Mots-clé : adolescence, teen series, genre, classes sociales, minorités ethniques, homosexualité Résumé en anglais The construction of the American teenager through teen series (1990-2010) After teen movies became a bona fide cinematographic genre, teen series began to occupy a prominent place in American popular culture. In our research we investigate the construction of American teenage girls and boys through the first seasons of eleven teen series from 1990 to 2010: Beverly Hills 90210, My So-Called Life, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek, Freaks and Geeks, Smallville, The O.C., One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Glee et Huge. We observe the sociological, historical, cultural and political evolutions and permanent features of adolescence, taking into account social classes, ethnic groups and gender problematics. Key words: adolescence, teen series, gender, social classes, ethnic minorities, homosexuality 4 Table des matières Remerciements __________________________________________________________________ 3 Résumé ________________________________________________________________________ 4 Résumé en anglais _______________________________________________________________ 4 Table des matières _________________________________________________________________ 5 Introduction _____________________________________________________________________ 14 Émile ou de la télévision américaine ________________________________________________ 15 Première partie : Un genre à définir et à contextualiser. • By Jennifer M. Fogel a Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

  • Building Self-Esteem
Building self-esteem Press-Telegram, Daily Breeze, Daily News February 11, 2008 By A.K. Whitney, Staff writer When Raven looks at herself in the mirror in the morning, the first word that pops into her head is "ugly." When Myra compares herself to pictures of Hollywood starlets in magazines, she feels like a monster. Charlotte worries that only black girls with light skin seem to wind up with the cute guys. But all the outsider sitting on a folding metal chair about 10 feet away can see is three young women full of youth and potential. And yes, each is also pretty - Raven has great hair, Myra has lovely eyes, and Charlotte's dark brown skin glows with health. But it's often very hard to turn off the negative voices in your head, particularly when they're reinforced not just by the media but, worse, by peers and family. For Raven, Myra, Charlotte and 16 other young women who are students at Gertz-Ressler High School in Los Angeles, though, there is help. They all signed up to take part in a yearlong program organized by the Step Up Women's Network and sponsored by the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. Step Up Women's Network, a nonprofit organization, was started by talent agent Karen Popofsky Kramer after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The organization started in Los Angeles but has since opened chapters nationwide. The aim of this particular high-school program: helping young women, particularly those of economically disadvantaged backgrounds, work on their self-esteem.

  • As Heard on TV
Hugvísindasvið As Heard on TV A Study of Common Breaches of Prescriptive Grammar Rules on American Television Ritgerð til BA-prófs í Ensku Ragna Þorsteinsdóttir Janúar 2013 2 Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Enska As Heard on TV A Study of Common Breaches of Prescriptive Grammar Rules on American Television Ritgerð til BA-prófs í Ensku Ragna Þorsteinsdóttir Kt.: 080288-3369 Leiðbeinandi: Pétur Knútsson Janúar 2013 3 Abstract In this paper I research four grammar variables by watching three seasons of American television programs, aired during the winter of 2010-2011: How I Met Your Mother, Glee, and Grey’s Anatomy. For background on the history of prescriptive grammar, I discuss the grammarian Robert Lowth and his views on the English language in the 18th century in relation to the status of the language today. Some of the rules he described have become obsolete or were even considered more of a stylistic choice during the writing and editing of his book, A Short Introduction to English Grammar, so reviewing and revising prescriptive grammar is something that should be done regularly. The goal of this paper is to discover the status of the variables ―to lay‖ versus ―to lie,‖ ―who‖ versus ―whom,‖ ―X and I‖ versus ―X and me,‖ and ―may‖ versus ―might‖ in contemporary popular media, and thereby discern the validity of the prescriptive rules in everyday language. Every instance of each variable in the three programs was documented and attempted to be determined as correct or incorrect based on various rules. Based on the numbers gathered, the usage of three of the variables still conforms to prescriptive rules for the most part, while the word ―whom‖ has almost entirely yielded to ―who‖ when the objective is called for.

