Minutes of General Meeting White Mountain Gem & Mineral Club July 5, 2011

President Nanz Marshall called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. There were 20 members present including new member George Solaris. Mike Gaspar was a guest who would make a presentation to the membership.

Nanz called for the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of July 4th and the veterans present.

A motion to approve the June, 2011 minutes as published was made by Karen Stokes and seconded by Bill Stalder. There being no corrections or additions, the motion passed unanimously.

Nanz then made announcements of upcoming events including the Prescott Show on July 29-31 and the Native American Art Festival locally. Nanz has coupons available for a discount at the Prescott Show.

Next Nanz called for Board reports: Larry Legge gave the Treasurer‟s Report. Tonie MonDragon, Secretary, reported on filing a Petition with the Bureau of Land Management to defer the assessment work needed in 2011 since the Wallow fire has closed the Apache National Forest and we cannot access the claims.

Charlene Bingell reported on a correction to page 4 of the newsletter as to the date of the Coalition Trip. Nanz reported on the success of the June fieldtrip that turned into a potluck picnic in the Show Low City Park. Karen Stokes suggested we have another picnic in August if there is no fieldtrip available.

Eunice reminded members that our club is sponsoring the July 23rd Coalition Fieldtrip to Stewart‟s Rockshop at Exit 303 on I40. There is a fee of $2 per person and 50 cents per pound of petrified wood on the acreage or $1 per pound if picked up near the shop.

Nanz reported that the afghan raffle brought in $78.00.

Nanz then introduced Mike Gaspar a former club member and a contractor for the Forest Service. Mike informed us that as a club we could participate in the reforestation of the Apache National Forest following the Wallow Fire by adopting an area and planting pine seedlings. Club members could either participate in the planting or donate money for seedlings. Mike said that an order of seedlings covered 16,000 plants distributed 190 per acre and cost five cents each ($800.00). Mike stated there was some urgency to do this during monsoon season and there was a prescribed method to accomplish reforestation. Eunice made a motion to have Mike look into this further and report back next month. The motion was seconded by Bill Stalder and approved. Tonie made a motion to have a club member be an alternative to seek information. The motion was seconded by George Stokes and approved. Nanz asked for a volunteer and Tonie volunteered to get information and report back next month.

Nanz called for a 10 minute break at 7:13 p.m. The meeting resumed at 7:27 p.m. at which time Nanz made the announcement that the JB Restaurant manager said that he wanted our club to order more meals in exchange for use of the room. The number he mentioned was 40 meals and we had only had 8 dinner orders tonight. Alternatively he requested a $50 fee for the use of the room. Larry offered to look into other meeting sites in the area and would report back next month.

Nanz reminded members that we need to have a ballot established by October and that neither she, nor Larry, nor Charlene would run for office. That leaves openings for President, Vice President, Treasurer and Editor. If our club is going to continue to function we need people to step up to these jobs.

Larry started the educational portion of the meeting, being a video about the Pala Mine and the tourmalines found there.

There being no further business, the door prize and raffle prizes were drawn. The door prize of a good on Grand Canyon Geology was won by David Adams. The 50/50 of $14.50 was won by Larry Embry, the second place septarian was won by Larry Legge and Tonie won the third place apophylite specimen.

Upon motion by Brookie Embry and second by Gary Amator the meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m. with the silent auction running another three minutes after the meeting.

Respectfully submitted, Tonie MonDragon, Secretary

Field Trip Report

June Field Trip

A day at the Park could not really have been better than OUR DAY. 17 members and one guest and one drop by to chat with Karen, and one man who thought we were having a family get together, and wanted to change his name to join us. We really do have fun!! Thanks to Eunice who brought RIBS that everyone loved. Thanks to all the excellent cooks who filled us all up with the scrumptious sides and desserts. The rocks there were both fascinating to hear the stories about them, and the ones for trade made several of us wish we had brought better bargaining power. SUPER DAY! Let‟s do it again soon!

May Field Trip

Saturday May 21st we had six members and three guests show up for our field trip to Diamond Point. The weather was great, warm and sunny. There were plenty of trees for shade. Several crystals were found, some with double terminations. I found some of the best ones on the high berm right on the road way. With the warmer weather the snakes are coming out. Three of us saw a small diamond back rattler about 14 inches long. Larry saw a large black timber rattler. We need to keep the snakes in mind for the rest of the summer field trips.

After Diamond Point seven of us went the geode site and picked up several geodes. The geodes were all over the place right on the surface of the ground. We call the geodes Miner brains. The area was beautiful. A good time was had by all. Rock on.

Field Trip News:

June Field Trip

On Saturday June 25th come to Show Low City Park around 10 am. It‟s going to be a fun get together! We‟ll pot luck and have bar-b-q. The Club will set up tables and shade. Larry said he‟ll have the generator available for crock pots and also a propane grill or two. Be sure to bring your own chair, beverage, and eating service along with your food contribution. If you want, there will be rocks to talk about and/or swap. No sales please- that is a whole other permit and headache. Come one and all, bring a friend. It should be a lovely day in the park. Nanz

Magdalena Minders

So our Magdalena, New Mexico Field Trip is one month closer!

We are going to be traveling up there on Friday, the 23 of Sept, and come back on Sunday, the 25th of Sept.

The field trip will be on Saturday, the 24th. As of 2 weeks ago, there were two rooms left at the Western Motel.

Ya'll better hurry to get a room there, if you want to be close to all of the other rockhounds. Each room has a TV, Frig., Microwave, Coffee Pot and a telephone. The motel Phone # is (575) 854-2417.

Other lodgings in the area is the High Country Lodge (575)854-2062, a block west of the Western, and the Eagles Nest (575)854-3135 at the west end of the village.

If you arrive early enough on Friday, you might want to check out the Kelly Mine which is probably three to four miles from motel.....or check out the rock shops. Tony's and Bill's each have a history all their own.

On the way to, or on the way home, a MUST SEE is the Very Large Array, where someone is communicating with outer space. This area has been featured in a number of GOOD Sci Fi movies, including Transformers 3. (This is the MAIN reason I am bringing George this year!)

In years past, we have taken "yard" rocks to place in the Jent's rock garden. Our club has a designated area for this. If you have a 2nd favorite rock you can let go, any additions will be given a good home. Could you bring one this time?

** Remember, New Mexico is an hour later than we are. Karen Stokes
