“The Greatest Gift Is the Realization That Life Does Not Consist Either In
“The greatest gift is the realization that life does not consist either in wallowing in the past or peering anxiously into the future; and it is appalling to contemplate the great number of often painful steps by which ones arrives at a truth so old, so obvious, and so frequently expressed. It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now –this day-this hour.” Charles Macomb Flandrau Ernest Hemingway drank here. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living. -

The first flight was the ferry from Dryden to Wallops on September 6–7, during which time the GH flew along the outflow region of Hurricane Leslie. The next five flights were in Hurricane Nadine, the only storm to occur during the major portion of the deployment, but one that occurred virtually throughout the period. The last two flights, also in the Azores region on September 22–23 and 26–27, investigated Nadine’s interaction with an extratropical trough. Nadine re-intensified into a hurricane on September 28, 2012. The last flight consisted of two north-south tracks under the Aqua and NPP satellites. UPPER MIDDLE-RIGHT Ozone Hole Reduction The average area covered by the Antarctic ozone hole in 2012 was the second smallest in the last 20 years, according to data from NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites. Scientists attributed the change to warmer temperatures in the Antarctic’s lower stratosphere. In this comparison, the September 10, 2000 ozone hole (top) was the largest on record at 11.5 million square miles (29.9 million square kilometers). The average size of the 2012 ozone hole (bottom) was 6.9 million square miles (17.9 million square kilometers). LOWER LEFT Looking Into a Hurricane NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, or TRMM satellite, can measure rainfall rates and cloud heights in tropical cyclones, and was used to look into Hurricane Sandy on October 28, 2012. -
A GUIDE to HEAD LICE PREVENTION and TREATMENT May 2018
A GUIDE TO HEAD LICE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT May 2018 What are Head Lice? Head lice are very small, tan-colored insects about the size of a sesame seed which live only on human heads. They live and lay eggs (nits) close to the scalp. The nits are about the size of the eye of a needle, oval shaped, and grey, white, brown, or tan in color. Head lice depend on human blood for their survival. How are Head Lice Spread? Lice are passed by direct contact with an infested person, or shared personal or household items. Lice do not spread to or from pets. Lice do not jump or fly. They crawl and can fall off the head. Lice do not live longer than 48 hours off the head. They only lay nits on hair shafts attached to the head. Nits that hatch after they have fallen off the head will die quickly without a blood meal. Prevention of Head Lice Children should not share hair care items, towels, clothing, hats, sports headgear or head phones. Avoid sharing lockers. If jackets and hats must be hung next to each other, control the spread of lice by hanging the clothing inside a plastic bag. Check children’s heads often so that new cases can be treated promptly. What are the Symptoms of Head Lice? Head lice cause itching of the scalp and neck. The nits are glued to the hairs within ½ in from the scalp, often found at the back of the head and behind the ears. Tiny red blood spots (louse bite marks) on the scalp are a sign of lice. -

Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Grant. Pg. 1 Think and Read Busy Izzy We are Kelsey and Addy, and we have a dog named Izzy. Sometimes Izzy gets us into a tiny bit of trouble, but one time she got us into BIG trouble! We were walking to baseball practice and Izzy decided to follow us there. Since Izzy is a kind dog and all the kids know her, the coach said she could stay. The team was so busy throwing, catching, and batting the ball that we didn’t notice how time had flown by. It was already time to go home! When we started gathering up the gear, we noticed that all the batting helmets were missing and so was my brand-new baseball cap! We looked around but didn’t spot a thing. We also didn’t spot Izzy. Kelsey and I had a bad feeling. We ran home as fast as we could. Yep, there was Izzy! Safe and sound in her doghouse. But our caps and helmets were still missing. Maverick, our neighbor, yelled from the front yard. “Hey Addy, have you seen my bicycle helmet? It’s missing!” We went around front and told him no. -
