Tvoja (You) Y the Sounds of Russenorsk Consist of Only the Sounds That Russian and Norwegian Have in Common the Grammar of Russenorsk “A language is a dialect with an army and a navy, but my accent often turns out to be your dialect” (McCrum et al. 1986) Why study pidgins and creoles? Pidgins and creoles complicate the everyday idea of what a language is, what a dialect is, and where one language stops and another begins What is a pidgin? y A pidgin is a contact language used between two groups of people who want to be able to understand each other but who don’t have a language in common y They develop a new, working language out of simplified elements of each other’s language y A pidgin has to be learned; you can’t just simplify your language and call that a pidgin How pidgins arise y Pidgins arise in functional contexts like trade, invasion, or migrant labour: y they tend to have a small vocabulary ‐‐ usually a few hundred core words ‐‐ and a simplified grammar y the language of the people in control of the situation tends to supply the vocabulary of the pidgin y in cases where there isn’t a power differential, the pidgin draws equally from the vocabulary of all The example of Russenorsk “First used in trading between Russian fishermen and Norwegian merchants in Northern Norway from about the end of the 1700s ... The contact between the two groups was restricted to a few months in summer, when the Norwegians traded their fish for Russian grain and other commodities. The Russian Revolution in 1917 ended the trade” and thus the language (Winford 2003) Russenorsk y The vocabulary of Russenorsk is almost all nouns (thing words), verbs (action words) and a few adjectives (descriptors) y There are only two pronouns, moja (I/me/us/we) and tvoja (you) y The sounds of Russenorsk consist of only the sounds that Russian and Norwegian have in common The grammar of Russenorsk • Like all pidgins, it doesn’t use grammatical markers on the words, like “‐ed” for past, or “‐s” for plural – tense, person, number are expressed through words like “soon” stari gammel, snart pa kjaida slipom old old soon on church sleep which means: I’m old, I will die soon • Like most pidgins, it doesn’t use words like “the” or “a”, and it doesn’t use “is” to link subject and complement Russman bra mann Russian‐man good man or, as we would put it, The Russian is a good man • Finally, like most pidgins, word order is very important in signalling meaning Moja kopom fiska I buy fish but Moja tvoja pa vater kastom I you on water throw Making new words in Russenorsk –3 ways y borrowing a word from one of the source languages y using a word metaphorically y joining two words together to make a new one, like this: kuasjorta = “cow-shirt = cow-hide kuasalt = “cow-salt” = salted meat Defining pidgins y Not everybody agrees on exactly how to define a pidgin, but most pidgins are structurally like Russenorsk y Some pidgins are more complicated, for social reasons y they are extended to fulfil the social roles of a majority or official language, in which trading fish is only one of many functions! y A good example is Tok Pisin y As you’ve read, Tok Pisin is the lingua franca in Papua New Guinea y It is used for newspapers, road signs, and advertising, as well as everyday speech y It is the second language of approximately 6 million people Creoles What is a creole? y A creole is an elaborated version of a pidgin that is the native language of its speakers y It has a much more complex grammar and a much larger vocabulary than a pidgin y It develops this structure to deal with the range of situations it’s used in as a native language –the mother tongue of its speakers Creoles and colonization Historically, most present‐day creoles arose on plantations in the parts of the New World, of the Indian and the Pacific Oceans and of West Africa colonized by Europeans World Map of Creoles according to Holms (1988) The origin of creoles y Historically, most present‐day creoles arose on plantations in the parts of the New World, of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and of West Africa colonized by Europeans. The world of creoles / a world of creoles y Up until recently, creoles were thought to have arisen when the children of plantation workers learned a pidgin as their first language and then made it more complex y However, recent scholarship suggests creoles arise when a whole group of people need to learn a second, target, language but don’t have easy access to it This explains some of the extraordinary commonalities amongst creoles across the world. Most show some of the same simplifications as those made by people learning a second language. Most also have a