The Importance of Tajwid • At the time of the Prophet , may Peace and Blessings be upon him, there was no need for people to study Tajwid because they talked with what is now known as the Tajwid as it was natural for them • When the Arabs started mixing with the non-Arabs and as Islam spread, mistakes in the Quranic recitation began to appear, so the scholars had to record the rules • Presently, because the everyday Arabic that Arabs speak has changed so much from the Classical Arabic with which the Quran was revealed, even the Arabs have to learn the Tajwid Basis of Learning Tajwid • Scholars of Quran of the opinion that reciting the Quran correctly while observing the rules of recitation is an obligation upon each and every Muslim. • This is inline with verse 4, Surah Al-Muzzammil: “…And recite the Quran in slow, measured rhythmic tones.” – Al-Muzzammil 73:4 Basis of Learning Tajwid • The noble Prophet pbuh told his followers about the rewards of reciting, studying and teaching the Quran as follows: َ ر ُ َ ََّ ر ُ َ َ ََّ »خ ُْيك رم َم رن ت َعل َم الق ررآن َوعل َم ُ ه« “The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it to others.” – Reported by al-Bukhari, Ibn Majah and Ad-Darimi.

Greenhill ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language, The Australian National University & Department of Linguistic and Cultural Evolution, Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History [email protected] Language documentation faces a persistent and pervasive problem: How much material is enough to represent a language fully? How much text would we need to sample the full phoneme inventory of a language? In the phonetic/phonemic domain, what proportion of the phoneme inventory can we expect to sample in a text of a given length? Answering these questions in a quantifiable way is tricky, but asking them is necessary. The cumulative col- lection of Illustrative Texts published in the Illustration series in this journal over more than four decades (mostly renditions of the ‘North Wind and the Sun’) gives us an ideal dataset for pursuing these questions. Here we investigate a tractable subset of the above questions, namely: What proportion of a language’s phoneme inventory do these texts enable us to recover, in the minimal sense of having at least one allophone of each phoneme? We find that, even with this low bar, only three languages (Modern Greek, Shipibo and the Treger dialect of Breton) attest all phonemes in these texts.

In phonology, these two parts are almost always studied independently, viz. usage-based phonology typically investigates the lexicon and generative phonology usually focuses on the grammar. One reason is when the reader does not learn and understand in advance the science of how to read the Qur’an correctly and well, known as the science of Tajwid. Among the discussions of Tajwid which plays an important role in maintaining the meaning of the Qur’an verse is the science of Makharij al-Huruf. This science learns how to pronounce the letters of the Qur’an properly and correctly and in accordance with what was taught by the Prophet Muhammad. Mistakes in pronounciation can damage the meaning of the verse, but on the other hand there are also those that do not damage the meaning. The existing alignment algorithms that is used to analayze the writing will require a large training data to obtain a good result. The paper describes our methodology in acquiring a parallel text corpus of Standard Malay and Malay dialects, particularly Kelantan Malay and Sarawak Malay. Second, we propose a hybrid of distance-based and statistical-based alignment algorithm to align words and phrases of the parallel text.     Cognate Words in Mehri and Hadhrami Arabic Hassan Obeid Alfadly* Khaled Awadh Bin Mukhashin** Received: 18/3/2019 Accepted: 2/5/2019 Abstract The lexicon is one important source of information to establish genealogical relations between languages. This paper is an attempt to describe the lexical similarities between Mehri and Hadhrami Arabic and to show the extent of relatedness between them, a very little explored and described topic. The researchers are native speakers of Hadhrami Arabic and they paid many field visits to the area where Mehri is spoken. They used the Swadesh list to elicit their data from more than 20 Mehri informants and from Johnston's (1987) dictionary "The Mehri Lexicon and English- Mehri Word-list". The researchers employed lexicostatistical techniques to analyse their data and they found out that Mehri and Hadhrmi Arabic have so many cognate words. This finding confirms Watson (2011) claims that Arabic may not have replaced all the ancient languages in the South-Western Arabian Peninsula and that dialects of Arabic in this area including Hadhrami Arabic are tinged, to a greater or lesser degree, with substrate features of the Pre- Islamic Ancient and Modern South Arabian languages. Introduction: three branches including Central Semitic, Historically speaking, the Semitic language Ethiopian and Modern south Arabian languages family from which both of Arabic and Mehri (henceforth MSAL). Though Arabic and Mehri descend belong to a larger family of languages belong to the West Semitic, Arabic descends called Afro-Asiatic or Hamito-Semitic that from the Central Semitic and Mehri from includes Semitic, Egyptian, Cushitic, Omotic, (MSAL) which consists of two branches; the Berber and Chadic (Rubin, 2010).

Dari sudut istilah pula, Tajwid bererti megeluarkan huruf dari tempatnya dengan memberikan hak sifat-sifat yang dimilikinya. Ringkasnya, ilmu tajwid adalah ilmu tentang cara membaca Al-Quran dengan baik dan betul. TUJUAN MEMPELAJARI ILMU TAJWID Supaya dapat membaca ayat suci Al-Qur’an secara fasih (betul/benar), lancar, serta dapat memelihara lidah dari kesalahan-kesalahan ketika membaca al-Qur'an. HUKUM MEMPELAJARI ILMU TAJWID Hukum mempelajari Ilmu Tajwid adalah Fardhu Kifayah. Akan tetapi, hukum mengamalkan tajwid di ketika membaca Al-Qu’an adalah Fardhu ‘Ain, atau wajib ke atas setiap lelaki dan perempuan yang mukallaf.
