After a number of disputes with Prince, Denise Matthews, also known as Vanity, the lead singer of Prince-created Vanity 6, fled the Prince entourage in 1983 to pursue solo endeavors recording with Motown Records and acting in films. She left open an acting position for the role written for her by Prince in the film Purple Rain. After a frantic casting call, the film's director met actress and model Patricia Kotero. Renamed by Prince as "Apollonia", Kotero stepped into Vanity's role in the film Purple Rain, as well as in the fragmented group, Vanity 6. The other two members of Vanity 6, and Susan Moonsie, joined Apollonia and reformed the group as Apollonia 6 for the film and one album. During this time it was rumored that Apollonia and Prince were romantically involved with one another, but it was later revealed that Apollonia was actually married. Her "relationship" with Prince had been more of a PR stunt for the film than anything serious. Apollonia 6 only had one hit with "" in 1984. Prince had originally intended his classic tracks "" (later recorded by ), "17 Days" (later used as the B-side to ""), and "" (recorded by Sheila E. in 1984) for the Apollonia 6 album but he soon lost interest in the project when he became convinced that Apollonia was only there to fulfill her job's obligations and would not be continuing with his group after her contractual obligations to completing the film and one album were fulfilled. Apollonia 6 were slated to open the Purple Rain tour with Prince and Sheila E., but that idea was scrapped after the group returned from a promotional tour of Europe. After the group's demise, Kotero continued working on TV shows such as Falcon Crest and in B-movies for the next decade. She even released a solo album to lackluster success in 1988. The main criticism of the album was that Kotero tried too hard to give the impression of change; she adopted a more pop/California sound in place of her signature R&B/ sound that had been successfully established for her formerly by Prince. Apollonia 6. Despite being credited to the band Apollonia 6 , all the tracks are written by Prince, as well as performing every instrument. Its 22-year-old lead singer Patrica “Apollonia” Kotero was auditioned, along with hundreds of others, in New York following the departure of Denise Matthews from the band’s earlier incarnation Vanity 6. Kotero subsequently fulfilled Matthews’ role as lead female and Prince’s muse for the movie Purple Rain and afterwards embarked on an acting career under her stage name Apollonia Kotero. She and Prince remained close ever since. Tracks created for the Apollonia 6 album but never made the cut include the hits The Glamorous Life (which was instead recorded and released by Sheila E. for her debut album) and Manic Monday (given to and released in 1986 by The Bangles), plus Velvet Kitty Cat and 17 Days . Prince disbanded Apollonia 6 following the Purple Rain Tour. Kotero then followed a career in acting. His production credit on the album is under the name of The Starr ★ Company, as he is not credited by name. Prince even performed the vocals on the album, to give the group singing direction, which Apollonia re-recorded for the final cut of the tracks. Prince’s version of Sex Shooter was released in 2019 by Warner Brothers, in the collection Originals . The album was recorded throughout the spring and the summer of 1983 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, except for the opening track which was laid down at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse studio in the outskirts of Minneapolis. Apollonia 6 – review. I wrongly underrated Apollonia 6 for the best part of 30 years. Yes, it has its highs and low points, and it is impossible to tell how invested Prince was in this 1984 project what was essentially intended as the second album for the band’s earlier stocking clad incarnation Vanity 6. Whereas the lead single was Sex Shooter , due to its eyebrow raising segment in the movie Purple Rain, there are still highlights aplenty – four to be exact, out of the album’s seven tracks – a far higher number than I for one originally gave credit. Whilst the stockings have aged badly the (good) tracks have not. To think that Manic Monday and 17 Days were slated for this record, there is still plenty on offer. Its best track is Happy Birthday Mr. Christian – funny enough, Prince jumped from recording this track straight into Purple Rain itself, it enjoys remarkable provenance and tells of a student’s fantasy getting off with their teacher. Prince is also playing the instruments throughout, with occasionally the mighty Sheila E on drums. Prince’s two titillation projects were not taken seriously in music perhaps unsurprisingly, much unlike The Time, Prince’s greatest side-project. Others worthy of honourable mention are A Million Times (I Love You) complete with its addictive hook and instrumental section; the radio friendly Some Kind Of Lover which backed the album’s second of its two singles, and forth worthy track Blue Limousine . Apollonia 6 is rated 4 out of 5 by Goldies Parade . Apollonia 6 12' albums download. Apollonia 6: The Video Album. It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history. I just have to say this again. p.s. Just how much does Brenda look like Courtney