. Going into battle, General Ryder of the 34th Division prepared our troops with these words: "You'll see your buddies hurt and killed, and maybe you'll get it next, but you keep on fighting. You'll fill the place of the man that's hit, and you'll keep on fighting." Our sense of duty and loyalty to the cause for freedom never dimmed our resolve to get the job done. This study uses a song from the fourth Taylor Swift's album called Red. This study employs qualitative methods in data collection. After collecting the data, it encompasses that simile and hyperbole are dominantly found. It also reveals that figurative language used in this song is to deliver her deepest feeling. The use of figurative language in this song is very dominant which can provide knowledge to the reader to know the type of figurative language.
