  • Prince Talks: the Silence Is Broken the Purple Pleasure Palace Houses the Genius Behind 'Around the World in a Day'
Prince Talks: The Silence Is Broken The Purple Pleasure Palace houses the genius behind 'Around the World in a Day' Prince on the cover of Rolling Stone. "Raspberry Beret" video still By Neal Karlen September 12, 1985 John Nelson turns sixty-nine today, and all the semiretired piano man wants for his birthday is to shoot some pool with his firstborn son. "He's real handy with a cue," says Prince, laughing, as he threads his old white T-Bird through his old black neighborhood toward his old man's house. "He's so cool. The man knows what time it is." Hard time is how life has traditionally been clocked in North Minneapolis; this is the place 'Time' forgot twelve years ago when the magazine's cover trumpeted "The Good Life in Minnesota," alongside a picture of Governor Wendell Anderson holding up a walleye. Though tame and middle-class by Watts and Roxbury standards, the North Side offers some of the few mean streets in town. The old sights bring out more Babbitt than Badass in Prince as he leads a leisurely tour down the main streets of his inner-city Gopher Prairie. He cruises slowly, respectfully: stopping completely at red lights, flicking on his turn signal even when no one's at an intersection. Gone is the wary Kung Fu Grasshopper voice with which Prince whispers when meeting strangers or accepting Academy Awards. Cruising peacefully with the window down, he's proof in a paisley jump suit that you can always go home again, especially if you never really left town.

  • “The Greatest Gift Is the Realization That Life Does Not Consist Either In
“The greatest gift is the realization that life does not consist either in wallowing in the past or peering anxiously into the future; and it is appalling to contemplate the great number of often painful steps by which ones arrives at a truth so old, so obvious, and so frequently expressed. It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now –this day-this hour.” Charles Macomb Flandrau Ernest Hemingway drank here. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living.

NASA/TM–2013-217510 Atmospheric Research 2012 Technical Highlights <100 180 260 340 420 500> OZONE (DOBSON UNITS) July 2013 Cover Photo Captions UPPER LEFT HS3 Flight Tracks HS3 conducted seven flights of the environmental Global Hawk (GH) aircraft. The first flight was the ferry from Dryden to Wallops on September 6–7, during which time the GH flew along the outflow region of Hurricane Leslie. The next five flights were in Hurricane Nadine, the only storm to occur during the major portion of the deployment, but one that occurred virtually throughout the period. The last two flights, also in the Azores region on September 22–23 and 26–27, investigated Nadine’s interaction with an extratropical trough. Nadine re-intensified into a hurricane on September 28, 2012. The last flight consisted of two north-south tracks under the Aqua and NPP satellites. UPPER MIDDLE-RIGHT Ozone Hole Reduction The average area covered by the Antarctic ozone hole in 2012 was the second smallest in the last 20 years, according to data from NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites. Scientists attributed the change to warmer temperatures in the Antarctic’s lower stratosphere. In this comparison, the September 10, 2000 ozone hole (top) was the largest on record at 11.5 million square miles (29.9 million square kilometers). The average size of the 2012 ozone hole (bottom) was 6.9 million square miles (17.9 million square kilometers). LOWER LEFT Looking Into a Hurricane NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, or TRMM satellite, can measure rainfall rates and cloud heights in tropical cyclones, and was used to look into Hurricane Sandy on October 28, 2012.

American Music Review The H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLIV, Number 2 Spring 2015 Black and White, then “Red” All Over: Chicago’s American Negro Music Festival Mark Burford, Reed College The functions of public musical spectacle in 1940s Chicago were bound up with a polyphony of stark and sometimes contradic- tory changes. Chicago’s predominantly African American South Side had become more settled as participants in the first waves of the Great Migration established firm roots, even as the city’s “Black Belt” was newly transformed by fresh arrivals that bal- looned Chicago’s black population by 77% between 1940 and 1950. Meanwhile, over the course of the decade, African Ameri- cans remained attentive to a dramatic narrowing of the political spectrum, from accommodation of a populist, patriotic progres- sivism to one dominated by virulent Cold War anticommunism. Sponsored by the Chicago Defender, arguably the country’s flagship black newspaper, and for a brief time the premiere black-organized event in the country, the American Negro Music Festival (ANMF) was through its ten years of existence respon- sive to many of the communal, civic, and national developments during this transitional decade. In seeking to showcase both racial achievement and interracial harmony, festival organizers registered ambivalently embraced shifts in black cultural identity W.C. Handy at the during and in the years following World War II, as well as the American Negro Music Festival Courtesy of St. Louis Post-Dispatch possibilities and limits of coalition politics.
