Diggin' You Like Those Ol' Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America
Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records 181 Diggin’ You Like Those Ol’ Soul Records: Meshell Ndegeocello and the Expanding Definition of Funk in Postsoul America Tammy L. Kernodle Today’s absolutist varieties of Black Nationalism have run into trouble when faced with the need to make sense of the increasingly distinct forms of black culture produced from various diaspora populations. The unashamedly hybrid character of these black cultures continually confounds any simplistic (essentialist or antiessentialist) understanding of the relationship between racial identity and racial nonidentity, between folk cultural authenticity and pop cultural betrayal. Paul Gilroy1 Funk, from its beginnings as terminology used to describe a specific genre of black music, has been equated with the following things: blackness, mascu- linity, personal and collective freedom, and the groove. Even as the genre and terminology gave way to new forms of expression, the performance aesthetic developed by myriad bands throughout the 1960s and 1970s remained an im- portant part of post-1970s black popular culture. In the early 1990s, rhythm and blues (R&B) splintered into a new substyle that reached back to the live instru- mentation and infectious grooves of funk but also reflected a new racial and social consciousness that was rooted in the experiences of the postsoul genera- tion. One of the pivotal albums advancing this style was Meshell Ndegeocello’s Plantation Lullabies (1993). Ndegeocello’s sound was an amalgamation of 0026-3079/2013/5204-181$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:4 (2013): 181-204 181 182 Tammy L. Kernodle several things. I was tired of being a dependable, work-your-way-through-school, practice-the-piano teenager. I decided I wanted to be a street fighter. It was a new thought and a foolish thought, given I had zero experience in the street. But, I started paying attention when some of the other big guys would pick a fight and brawl on the ball field at Greater Miami Academy. I practiced shadow fighting in front of the mirror at home. The 130-pound guy in the mirror wasn’t in the least formidable; nevertheless, I had made my decision. I would no longer be virtuoso pianist and class pastor. I would become a street fighter. I saw a workout set of springs advertised that claimed, if I would stretch those springs faithfully every day, I would become muscular and strong. It was false advertising, but I felled for it. I ordered the set and began my training to become a street fighter. Finally I was ready for my debut, and on the way home from school, at the bus stop on Flagler Street, waiting for the 57th Avenue bus, I picked a fight with the weakest guy in my class. John was a little taller, but I figured he weighed Gordon Retzer in about the same. -
Prince Talks: the Silence Is Broken the Purple Pleasure Palace Houses the Genius Behind 'Around the World in a Day'
Prince Talks: The Silence Is Broken The Purple Pleasure Palace houses the genius behind 'Around the World in a Day' Prince on the cover of Rolling Stone. "Raspberry Beret" video still By Neal Karlen September 12, 1985 John Nelson turns sixty-nine today, and all the semiretired piano man wants for his birthday is to shoot some pool with his firstborn son. "He's real handy with a cue," says Prince, laughing, as he threads his old white T-Bird through his old black neighborhood toward his old man's house. "He's so cool. The man knows what time it is." Hard time is how life has traditionally been clocked in North Minneapolis; this is the place 'Time' forgot twelve years ago when the magazine's cover trumpeted "The Good Life in Minnesota," alongside a picture of Governor Wendell Anderson holding up a walleye. Though tame and middle-class by Watts and Roxbury standards, the North Side offers some of the few mean streets in town. The old sights bring out more Babbitt than Badass in Prince as he leads a leisurely tour down the main streets of his inner-city Gopher Prairie. He cruises slowly, respectfully: stopping completely at red lights, flicking on his turn signal even when no one's at an intersection. Gone is the wary Kung Fu Grasshopper voice with which Prince whispers when meeting strangers or accepting Academy Awards. Cruising peacefully with the window down, he's proof in a paisley jump suit that you can always go home again, especially if you never really left town. -
