  • 2008 Erik Axel Karlfeldt Memorial Open Round 6
2008 Erik Axel Karlfeldt Memorial Open Round 6 1. One instance of this type of event which involved Matt Prater decided the 2005 Aloha Bowl between Nevada and UCF. In 2004, a game-deciding instance of this by Ryan Gaudet was nullified by a penalty, one week after Alexis Serna did it three times against Gaudet’s team. LSU won both those games, defeating Auburn and Oregon State. Perhaps more famously, a Jerome Pathon touchdown, scored after laterals from Donte Stallworth and Deuce McAllister, was made meaningless when John Carney did this, giving a 20-19 victory to the Jaguars over the Saints. FTP, name this rare football feat, which results in only six points being awarded for a touchdown. ANSWER: missed extra point (accept equivalents; do not accept “blocked extra points”) 2. A rapper of this name put out such tracks as “Murder Makes Mo Mail” on his 1996 album De Vallejo. The title of a recent book on American culture by R. Jay Magill, Jr. refers to this kind of chic bitterness. Better known is a song of this name, which was sandwiched between two songs by Oasis as a Billboard number one single. That song details the flight of “Mr. Play it Safe” and remarks that “life has a funny way of sneaking up on you.” It speaks of such events as a “Black fly in your chardonnay” and a “No smoking sign on your cigarette break,” which are erroneously said to exemplify the title concept. FTP, name this Alanis Morissette song that complains of occurrences such as “rain on your wedding day.” ANSWER: “Ironic” 3.

  • S Top 10 Providence Shows of 2015,Top 20 Albums of 2015
Rob’s Top 10 Providence Shows of 2015 St. Vincent; Photo Credit: Kendra Whitcomb Another year in our wonderful little city of Providence has passed and it has been a great year for live music in The Creative Capital. A few shows happened in a few unlikely spots, some big names had their first ever shows in Providence and local acts showed that they could still put on a party. I wasn’t able to make it out to every show going on, but there are a good number that I got to check out in 2015 that’ll always stick in my mind. Here are my Top 10 Providence Shows of the year: 10.) Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls @ Fete Music Hall 12/15 When this show got announced a few months ago you could sense the anticipation. And no wonder — Turner and his band of Sleeping Souls delivered with an energetic show that captivated a sold out crowd in the ballroom of Fete Music Hall. It was also their first ever show in Rhode Island. A performance that lasted over 2 hours included some of his newer material “Get Better” and “Josephine” along with the classics “Peggy Sang The Blues,” “Reasons Not To Be An Idiot” and “I Still Believe.” Boston pop punks Rebuilder and The Homeless Gospel Choir, the folk punk project of Pittsburgh based musician Derek Zanetti, opened up the night to set a vibrant tone for an extremely enjoyable show. 9.) Sebadoh @ The Met 6/6 Ever since my early college days I’ve been a huge fan of Lou Barlow whether as the bassist for ’80s alternative rock legends Dinosaur Jr.

  • T Miss Shows of May
Mike D’s Top Five Can’t Miss Shows of May 1. Sat, May 9: Power Of Love (Huey Lewis & The News Cover Band), Hippy Johnny (The Modern Lovers Cover Band), Pretendica (Pretenders / Elastica Cover Band); 8pm doors / 9pm show; All ages; $10 advance / $12 day of; The Met, 1005 Main St., Pawtucket. Boston’s Power of Love is bringing what Rhode Island has always needed: a Huey Lewis & The News Cover Band. Every time Huey comes to town, I want to go and pay homage to the music, but I don’t want to pay $50. And pay homage is exactly what Power Of Love does while playing Huey’s music. The band doesn’t try to be ironic or tongue in cheek; they do an ernest job of playing the original arrangements, but attacking with a fierce rock ‘n’ roll savagery. The five piece and full horn section from Boston are composed of many former and current members of Boston indie and punk bands such as Big D And The Kids Table, The Fatal Flaw, Razors In The Night, and more. They created a scene in Boston with other friends and musicians doing cover bands to acts like Billy Joel, Prince and Cheap Trick. In Boston, they started with a modest crowd and now play to sold out rooms. This is the first time they have come to the area and are bringing their friends Pretendica (Prentenders & Elastica Cover Band). And this show also marks the second appearance of Providence’s premier Modern Lovers Cover Band, Hippy Johnny.
