2.1 STONES FOR DRY-STACKED STONE WALL

A. Natural surface deposit weathered local stone, light gray in color, colloquially known as Sierra White Granite; roughly rectangular in shape with weathered edges. Sources may be available at rock in the Sierra Nevada region. Stones for wall sections are to be sound, hard, and shaped as shown on Drawings. Slight natural spotting, streaking or color variations will be acceptable on the exposed faces, providing there is no structural deterioration.

B. Granite may be salvaged from the project site and as available from grading operations. Granite salvaged from grading operations shall be shaped to sizes indicated on Drawings, and to remove sharp edges.

3.2 EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL

A. See Section 31 23 00.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Roughly shape stone with a to approximate fit. Knock off weak portions. Knob corners and returns square.

B. Remove or bury all marks (drill holes).

C. In walls, use large stones for bottom courses and large selected stones at the corners. Generally, decrease size of stone from bottom to top.

D. In walls lay even colored, sound, quarry seam faces to weather on face of wall. Lay face stones in random bond with maximum 1-inch-wide joints. Fit small stones into irregular spaces to give appearance of random sizes and shapes.

E. Distribute headers throughout the wall mass. Extend headers through walls that are 24 inches or less in depth and into core or backing of walls that are deeper than 24 inches.

F. Slope tops of walls to shed water.

G. Place dry-laid stone to conceal all footings. Dry-laid stone is to be stable and withstand climbing without shifting or moving. Distribute stones of various colors evenly throughout the work. Select stones roughly squared and pitched to line and place evenly at ends of wall. Lay stones that are flat or stratified in approximately horizontal position, not on edge. H. Brush free of dust or other foreign matter before placing. Place stones with largest at bottom as keys. Provide batter on back side of wall as necessary for stability.
