Written by Lane Nieset Published on July 30, 2018 Stepping into Taryn Toomey’s TriBeCa fitness studio, The Class, comes with recognition of a common theme—crystals. Jagged “healing” clear quartz clings to light fixtures and crushed rose quartz, black onyx and amethyst lay hidden under the pale oak floor planks, where the former Christian Dior fashion executive-turned- fitness guru leads yoga-inspired sessions attended by supermodels like Christy Turlington Burns. The flickering candles and strategically placed crystals offer as much of a cathartic effect as the lithely blonde who simultaneously dances and DJs to Coachella-style beats, commanding students to “Get fucking angry” and let out pent-up emotions through animalistic roars. Equal parts therapy session and serious body sculpting, quartz- covered lighting (à la Kelly Wearstler) sets the scene here just as much as the beauty products lining the marble bathroom shelves. With the meditation and mindfulness industry pulling in more than $1.1 billion in the United States alone, it was only a matter of time before New Age healing classics like crystals made it to the mainstream market, with everyone from Victoria Beckham (who keeps crystals backstage before fashion shows) to designer Tory Burch (whose stores are decorated with crystal light fixtures) jumping on the balance bandwagon. In regions like Chamonix, where some of the world’s most beautiful smoky quartz is mined in the Mont Blanc massif mountain range, these crystals have served as design inspiration for thousands of years. -

GOODWIN P.O.Bo• 314, Lightning Ridge, NSW 2834, Australia Abstract Sugilite relatively rich in manganese has been found at two new localities, the Hoskins and Woods mines in New South Wales, Australia. The occurrences are in manganese-rich silicate rocks of middle to upper greenschist facies (Hoskins mine) and hornblende hornfels facies (Woods mine). Coexisting minerals are members of the namansilite-aegirine and pectolite-serandite series, Mn-rich alkali amphiboles, alkali feldspar, braunite, rhodonite, tephroite, albite, microcline, norrishite, witherite, manganoan calcite, quartz, and several unidentified minerals. Woods mine sugilite is colour-zoned with pale mauve cores and colourless rims, whereas Hoskins mine sugilite is only weakly colour-zoned and pink to mauve. Within single samples, the chemical compositions of sugilite from both localities show wide ranges in A1 contents and less variable ranges of Fe and Mn, similar to trends in sugilite from other localities. The refractive indices and cell dimensions tend to show systematic increases progressing from Al-rich to Fe- Mn-rich. The formation of the sugilite is controlled by the high alkali (especially Li) and manganese contents of the country rock, reflected in the occurrences of coexisting high alkali- and manganese- bearing minerals, and by high fo2 conditions. Intense weathering of copper orebodies in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia has produced an unusual suite of secondary copper minerals comprising chrysocolla, azurite, malachite and the phosphates libethenite and pseudomalachite. The phosphates persist in outcrop and show a marked zoning with libethenite confined to near-surface areas. Abundant chrysocolla is also found in these environments, but never replaces the two secondary phosphates or azurite. This leads to unusual assemblages of secondary copper minerals, that can, however, be explained by equilibrium models. Data from the literature are used to develop a comprehensive geochemical model that describes for the first time the origin and geochemical setting of this style of economically important mineralization.