European base and the Caribbean creoles, at least, have some West African languages in common. Caribbean English Creoles Origin of CECs y In the Caribbean, most of the indigenous people were exterminated soon after contact y The English bought slaves in Africa and brought them over to work on sugar plantations y The English were dominant, so the creoles were based on their vocabulary y But English remained the language of the masters, so a continuum often developed Creole continuum ‐ The creole shades into the lexifier language (English) and they cannot be distinguished, either in the community or in its speakers: “Nearly all speakers of English in Jamaica could be arranged in a sort of linguistic continuum, ranging from the speech of the most backward peasant or labourer all the way to that of the well-educated urban professional. Each speaker represents not a single point but a span on this continuum, for he [or she] is usually able to adjust his speech upward or downward for some distance on it.” (DeCamp 1961) Is there one language or are there two languages in a creole continuum? Costa Rican English Creole http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=vSHrbGktpl4 The grammar of CECs y Are somewhere between European and African y African: West African languages tend not to indicate the tense (time) on the verb but they do indicate whether the action is continuous or finished y European languages indicate the time on the verb but not the aspect (continuous / completed) y Caribbean English Creoles use the African system: English: I sang [past tense] there JEC: Mi don sing [completed action] dere The vocabulary of CECs y most words in a CEC are of European origin, though in some cases there has been shift in meaning, e.g., “sweet” in JEC is not an adjective any more, but a verb that means “to make me feel good” y In JEC, a few hundred African words have survived, as well as translated compounds like bad‐mouth (“to speak ill of” (cf. Mandingo da‐jugu, Hausa mugum‐baki, “bad mouth”)) y A well‐known characteristic of all creoles is the way they use reduplication, or repetition of the same word, to indicate plural or intensity. They maintained continuing re- lations with them....The trade dialect shows clear traces of these circumstances. It consists almost entirely of words borrowed from Trio or from Negro English' (Verslag der Toemoekhoemak-expeditie, by C.H. De Goeje, 1908). `The Nez Perces used two distinct languages, the proper and the Jargon, which differ so much that, knowing one, a stranger could not understand the other. The Jargon is the slave language, originating with the prisoners of war, who are captured in battle from the various neighboring tribes and who were made slaves; their different languages, mixing with that of their masters, formed a jargon....The Jargon in this tribe was used in conversing with the servants and the court language on all other occasions' (Ka-Mi-Akin: Last Hero of the Yakimas, 2nd edn., by A.J.     AN OUTLINE OF ROMANIAN PIDGIN ARABIC Andrei A. Avram University of Bucharest Abstract This paper looks at Romanian Pidgin Arabic, a contact language formerly in use on Romanian well sites in various locations in Iraq. The phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon of the language are described on the basis of a corpus of data collected during fieldwork. The data are discussed in comparison to those from other pidgins, with various lexifier languages. Romanian Pidgin Arabic is shown to exhibit features typical of the so-called pre-pidgins. Also discussed are the implications of the findings for the study of pidgin and creole languages, in general, and of Arabic-based contact languages in particular. 1. Introduction The present paper* describes a short-lived pidginized variety of Arabic used by Romanian and Arab oil workers in Iraq. The description is based on fieldwork conducted by the author in two locations, Kut (Eastern Iraq) and Rashdiya (north of Baghdad), over a period of five months (May- September 1984) and respectively six months (January-June 1985). The method used for collecting most of the data was participant observation (field notes). Supplementary data, in particular lists of lexical items, were elicited through interviews on location with four informants, who had been working on Romanian well sites in Iraq for periods ranging from two to five years. The sociolinguistic situation under which this Romanian Arabic Pidgin (henceforth RPA) emerged can be outlined as follows. The participants in the language-contact situation consisted of speakers of Romanian, Egyptian Arabic and Iraqi Arabic respectively. Only a very small minority spoke (some) English.

    AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST The Unsociability of Commercial Seafaring: Language Practice and Ideology in Maritime Technocracy SoniaNeelaDas ABSTRACT This article explores the language practices and language ideologies of maritime technocracy and inquires into the imagined and real gaps involved in sustaining channels of sociable talk aboard cargo ships. Lacking knowledge of the routines, practices, and beliefs impacting seafarers’ productivity, shipping industry leaders turn to Christian ministries to identify infrastructural or logistical gaps in the operation of communications media networks and deficiencies in the language policies and interactional practices that animate them. These converging profit- driven and ethical projects collectively support a technocratic language ideology. It locates risks to the supply chain in presumptions of miscommunications caused by the lack of English-language use and unsociability caused by the lack of convivial talk among seafarers for channeling information about these risks. Actualized by strategies that affirm the value of face-to-face talk and online chatting rather than solitary reading, maritime technocracy standardizes the logistical coordination of media infrastructures and labor and language policies. This article draws on ethnographic research aboard cargo ships and at Christian centers to elucidate the logic of maritime technocracies in Newark and Montreal, two seaports with different governance structures highlighting the internal differences of a shipping industry facing crises due to automation, outsourcing, and neoliberal reform. Vanhala-Aniszewski Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang 2010 The way we speak in communication situations is determined by two major factors: (1) situational: where, on what topic, and with whom we speak, what our role is in the speech act, and (2) personal: what our linguistic background is. The first factor means that conversation is very different at home, in the street, at work, and at a reception. It also reflects the way people communicate in various roles: as a teacher, as a clerk at a service desk, as a parent, as a professional or amateur volleyball player, as a priest at a wedding, as a tourist, etc. A person can have several roles during her/his life, or even during a single day, as can easily be seen from the examples just mentioned. It is not by chance that systematic scientific interest in the first factor started with rather standardized situations of major social significance, such as doctor/patient and pilot/ controller conversations. In this paper I will consider the second factor determining our communicative behaviour: our linguistic background. I will try to give a short overview of Russian research on these issues through some concrete examples. Evidence from other languages, including Finnish, is given in order to describe parallel and (for most readers of this volume) more familiar cases. In view of the lack of research on the topic, I will also put forward questions and hypotheses on the nature of these phenomena.

  • Of Russian-Chinese Trade Pidgin
    Language Contacts on the Russian-Chinese Border: the ‘Second Birth’ of Russian-Chinese Trade Pidgin Kapitolina Fedorova State borders can be seen as both physical and symbolic barriers, prohibiting any uncontrolled transition between neighboring countries. At the same time the very fact of a border’s existence inevitably provokes various language and cultural contacts on near-boundary territories. These contacts may induce serious changes in local communities’ verbal behaviour, even resulting in the appearance of new hybrid linguistic systems like pidgin and Creole languages. For a long period in history the border between the Russian Empire and China was a place of constant and intensive cultural and language contacts that gave birth to a trade pidgin, the so-called Kiakhta language, or Russian-Chinese Pidgin. At the end of the 1930s the border between China and the USSR was closed, many Chinese were deported from the border regions, and any contact became impossible (Perekhval’skaia 2007). Russian-Chinese Pidgin passed out of use and was soon forgotten. After Perestroika in the Soviet Union trade on the Russian-Chinese border started again, with a great deal of seasonal migration between the two countries (Sharmashkeeva 2007). In communicating with each other Russian and Chinese speakers use different language forms, some of which resemble those typical of the Russian-Chinese Pidgin of the past. What is more, the language attitudes of speakers and the sociolinguistic situation in border regions now and in the past are similar in some ways, giving the researcher a rare chance to witness the ‘second birth’ of a pidgin.

Section 1.1 will set out the linguistic and historical preliminaries necessary for our investigation. In section 1.2, we will take a closer look, first, at the historic Lingua Franca that was spoken for centuries around the Mediterranean; then also at the development and properties of lin- gua franca as a general category in modern linguistics. In section 1.3, we will explore the varieties of lingua sacras and the sources of their sacredness; then next go on to discuss the linguistic properties of lingua sacra, in particular with respect to sociolinguistics, speech act performatives and orality.