COLONIZER GEOARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST REGION A Dissertation DR. BRETT R. LENZ COLONIZER GEOARCHAEOLOGY OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST REGION, NORTH AMERICA Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester By Brett Reinhold Lenz Department of Archaeology and Ancient History University of Leicester June 2011 1 DEDICATION This work is dedicated to Garreck, Haydn and Carver. And to Hank, for teaching me how rivers form. 2 Abstract This dissertation involves the development of a geologic framework applied to upper Pleistocene and earliest Holocene archaeological site discovery. It is argued that efforts to identify colonizer archaeological sites require knowledge of geologic processes, Quaternary stratigraphic detail and an understanding of basic soil science principles. An overview of Quaternary geologic deposits based on previous work in the region is presented. This is augmented by original research which presents a new, proposed regional pedostratigraphic framework, a new source of lithic raw material, the Beezley chalcedony, and details of a new cache of lithic tools with Paleoindian affinities made from this previously undescribed stone source. 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The list of people who deserve my thanks and appreciation is large. First, to my parents and family, I give the greatest thanks for providing encouragement and support across many years. Without your steady support it would not be possible. Thanks Mom and Dad, Steph, Jen and Mellissa. To Dani and my sons, I appreciate your patience and support and for your love and encouragement that is always there. Due to a variety of factors, but mostly my own foibles, the research leading to this dissertation has taken place over a protracted period of time, and as a result, different stages of my personal development are likely reflected in it.

  • Baca County Teacher Resource
Teacher Resource Set Title Baca County Developed by Laura Douglas, Education ala Carte Grade Level 9 – 12 Essential Questions What impact did mechanized agriculture have on Baca County in the early 20th century? How did natural and human factors change the environment and contribute to the Dust Bowl? What role did the Dust Bowl have in developing agricultural policy? How does that policy impact Baca County today? How do Baca County buildings constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s inform us about life on the Eastern plains prior to the Dust bowl? Contextual Paragraph Baca County is the southeastern most of the 64 counties in Colorado, and was created by the Colorado legislature on April 16, 1889, named in honor of pioneer and Colorado territorial legislator Felipe Baca. According to archaeological evidence such as petroglyphs and stone tools and points, the area now known as Baca County was inhabited as early as 2500 BCE. In 1541, Spain claimed this area and by 1720 the Comanche had taken control of the area from the Plains Apache. In 1823, the area won independence from Spain and became part of Mexico, until 1836 when it was part of the Mexican concession to the Republic of Texas. Baca County became part of the Colorado Territory in 1861. By the 1880s, ranches were established and in 1889, a state legislator introduced the bill that created Baca County with Springfield as the county seat. In the 1920s, the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad led to the establishment of the towns of Walsh, Pritchett, and Bartlett.

  • 14. Swan Song
LISA K. PERDIGAO 14. SWAN SONG The Art of Letting Go in Glee In its five seasons, the storylines of Glee celebrate triumph over adversity. Characters combat what they perceive to be their limitations, discovering their voices and senses of self in New Directions. Tina Cohen-Chang overcomes her shyness, Kurt Hummel embraces his individuality and sexuality, Finn Hudson discovers that his talents extend beyond the football field, Rachel Berry finds commonality with a group instead of remaining a solo artist, Mike Chang is finally allowed to sing, and Artie Abrams is able to transcend his physical disabilities through his performances.1 But perhaps where Glee most explicitly represents the theme of triumph over adversity is in the series’ evasion of death. The threat of death appears in the series, oftentimes in the form of the all too real threats present in a high school setting: car accidents (texting while driving), school shootings, bullying, and suicide. As Artie is able to escape his wheelchair to dance in an elaborate sequence, if only in a dream, the characters are able to avoid the reality of death and part of the adolescent experience and maturation into adulthood. As Trites (2000) states, “For many adolescents, trying to understand death is as much of a rite of passage as experiencing sexuality is” (p. 117). However, Glee is forced to alter its plot in season five. The season begins with a real-life crisis for the series; actor Cory Monteith’s death is a devastating loss for the actors, writers, and producers as well as the series itself.
