Calicut Research Centre of CMFRI - Recent Activities and Accomplishments This Centre implemented 11 inhouse projects 6 sponsored projects and one consultancy project investigated by 5 Scientists during the reporting period. A. Major achievements of this Centre - Research • Culture of Etroplus suratensis in Beach pond: 5000 seeds of Pearl spot were introduced on 22.10.2011 for culture at Beach Pond of Beach Hatchery Complex. • Diurnal oxygen curve constructed as well as the simultaneous insitu incubation of water samples carried out during three different occasions in the Padanna estuary () indicated heterotrophic conditions during the active mussel farming (more than 262 units) seasons. • Considerable decrease in the wet harvestable biomass (canopy) of seagrass beds in three atolls of Laccadive Archipelago occurred due to grazing pressure by turtles when compared to the values available 20 years ago. • Throughout the year the levels of Hg and As in all the major fish groups studied from Calicut coast were within the permissible levels. • Marine landings of small pelagics along Calicut (Puthiyappa and landing harbours) showed increase in the landings of oilsardine to the tune of 1613.5 tonnes and decrease in the landings of mackerel to the tune of 475.5 tonnes over the previous year. • Green Tide due to toxic bloom of Chattonella marina (Subrahmanyan) Hara et Chihara along the entire Calicut coast was observed during 27-9-2011 to 17-10- 2011 at varying intensities and associated with mass mortality of fingerlings of Otolithus sp, Cyanoglossus sp. and Liza sp and mole crab Emerita asiatica from the very next day onwards. • Large extensive seagrass bed of Halophila beccarii (Ashers) was observed from community reserve area close to the bird sanctuary measuring an area of two hactares. • Growth rate of Rhizophora saplings planted in estuary registered height of 2.5 cm/ month and canopy width of 2.8 cm/month. • Growth rate of saplings of Sonneretia apetalae at Kadalundi estuary registered average height of 5.64 cm/month. • Achieved success in breeding and rearing of the Bamboo shark Chyllocilium griseum in the Marine Research Aquarium. • Pteria avicular (Holten, 1802), popularly known as pearlwing shell comprising adults ( (TL-48.94 mm, HL- 73.63 mm and thickness- 18.51mm) and spats attached to flower type gorgonids ( Leptogorgia sp) were observed from the mussel bed at a depth of 3.5to 4.0 m off the south beach, Calicut on 1- 5- 2011.

• The total marine fish landings along the coast during 2011 registered 743123 t which was 22.2 % more than that (6038330 t) of 2010. The overall increase recorded was mainly due to the increased production recorded by Oil sardine (+ 62760t), Thread fin breams (+33185 t ) & Ribbon fish (+17514t ) . • The major gears that supported the fishery were Seines nets (57.0 %), Trawl nets (30.3 %), Gillnets (7.6 %) and Hooks & lines (3.3 %). • The cat fish fishery which was once considered almost collapsed seems to be on the revival path with 321.4 % increase over 2010. • In , Total catch by pole and line, troll line, drift gillnet, encircling gill net, hand line and long line registered 6428.5 t showing decline by 33.7 % over the previous year. • Tunas formed 69.0 % (4437.5 t) declined by 56.3 % over 2010. • Other fishes and elasmobranches 31.0 % (1991.0 t) increased by 10.0 % over 2010. • T.albacares and G. unicolor catches in 2011 increases by 976.6 % and 27.0 % respectively. • K. pelamis , E.affinis and A.thazard catches in 2011 declined by 80.9 %, 6.4 % and 33.7 % respectively. B. Special infrastructure developed BOD incubator- Rs.57680/; Thermofilters(2Nos)- Rs.57500/; Deionizer (Millipore, ultrapure) Rs.1, 79,877/ and Electric motors (3 nos)-Rs.23847. C. Revenue generation • This Centre generated income of Rs . 5,67,867 - through marine research aquarium (Rs.4,88,790), algal feed sale (Rs.1800), auctioning of fish samples(Rs.1655), auctioning of condemned stores(Rs.73,560) and sale of old newspapers etc(Rs.1062). D. Awards • TVR Pillai Aquaculture award: Molluscan Fisheries Division Team of this Centre comprising two Scientists (Dr P.K Asokan and Dr Laxmilatha) and two Technical Officers (Shri MP Sivadasan and VG. Surendranathan) were selected for this year’s TVR Pillai Aquaculture award for their contribution to the field of Mussel farming along Kerala coast. • Dr P.K.Asokan, Senior Scientist shared Best Poster Award with two other Scientists from Marine Biotechnology Division for the poster presented to the 8th International symposium on Diseases in Asian Aquaculture, held at College of Fisheries from 21-24 th Nov 2011. • Recognition: Shi.
