CLINICAL INITIATIVES AND HOSPITAL LEADERSHIP: As Associate Clinical Director, Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC), Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Bedford MA*

2006 Established the Memory Diagnostic Clinic Patients seen jointly by a neurologist and neuropsychologist for initial diagnosis and treatment recommendations 2006 Established the Management Clinic Patients who already have a diagnosis and are in the moderate stage of dementia seen jointly by a nurse practitioner and social worker 2007 Developed plan to re-design the Special Care Dementia Unit (Building 62) Comprehensive plan developed to redesign all 3 floors of building 62 to enhance clinical care and research capabilities 2007 Established the Center for Translational Cognitive Neuroscience (www.ctcn.org) The mission of the center is to: • Use cognitive neuroscience research to improve the lives of individuals with cognitive and emotional disorders • Build bridges between cognitive neuroscience research and investigators using other research techniques • Educate clinicians and scientists in cognitive neuroscience and how it can be applied to understanding cognitive and emotional brain disorders

*The Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC) at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, MA, is one of 20 GRECCs across the country, each working to improve the care of older adults through research and educational initiatives (http://www1.va.gov/grecc/). The from 2004-2010 the Bedford GRECC (which included neurology services) was comprised of a 90-bed inpatient dementia unit, several outpatient clinics (including a memory diagnostic clinic, dementia management clinic, and general neurology clinic), and a research program of ~15 investigators with ~$7 million in overall grant funding.

Initiative was later rolled out throughout the VA New England Network 2010 Created a new, merit and seniority system of payment for physicians, eliminating the prior arbitrary and uneven pay-panel system.