Love? This is bizarre. In 1984,there were plans for Apollonia 6 to film a video for every track on their album.I don't how far they got with this project, but these Youtube clips prove that alot of footage was apparently filmed and never used/released. That would be a very good idea these days but back in 1984, I don't know why they would have done it since VCRs were so damn expensive back then that very few people could afford one. Unless they were going to do a television special or something. That would be a very good idea these days but back in 1984, I don't know why they would have done it since VCRs were so damn expensive back then that very few people could afford one. Unless they were going to do a television special or something. Actually, Olivia did it with her "Physical" album in 1981 (82?). Don't know if that was a big seller, but I doubt it hurt the album's popularity (then again, maybe they didn't sell the video. not sure). Diana Ross had a video collection out there after only a small handful of clips..I think that was 1984? Who knows what they were thinking but I find it funny that this never aired anywhere. Could it because of their lack of popularity at the time and the way that WB tries to forget that they ever exsisted? And why is this such a mystery to even big fans? Maybe that's the answer. if Janet did something like RN1814 and didn't release it, I'm sure fans would still be talking about it, trying to get their hands on it. Considering the stunned reaction by everyone here as well as on Youtube, I assume this is the first the public is seeing of it. I could be wrong. It was posted on August 30, 2007. not all that long ago. Warners and other record companies need to wise up and realize classic videos like this could probably reach a small but interested they sold on DVD (of course, don't charge a fortune. we can see them for free on Youtube!). Am I wrong? I would buy this if it was on an Apollonia 6 collection. could getting the rights be a problem (is that the reason why so many albums like "Apollonia 6" never get a fair shake on CD or even digital download. or just plain laziness!). [Edited 9/8/07 14:09pm] That would be a very good idea these days but back in 1984, I don't know why they would have done it since VCRs were so damn expensive back then that very few people could afford one. Unless they were going to do a television special or something. Olivia Newton-John's 'Physical' album had a video for every album track - and it was released on VHS and Laserdisc in 1981. It was sold to a TV Network to broadcast in 1982 but was actually produced primarily for sale and retail. Oops - I took so long pressing 'Reply' (because I was on the phone) that Vinny has also mentioned the 'Physical' album. But he's right - there was a precedence for this. [Edited 9/8/07 14:23pm] I wonder why it was never finished though? The clips on YouTube are obviously film-rushes pieced together without any titles or effects. I'm guessing the blank screen at the end of Part 3 is where the end credits would appear (?). And although the production values are endearingly cheap, time costs money - so somebody must be out of pocket, but who? It's nowhere near as amateur as that 'Hard Life' movie Prince directed in 1987. Did Warner Bros. bankroll this? LET'S O-VER-A-RTI-CU-LATE E-VE-RY-THING. Who's Buck Henry? Did I hear Brenda say at the end of part one "Susan's losses our first job. "? Who in the world wrote that script? Anywho. cool find. Thanks for posting. [Edited 9/8/07 16:12pm] Who's Buck Henry? I like it very nice. Part three is best Never knew it was made. THANKS FOR THAT. I wonder why it was never finished though? It's nowhere near as amateur as that 'Hard Life' movie Prince directed in 1987. Did Warner Bros. bankroll this? I guess it is unfinished (and without credits and probably nobody around to be able to figure out who did work on it, no chance for a physical release. as if WB could consider). You think maybe this was somebody that worked on it that released it? Yeah, I also found i weird that it didn't have credits where the credits should have been. Sorry to make this about Prince, but what is "Hard Life"? I'm watching it again. I'm a big fan and frankly, it's terrible as a whole! I mean, the songs as music videos, they are awesome (the "Sex Shooter" here is more like I imagined it and not that lame thing in the middle of a sunny day that was used for the actual video). The whole "Mr. Christan" thing was creepy as a song but but you kind of understood it and didn't think of it as so much a love letter. but here, it's a whole new level of strange! And then "the will" says "Tough titty, Apollonia". WTF is this? The acting is beyond awful even by eighties music video standards! They would have been nuts to release it. Sounds like it was something better left for Apollonia, along with cast and crew, to play at parties and laugh at enjoy among themselves. It frankly seems like an inside joke that is kind of removed from the whole Apollonia 6 that Prince envisioned. I really doubt he had any involvement in this (or the prior real music video). Still very interesting to watch as a "sign o the times" (and again, the "videos" are fun). [Edited 9/8/07 18:53pm] Did I hear Brenda say at the end of part one "Susan's losses our first job. "?
