  • “The Greatest Gift Is the Realization That Life Does Not Consist Either In
“The greatest gift is the realization that life does not consist either in wallowing in the past or peering anxiously into the future; and it is appalling to contemplate the great number of often painful steps by which ones arrives at a truth so old, so obvious, and so frequently expressed. It is good for one to appreciate that life is now. Whatever it offers, little or much, life is now –this day-this hour.” Charles Macomb Flandrau Ernest Hemingway drank here. Cuban revolutionaries Fidel Castro and Che Guevera drank here. A longhaired young hippie musician named Jimmy Buffett drank and performed here, too. From the 1930’s through today this rustic dive bar has seen more than its share of the famous and the infamous. It’s a little joint called Capt. Tony’s in Key West, Florida. Eighty-seven-year-old Anthony ‘Capt. Tony’ Tarracino has been the owner and proprietor of this boozy establishment since 1959. It seems Tony, as a young mobster, got himself into some serious trouble with ‘the family’ back in New Jersey and needed to lay low for a while. In those days, the mosquito invested ‘keys’ (or islands) on the southernmost end of Florida’s coastline was a fine place for wise guys on the lam to hide out. And this was well before the tee-shirt shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, charming B&B’s and quaint hotels turned Key West into a serious year-round tourist destination. Sure, there were some ‘artsy’ types like Hemingway and Tennessee Williams living in Key West during the late 50’s when Tony bought the bar, but it was a seaside shanty town where muscular hard-working men in shrimp boats and cutters fished all day for a living.

The first flight was the ferry from Dryden to Wallops on September 6–7, during which time the GH flew along the outflow region of Hurricane Leslie. The next five flights were in Hurricane Nadine, the only storm to occur during the major portion of the deployment, but one that occurred virtually throughout the period. The last two flights, also in the Azores region on September 22–23 and 26–27, investigated Nadine’s interaction with an extratropical trough. Nadine re-intensified into a hurricane on September 28, 2012. The last flight consisted of two north-south tracks under the Aqua and NPP satellites. UPPER MIDDLE-RIGHT Ozone Hole Reduction The average area covered by the Antarctic ozone hole in 2012 was the second smallest in the last 20 years, according to data from NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellites. Scientists attributed the change to warmer temperatures in the Antarctic’s lower stratosphere. In this comparison, the September 10, 2000 ozone hole (top) was the largest on record at 11.5 million square miles (29.9 million square kilometers). The average size of the 2012 ozone hole (bottom) was 6.9 million square miles (17.9 million square kilometers). LOWER LEFT Looking Into a Hurricane NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, or TRMM satellite, can measure rainfall rates and cloud heights in tropical cyclones, and was used to look into Hurricane Sandy on October 28, 2012.

  • Prince Talks and with the Release of 'Graffiti Bridge,' the Soundtrack to His Forthcoming Movie Musical, the Critics Are Listening
Prince Talks And with the release of 'Graffiti Bridge,' the soundtrack to his forthcoming movie musical, the critics are listening. But don't even try to take notes. Prince performing at Wembley, London, August 22nd, 1990. Graham Wiltshire/Hulton Archive/Getty By Neal Karlen October 18, 1990 The phone rings at 4:48 in the morning. "Hi, it's Prince," says the wide-awake voice calling from a room several yards down the hallway of this London hotel. "Did I wake you up?" Though it's assumed that Prince does in fact sleep, no one on his summer European Nude Tour can pinpoint precisely when. Prince seems to relish the aura of night stalker; his vampire hours have been a part of his mad-genius myth ever since he was waging junior-high-school band battles on Minneapolis's mostly black North Side. "Anyone who was around back then knew what was happening," Prince had said two days earlier, reminiscing. "I was working. When they were sleeping, I was jamming. When they woke up, I had another groove. I'm as insane that way now as I was back then." For proof, he'd produced a crinkled dime-store notebook that he carries with him like Linus's blanket. Empty when his tour started in May, the book is nearly full, with twenty-one new songs scripted in perfect grammar-school penmanship. He has also been laboring on the road over his movie musical Graffiti Bridge, which was supposed to be out this past summer and is now set for release in November.

Morris Day and the Time will be performing Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Stanislaus County Fair on the Bud Light Variety Free Stage. The concert will be hosted by KWIN and will begin at 8:30 p.m. The concert is free with the price of Fair admission. “This funk group will get our Fair guests dancing in no time,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “It will be a great way to celebrate the legacy of longtime collaborator Prince.” Morris Day played an essential role in the development of the iconic pop-funk sound of the 1980’s. His exuberant stage presence and colorful showmanship mirror that of longtime friend Prince. Day’s involvement with Prince traces back to 1980 when his composition “Party up,” originally recorded when he was a member of the Enterprise, was covered on Prince’s album “Dirty Mind.” As a founding member of Prince’s band the Time, Day remains a true funk trailblazer. He worked with the group until 1984 when he launched his solo career, before returning in the 1990’s. The Timegained popularity with feel-good tracks such as “Jerk Out” and “Jungle Love.” In fact, “Jungle Love” was featured in Prince’s 1984 film Purple Rain.
