A candid, sometimes stunning personal account of one of television's creative greats!!!!By aussietvhobbyistAs a longtime fan of Steven Bochco's tv shows, including but not limited to ""; "LA Law"; "NYPD Blue"; and "City of Angels", I was absolutely captivated by this candid, and sometimes stunning, insider's personal account of what it takes to succeed in the relentlessly competitive business of bringing high drama to the viewer. I admire his courage; and the extraordinary lengths he went to to protect the creative outputs of those he truly believed in, which, ultimately served to ensure tv execs would not dumb down tv viewers into the future. Bochco has proven that viewers make intelligent tv entertainment choices, given that he has had at least one of his signature hits screening consistently between the years 1981 and 2005 (ie. an amazing 25 years). It is also interesting to note that in his first novel "Death By Hollywood", Bochco makes the connection to this creative competition when he suggests "....that people in Hollywood are always touching you - not because they like you, but because they want to see how soft you are before they eat you alive...."This line made me laugh out loud when I read the book a few years ago, and, of course, it was in the context of reading the novel's chapter opener; but in the real world context of a passionate producer of television drama investing so, so much energy into creating great tv, it is somewhat sad that there would be a bad apple out there trying to bring the sum of all the parts of something so right down in a heap. The best thing is that Steven Bochco is a true survivor, in many respects. He has left an indelible mark on the medium of television, and long may he continue to do so.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Candid inspiring.By butters cartmanAfter reading a brief sample and being floored by the part about his sister (I wont spoil it, check it out), I immediately bought the book. Then, I read the reviews. All are good but one gave me the impression it was more of a "personal memoir" than an "industry" book.Let me assure anyone in or out of "the biz"; this is a TERRIFIC industry book, written by one of its giants.Plus? He names names! It bugs me when industry memoir writers spill the beans about people but give them pseudonyms or hint at who they are, etc.Not Bochco. It's all there he seems fair too. If someone was/is awful, he'll say so ( tell us who). If someone was/is terrific? Same deal.Kudos for his bravery (or possibly just his IDGAF attitude).Refreshingly candid, interesting book from one of TV's titans.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Our new Golden Age of television stands on the shoulders of writers and creators like Mr. BochcoBy Clyde PhillipsNot only is this a book about Steven Bochco's remarkable and groundbreaking career. It is deeply human and nuanced. Brutally honest. About the business, other people... and himself. Our new Golden Age of television stands on the shoulders of writers and creators like Mr. Bochco; as they stood on the shoulders of Chayefsky, Serling and others before them. It's a tough and rewarding and, sometimes, heartbreaking business. Mr. Bochco explores it from every angle imaginable. But it is his personal story that grabs the reader and never lets go. Fascinating, provocative and humble. Highest recommendation.

Insightful, candid, and utterly entertaining, Steven Bochcorsquo;s memoir TRUTH IS A TOTAL DEFENSE: My Fifty Years in Television is an in-studio view of the inception of the second Golden Age of television, delivered by the man who helped create it. He shares the how-tos and better-nots of working with highly talented writers, directors, , and remembrances of building remarkable television and a memorable life. His remembrances include: Albert Einstein once wangling an invitation to one of his dadrsquo;s Sunday musical soirees; being nominated for an Emmy for the first ldquo;Columbordquo; he wrote, directed by some young director on the lot named ; (father of Gwyneth and Jake) teaching him how to have fun at work; Brandon Tartikoff calling to say, ldquo;Irsquo;m moving lsquo;L.A. Lawrsquo; to a better time slot. Yoursquo;re replacing lsquo;Hill Streetrsquo;rdquo;; ldquo;NYPD Bluerdquo; co-creator asking for an advance because hersquo;d lost $1 million betting on football games that day; Stephen J. Cannell turning down a cop show at ABC, telling their head of development that ldquo;Hill Street Bluesrdquo; was the best cop show ever made, and he didnrsquo;t want to compete with it; fighting ABC to hire Neil Patrick Harris for ldquo;Doogie Howser, M.D.rdquo;; and keeping friends and family close during his 70-day in-hospital cancer treatment with witty, heartfelt emails signedmdash;as time went onmdash;Cancer Boy, Remission and Retention Boy, Transplant Boy (Soon to be Transplanted Boy), and (The newly reconstructed) Steven. Writers, as he says, write. He also describes the creative arc of building his shows, including several script excerpts, the finances and finagling of modern television production, and more. Combining discerning and from-the-hip thoughts on the business of television writing and production, tales from the wild side, and personal lessons from his life-threatening and altering battle with a rare form of leukemia, Steven Bochco delivers a revealing, wryly humorous page turner.
