CFP: Prince and the Minneapolis Sound H-Midwest CFP: Prince and the Minneapolis Sound Discussion published by Molly Reinhoudt on Monday, May 22, 2017 Type: Call for Publications Date: August 7, 2017 Subject Fields: African American History / Studies, Black History / Studies, Music and Music History, Popular Culture Studies In spring 2016, Dr. Shannon Cochran and I put out a call for manuscripts for a special issue of the Journal of African American Studies examining the life and legacy of Prince Rogers Nelson. The response was overwhelming and we are happy to report that the special issue will be published fall 2017. While it is too late to submit entries to the special issue we’d like to encourage you to submit your work to an edited book on which we have embarked. Although this edited book will consist mainly of scholarly articles, we welcome opinion pieces, interviews of appropriate figures, reflections, poems, and the like. In addition to papers specifically about Prince, writers are also encouraged to consider, but of course not limit themselves to, other figures and topics such as Andre Cymone, Sheila E., Dez Dickerson, Morris Day, Morris Day and The Time, Flyte Time, The Family, Vanity, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, The Original 7ven, Prince and the Revolution, The Revolution, Prince’s impact on Mint Condition, Jill Jones, Joni Mitchell and her impact on Prince, The Minneapolis Sound, Carmen Electra, Tamar, The John Nelson Trio, Stokely of Mint Condition, and Prince and the New Power Generation. This list is by no means exhaustive. Writers are encouraged to be as creative with their ideas as Prince was with his songwriting, music, and performances. If there is a topic about which you liked to write but are unsure as to whether or not it is appropriate for this project please reach out to the guest editors for clarification. To be considered for this edited book, prospective authors must submit an abstract of no more than 300 words by August 7, 2017 via email to both coeditors Judson L. Jeffries, PhD, Professor of African American and African Studies [email protected]( ) at The Ohio State University and Shannon Cochran, PhD, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and English at Clayton State University in Georgia ([email protected]). Authors will be notified of acceptance by August 21. Complete papers are due by February 21, 2018 and shortly thereafter will be sent out for peer review. Only those who have submitted abstracts and have had them accepted will be invited to submit full papers. Contact Info: Judson L. Buried beneath 50 solid inches of annual snow, Minneapolis made a Sound quite different than what the pop world foresaw. It issued forth as a slick, black, technologically advanced fusion, poised to storm the charts. Never known for sizable African-American populations, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in fact harbored a tight-knit community of musicians working feverishly through the late ’70s and early ’80s toward a radical manipulation of American dance music, coating futuristic funk with the glamorous sheen of guitar rock. Synthetic ebony and ivory met Track Listing electricity, with sexed-up results sent shockingly across the pop heavens like violet lightning. 1. 94 East If You See Me 2. After a number of disputes with Prince, Denise Matthews, also known as Vanity, the lead singer of Prince-created Vanity 6, fled the Prince entourage in 1983 to pursue solo endeavors recording with Motown Records and acting in films. She left open an acting position for the role written for her by Prince in the film Purple Rain. After a frantic casting call, the film's director met actress and model Patricia Kotero. Renamed by Prince as "Apollonia", Kotero stepped into Vanity's role in the film Purple Rain, as well as in the fragmented group, Vanity 6. The other two members of Vanity 6, Brenda Bennett and Susan Moonsie, joined Apollonia and reformed the group as Apollonia 6 for the film and one album. During this time it was rumored that Apollonia and Prince were romantically involved with one another, but it was later revealed that Apollonia was actually married. Her "relationship" with Prince had been more of a PR stunt for the film than anything serious. Apollonia 6 only had one hit with "Sex Shooter" in 1984.

About a year and a half lat- er, we started working on what would eventually become our biggest release, Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost R&B Grooves From Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979. What follows is our attempt to share with you some of the amazing stories, history, and photos that have been so gracious- ly shared with us during the course of producing a compilation of soulful tunes from our hometown. ..... R&B, soul, and funk music in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota went through dra- matic changes during the 1960s and 1970s. Predating these changes, a vibrant jazz scene beginning in the 1920s laid the groundwork with several players being instrumental in helping teach young local R&B mu- sicians how to play. However, many of the early R&B pioneers, including Mojo Buford, Maurice McKin- nies, and Willie Walker, came to Minnesota from other states and brought the music with them.
