Although the first two routes are better known to students of World History, the Southwestern Silk Road has a long ancestry and also played an important role in knitting the world together.

I am happy to be here in this historic town of Kodungaloor today to inaugurate the Muziris Heritage Project, being implemented by the Tourism Department of the Government of Kerala, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. 2. If Kerala is God’s own country, Kodungaloor is the town where the Gods gather in unity and harmony. This town and its surroundings have been a thriving centre of Islam, Christianity, Judaism as well as Hinduism. It is heartening to know that the ancient Kurumba Bhagavati temple and the Cheraman Mosque, believed to be the oldest mosque in India, are both in Kodungalloor. The two synagogues in Paravur and Chennamangalam, the historical precinct of Kottayil Kovilakam and the Kottapppuram fort with its links to the Portugese, the Dutch and the Mysore Sultans are also in the neighbourhood. Kodungaloor is also believed to be the place where the Apostle of Jesus Christ, St. Thomas, landed bringing with him Christianity to India much before it reached Europe. 3. The Muziris Heritage Project, which was initiated six years ago, is an ambitious project comprising the development works of Chennamangalam palaces, Cheraman Parambu, Synagogue and waterfront at North Paravur; a visitor's centre; a performance centre at Gothuruthu; a Museum at Pallipuram, and a Tourism reception facility at Pattanam. The project also envisages the conservation of archaeological monuments within 125 square kilometres spread across Thrissur and Ernakulam districts.

The state was formed on November 1956 by combining various Malayalam speaking regions. From the early days Kerala is famous for trade, particularly for spices which attracted traders from different parts of the world. As per Sumerian records Kerala is referred as the ‘Garden of spices’ or ‘The spice garden of India’. The state has attracted Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians, Arabs, Greeks and Romans. Merchants from West Asia and Southern Europe established coastal ports and settlements in Kerala. Jewish connection with Kerala was started in the tenth Century B C. The Jews are an ethnic group who settled first in Muziris, the earliest seaport in Kerala which was known as ‘Little Jerusalem’. They came to Kerala during the period of King Solomon. It is believed that King Solomon had visited Kerala for trade purposes. From the very early days the country Kerala was known to the ancient Jews. In the 6th century BC the Jews came to Kodungaloor in order to escape from the Babylonian captivity of Nebuchednezzar. In 580 B C the Babylonian Empire conquered Yehudah (Judah), the Southern region of ancient Israel. After 50 years later, the Persian Empire (ancient Iran) conquered the Babylonian Empire and allowed the Jews to return home to the land of Israel.

Spain wanted to get access to Sudanese gold via the bases it established in the North African coast, and by gaining sovereignty over the Mediterranean to control the East-West trade and wheat supply which is vital for her. The westward progress of Ottoman State in the Mediterranean and conquest of Egypt brought the encounter of the two parties. Thus, a century long rivalry began. The rivalry not only continued at military area but also at political and economic arena. Both parties banned trade with the rivals. However, the trade between the two worlds preserved its continuity thanks to the intermediary states. Through Venice, French, British, Dutch, Geneva, under Toscana flag, via the European harbors like Marseilles, Livorno and Genoa the trade between the parties persisted. While these European ports were delivering the products demanded by Spain and supplied by Ottomans to the peninsula, they were also accomplishing the heading of American silver to these regions. INTRODUCTION The economic relations between Ottoman and Spanish states followed a specific course within the regional and international conditions of the time, though being not very intense. The claim of world sovereignty on both states put these states at each end of the Mediterranean into rivalry with each other. As Ottomans consider themselves as the sovereign and protector of the Islamic world, they acted in their political, military and economic enterprises by taking this into consideration.
