Digitizing Graveyard Inscriptions from County 2017 Project Coordinator: Dr Mary T. Brennan

The library and Archive of Kilkenny Archaeological Society (KAS) hold a collection of inscriptions from about 100 graveyards recorded by KAS members in the last century. The data is either handwritten or typed. This project aimed to digitize about one third of the collection and make the data available online on KAS’s website. Digitized inscriptions from 33 graveyards recorded between 1970 and 1977 (see TABLE below), are presented here in the form of searchable PDFs. The project was supported by funding from Kilkenny County Council under the Graveyard Grant Scheme. The inscriptions that have been digitized were recorded by Mrs Margaret Phelan, Mrs Madge Buggy, Ms Rita Harte, Mrs Claire Murphy and Mr Gerald Cleere in the 1970s. At that time many graveyards, particularly those with ruined churches were poorly maintained, tomb stones were fallen over, broken and covered with lichen, consequently the records are sometimes incomplete and inscriptions and dates that were indecipherable may be inaccurate. This work is therefore intended to complement future graveyard recording projects and supply inscriptions where they have eroded away since the 1970s.
