Outbreaks of this pest result in high-density populations of larvae that can cause enormous damage to trees and forests. Studies have identified an influence of larval population density on gypsy moth development, but it is not known how EGM and AGM populations differ in their response to changing larval densities. We examined the effects of varying larval density on three colonies established from one EGM population and two AGM populations. All three colonies exhibited an optimal degree of larval survival and optimal rates of pupation and adult emergence at an intermediate density of five larvae/rearing container. The duration of larval development was fastest at the same intermediate density for all three colonies. Russo Abstract This study summarises the known records of the Macrolepidoptera species of the “Bosco Palazzi” area near the municipality of Putignano (Apulia region) in the Murgia mountains in southern Italy. The list of species is based on historical bibliographic data along with new material collected by other entomologists in the last few decades. A total of 207 species belonging to the families Cossidae (3 species), Drepanidae (4 species), Lasiocampidae (7 species), Limacodidae (1 species), Saturniidae (2 species), Sphingidae (5 species), Brahmaeidae (1 species), Geometridae (55 species), Notodontidae (5 species), Nolidae (3 species), Euteliidae (1 species), Noctuidae (96 species), and Erebidae (24 species) were identified. -

Life: The Excitement of Biology 1 (2) 95 Attraction of male Lymantria schaeferi Schintlmeister (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Lymantriinae) to traps baited with (+)-xylinalure in Jiangxi Province, China1 Paul W. Schaefer2, Ming Jiang3, Regine Gries4, Gerhard Gries4, and Jinquan Wu5 Abstract: Our objective was to investigate potential sex attractants for Lymantria schaeferi Schintlmeister (Lexpidoptera: Erebidae: Lymantriinae). In a field trapping experiment deployed in the Wuyi Mountains near Xipaihe, Jiangxi Province, China, traps were baited with synthetic sex pheromone of congeners L. dispar [(+)-disparlure], L. xylina [(+)-xylinalure] or L. monacha [a blend of (+)-disparlure, (+)-monachalure and 2-methyl-Z7-octadecene]. Traps baited with (+)- xylinalure captured 24 males of L. schaeferi, whereas traps baited with (+)-disparlure captured two males of L. dispar asiatica. These findings support molecular evidence that L. schaeferi is more closely related to L. xylina, which uses (+)-xylinalure for sexual communication, than it is to L. dispar asiatica, which uses (+)-disparlure for sexual communication. These findings also support the conclusion that L. schaeferi and L. dispar asiatica are sympatric in the Wuyi Mountains. This is due, in part, to its recent recognition as a new species (Schintlmeister, 2004) and earlier confusion of a moth population in China with a moth population in India identified as Lymantria incerta Walker (Chao, 1994; Zhao 2003). Erroneous reports (deWaard et al. 2010) that L. xylina Swinhoe in China was described as L. schaeferi by Schintlmeister (2004) have added to this confusion. -

HACKER Superfamily NOCTUOIDEA LATREILLE, 1809 Remarks to Classification In the European List of Noctuidae (FIBIGER and HACKER, 1991) we refrained from writing a justification for subdividing the family into subfamilies and tribes. Our understanding of the classification of the family has progressed since then, but only to some extent therefore several paraphyletic or even polyphyletic groupings still remain in the Noctuidae (s.l.) and in the other families dealt with here. Most of the tribes listed here are monophyletic and we believe that most of them will stand the test of time. In groups where research is lasting, we refer to the latest knowledge available. For example the family Noctuidae has now been divided into three families, the Noctuidae, Micronoctuidae and Erebidae, these corresponding roughly to the groups previously called “quadrifid“ and “trifid“ noctuids. Ongoing research, however, suggests that the arctiid clade might be derived from within the Erebidae (WELLER and MITCHELL, pers. com.). Other important results have been published in the last 13 years, some of which are: KITCHING and RAWLINS (in KRISTENSEN, 1998); KITCHING and YELA (1999); SPEIDEL, FÄNGER and NAUMANN (1996); SPEIDEL and NAUMANN (1996); POOLE (1995, and his catalogue from 1989); the North American Moths of North America (MONA) book series: LAFONTAINE and POOLE (1991), POOLE (1995), LAFONTAINE (1998, 2004); BECK (1996, 1999, 2000); the volumes of the book series Noctuidae Europaeae (1990-2003); and many papers in Esperiana. -

In this study, the development and survival of gypsy moths from all three subspecies on 13 North American conifers and three broadleaf hosts were compared. There was variation in the ability of gypsy moth larvae from different geographic origins to utilize (survive and develop on) key North American conifers. However, that variation was not consistent within gypsy moth subspecies, but instead was more consistent with populations from different origins being preadapted to utilize different hosts and having different biologic traits. Some Asian populations developed and survived well on some conifers while populations from Europe and North America gained weight faster and/or survived better than some Asian populations. Although development was slower and survival poorer on several of the conifers, first instar larvae were able to utilize conifers unless the needles were tough or feeding deterrents were present. Host phenology was also critical since the early instars fed preferentially on new foliage or buds. Gypsy moth larvae can utilize many hosts, so this makes it a very adaptable invasive species that warrants taking measures to prevent its spread. -

Sci. & Tech. 6(3): 17-25, 2016 A Study on Diurnal and Nocturnal Lepidoptera in Osmaniye, Turkey Yusuf HÜSEYİNOĞLU1 ABSTRACT: In this study, the fauna of diurnal and nocturnal Lepidoptera which are active day and night has been investigated in the east of the Mediterranean region of Turkey, Osmaniye province. Field studies were carried out during the years 2006-2008. By using sweep net and light traps a total of 407 specimens of butterflies and moths were collected from six different localities for this study. These specimens belong to 56 diurnal and 31 nocturnal species distributed in 14 families. The distribution of species, according to families, is as follows: Zygaenidae, 2; Hesperiidae, 5; Nymphalidae, 21; Papilionidae, 1; Pieridae, 11; Lycaenidae, 13; Crambidae, 2; Pyralidae, 1; Drepanoidae, 1; Lasiocampidae, 1; Sphingidae, 1; Geometridae, 10; Erebidae, 9 and Noctuidae, 9. The evaluation of literature revealed that all of the butterflies and moths species determined in this study are newly recorded for the Lepidoptera fauna of Zorkun plateau in the Osmaniye province.
