JAVED ANS^J. t^ Under the Supervision of Prof. MUHAMMAD YASIN MAZHAR SIDDiQUi DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2006 Abstract The seventeenth Century of Christian era occupies a unique place in the history of Indian mystical thought. It saw the two metaphysical concepts Wahdat-al Wujud (Unity of Being) and Wahdat-al Shuhud (Unity of manifestation) in the realm of Muslim theosophy and his conflict expressed itself in the formation of many religious groups, Zawiyas and Sufi orders on mystical and theosophical themes, brochures, treatises, poems, letters and general casuistically literature. The supporters of these two schools of thought were drawn from different strata of society. Sheikh Muhibbullah of Allahabad, Miyan Mir, Dara Shikoh, and Sarmad belonged to the Wahdat-al Wujud school of thought; Shaikh Ahmad Sirhindi, Khawaja Muhammad Masum and Gulam Yahya belonged to the other school. Shaikh Abdul Haqq Muhaddith and Shaikh WalliuUah, both of Delhi sought to steer a middle course and strove to reconcile the conflicting opinions of the two schools. Shaikh Muhibbullah of Allahabad stands head and shoulder above all the persons who wrote in favour of Wahdat-al Wujud during this period. His coherent and systematic exposition of the intricate ideas of Wahdat- al Wujud won for him the appellation of Ibn-i-Arabi Thani (the second Ibn-i Arabi). Shaikh Muhibbullah AUahabadi was a prolific writer and a Sufi of high rapture of the 17* century. -

CHAPTER XIX PLACES OF INTEREST The Panipat district has made significant contribution to the history and heritage of Haryana. Archaeological sites mainly Seenk, Naultha, Garh Sarnai, Jaurasi Khalsa and Beholi were Pre-Harappan and Harappan settlements and the centers of activity during pre-historic times. The discovery of Kushana bricks and Yaudheya and Samantadeva coins and Gurjara- Pratihara inscriptions indicate the extension of their rule in this region. During the medieval period, the district rose into prominence continually. Important monuments like forts, gates, palaces, mosques and mausoleums built during Sultanate and Mughal rule illustrate the importance of the district in that era. The places of interest of the region, which are known for their antiquity or architecture, and have acquired historical importance, are described in this chapter under relevant headings. PANIPAT TOWN Panipat town is located at 29º19'50" and 29º26'27" North latitude and 76º56'0" and 77º00'0" East longitude. It is situated about 34 kilometres south of Karnal and 82 kilometres north of Delhi on National Highway-1 popularly known as Grand Trunk Road parallel to which also runs the Delhi-Ambala section of the Northern Railway through the city. It is a major industrial town of Haryana. Panipat town has a population of 5,15,375 persons with 2,75,836 males and 2,39,539 females as per census 2011. In ancient times, Panipat was known as panprastha, a abode of water or a watery place. Some historians call it as panikhet, which means abundance of water1. The town is of great antiquity, dating back to the period of war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, when it formed one of well-known five patas or prasthas (Panipat, Sonipat, Inderpat, Baghpat and Talpat) which were demanded by Lord Krishana, being ambassador of peace on the behalf of Pandavas from Duryodhana. -

The Age of Akbar
CHAPTER 3 THE AGE OF AKBAR MUGHAL THEORIES OF KINGSHIP AND STATE POLITY Akbar is generally recognized as the greatest and most capable of the Mughal rulers. Under him Mughal polity and statecraft reached maturity; and under his guidance the Mughals changed from a petty power to a major dynastic state. From his time to the end of the Mughal period, artistic production on both an imperial and sub-imperial level was closely linked to notions of state polity, religion and kingship. Humayun died in 1556, only one year after his return to Hindustan. Upon hearing the call to prayers, he slipped on the steep stone steps of the library in his Din-Panah citadel in Delhi. Humayun's only surviving son and heir- apparent, Akbar, then just fourteen years of age, ascended the throne and ruled until 1605 the expanding Mughal empire. Until about 1561, Akbar was under the control of powerful court factions, first his guardian, Bhairam Khan, and then the scheming Maham Anga, a former imperial wet-nurse. Between about 1560 and 1580, Akbar devoted his energies to the conquest and then the con- solidation of territory in north India. This he achieved through battle, marriage, treaty and, most significantly, administrative reform. Concurrent with these activities, Akbar developed an interest in religion that, while initially a personal concern, ultimately transformed his concept of state. Many of the policies he adopted, such as the renunciation of the poll-tax (jiziya) for non- Muslims, had a solid political basis as well as a personal one, for Akbar, much more than his Mughal predecessors, saw every advantage in maintaining good relations with the Hindu majority. -

In the Chishti lineage through Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan, there are nine Pirs who are buried in Delhi, and many more whose lives were entwined with Delhi. I have compiled short biographies on these Pirs, and a few others, so that we may have a glimpse into their lives, as a doorway into “meeting” them in the eternal realm of the heart, insha’allah. With permission from the authors, to whom I am deeply grateful to for their work on this subject, I compiled this information primarily from three books: Pir Zia Inayat Khan, The “Silsila-i Sufian”: From Khwaja Mu’in al-Din Chishti to Sayyid Abu Hashim Madani, published in A Pearl in Wine Sadia Dehlvi, Sufism, The Heart of Islam, and The Sufi Courtyard, Dargahs of Delhi For those interested in further study, I highly recommend their books – I have taken only small excerpts from their material for use in this document. -

Devotional Paths 23 to the Divine CHAPTER You may have seen people perform rituals of worship, or singing bhajans , kirtans or qawwalis , or even repeating the name of God in silence, and noticed that some of them are moved to tears. Such intense devotion or love of God is the legacy of various kinds of bhakti and Sufi movements that have evolved since the eighth century. In class VI you would have read about the Bhakti poems of Alvars and Nayanars who were worshippers of Vishnu and Siva, respectively. Soon kings and chiefs built large temples for these gods and made land grants and other gifts to perform various rituals. Temple worship became elaborate, complex and expensive. Specially trained priests performed the rituals. People belonging to some castes were not allowed to even enter the temples. Soon, a reaction set in against such rituals and inequalities. New ideas on devotion to god emerged. Read on to know about it. Philosophy and Bhakti Ramanuja, born in South India in the eleventh century, was deeply influenced by Shankara, one of the most influential the Alvars. According to him the best means philosophers of India, was born in Kerala of attaining salvation was through intense in the eighth century. He was an advocate devotion to Vishnu. Vishnu in His grace of Advaita or the doctrine of the oneness helps the devotee to attain the bliss of union of the individual soul and the Supreme God with Him. Ramanjua also to a large extent which is the Ultimate Reality. He taught ensured a place for people of lower castes that Brahman, the only or Ultimate Reality, in temple worship.
