AONBs have been regarded for generations as treasured areas with special character, and are designated for the quality of their landscapes. The Forest of Bowland was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1964 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1949) and was recognised by the government as being of equal status as National Parks by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CRoW) 2000. -

3 Die Materialität des Teufels und ihre Wir- kung auf Hexenverfolgung und Hexenprozeß in ausgewählten europäischen Ländern und in den neuenglischen Kolonien Kernpunkt vieler Hexenprozesse der frühen Neuzeit in Europa und in den neuenglischen Kolonien war die Frage nach der materiellen Existenz des Teu- fels und ihr Nachweis. Teufelspakt, Teufelsbuhlschaft und Hexenflug - alles Elemente des Volks- aberglaubens - waren für einen großen Teil der Hexenprozesse zentrale An- klagepunkte in den Gerichtsverfahren und trugen sowohl in Europa als auch in den neuenglischen Kolonien zu einer Intensivierung der Hexenverfolgung in der frühen Neuzeit bei. Martin Pott bezeichnet diese Elemente des Volksaberglaubens als „Penta- gramm des Hexenwahns“. Er sieht den Hexenglauben als ausgefeilte Theorie, deren Inhalte im Begriff des Teufelspaktes kulminieren.196 Seit Menschengedenken gehörte die Vorstellung einer den Menschen nicht immer freundlich gesinnten, real existenten Parallelwelt zum alltäglichen Le- ben. Einerseits war sie in vorchristlicher Zeit eine durchaus wertfreie Möglich- keit, unerklärliche Erlebnisse verständlich zu machen, andererseits diente sie später dem Christentum als spirituelles Gegengewicht zum göttlichen Wir- ken. Maral Deyrmenjian Spring, 2020 Pope Innocent VIII (1484-1492) and the Summis desiderantes affectibus At the end of the fifteenth century, Dominican friars were authorized to persecute practitioners of certain local customs which were perceived to be witchcraft in the mountains of Northern Italy.1 A landmark in the chronology of these witch-hunts was the papal bull of 1484, or the Summis desiderantes affectibus, and its inclusion in Heinrich Kramer’s witch-hunting codex, the Malleus Maleficarum. While neither the pope nor the papal bull were significantly influential on their own, the extraordinary popularity of Kramer’s Malleus draws attention to them. Pope Innocent VIII, born Giovanni Battista Cibó, was born in Genoa in 1432 into a Roman senatorial family.2 Cibó did not intend to become a member of the clergy and, in fact, fathered two illegitimate children: Franceschetto and Teodorina. -

Some- time in the twelfth century Dolphin de Heleya was living here ; he had three sons-Henry, Adam and Andrew. John, the son of Henry, had issue two sons, Andrew and Adam ; he died about the year 1272, seised of a messuage at Heleya.l Adam, the son of Dolphin, confirmed to his brother Henry lands in Castleton early in the next century, and his name as a witness appears frequently in charters relating to lands in Whitworth about 1238, as do also those of Adam the son of William de Heleya, William the son of Peter de Heleya, and Henry de Heleya.2 In 1273 Henry de Merlond granted land to John de Heleya, on the marriage of Amicia his daughter to Andrew the son of John de Heleya .3 There was also then living Richard the son of Anketillus de Heleya, who granted a bovate of land in Heleya to Stanlawe ; probably it was the same Anketillus the son of Andrew chaplain of Rochdale, who by deed without date confirmed to his brother Clement a bovate of land in Heleya and an " assart " which his brother Alexander had " assarted." There was also Robert, son of Anketillus, who granted to Stanlawe lands in Heleya which he had from his father, Clement de Heleya.4 Sometime before the close of the thirteenth century [c .
