Zach Johnson Foundation Annual Report 2020 OUR MISSION: To serve children and families in need in the Greater Cedar Rapids area What a year this has been... We kicked off 2020 with big plans for our 10th annual Zach Johnson Foundation Classic and Gala and a summer full of academic programs including Kids on Course University To serve children for 750 elementary students, Scholar Camp for our middle-schoolers and High School Academy for our oldest students. and families in need Then the COVID-19 pandemic came, turning our plans upside down. And while many of us were anxious and disappointed, we quickly realized we needed to focus on the evolving needs of our students and their families, many of whom were facing in the Greater unimaginable challenges. Our Kids on Course staff were in immediate contact with students and families – arranging for deliveries of food boxes, books and learning packets Cedar Rapids area and supporting our students through remote tutoring. The derecho that tore through Cedar Rapids in August was a devastating blow to our community. We rallied around our kids and families – connecting them to community resources and assisting them with immediate needs such as home repairs and food. And while this has been an incredibly challenging year, there have been bright spots. I was humbled to be named the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award – an honor that simply would not have been possible without the support of the Cedar Rapids community and our donors’ belief in our mission. While the needs and incredible potential of the students we serve have never been greater, every day we see the impact of our donors’ generosity and investments. The progress we are making is real and we look forward to our inaugural class of Kids on Course students graduating in the spring of 2022. To our donors and partners who have let us share in their generosity and commitment, and on behalf of our dedicated Board, thank you. With sincere gratitude, Zach & Kim Johnson Why does it MATTER? Kids who are behind in reading in 4th grade are: 4x more likely to drop out of high school more likely to not graduate from 13x high school on time Kids who drop out of high school are: Ineligible for 90% of jobs in America 2x more likely to abused drugs more likely to be involved in gangs 5x and more likely to go to prison OUR IMPACT Close the opportunity gap so all kids can have the chance to achieve their dreams 2020 SERVED AT A SCHOOLS 9 GLANCE HOURS TUTURING 11,798 Due to multiple school closures this year, after school tutoring at all grade levels was held both virtually and in-person as the buildings allowed. Like many others, we felt COVID-19 would be around for a couple of months and then fizzle out. Boy were we wrong. And like many other nonprofits, we had to cancel our premiere fundraiser for the year. The health and safety of our participants, Zach, other celebrities, pros and our staff had always been and continued to be our top priority while thinking through incredibly difficult decisions. In lieu of our regular event, we hosted a virtual gala on June 6, which raised nearly $150,000 for our Kids on Course program. The virtual gala was an hour-long program that was streamed live via Facebook. It featured many of Zach’s musically-inclined friends like Eric Paslay and Phillip Phillips and entertainment from Kelley James and Dallas Clark. TOP FIVE HIGHLIGHTS for the Zach Johnson Foundation in 2020 VIRTUAL GALA 01 Due to COVID-19, we held a virtual gala in lieu of our annual ZJF Classic tournament and gala. We were overwhelmed by the support and enjoyed seeing faces from all over the world. COVID-19 RESPONSE 02 Our mission continues in different and new ways. As we pivoted plans in 2020, Kids on Course staff provided remote learning, food deliveries, passed out meals, and made sure students were connected. DERECHO RESPONSE 03 The derecho devastated our community with students in our program at the heart of needing assistance. Kids on Course addressed immediate needs, such as helping a family get a new trailer through FEMA and providing financial assistance with funding from a generous donor. EXPANSION 04 We expanded to Cedar River Academy at Taylor this fall and proudly welcomed its inaugural class of first graders. PAYNE STEWART AWARD 05 In the midst of a difficult year, Zach received the Payne Stewart Award. It was a humbling tribute to Zach, the work of his Foundation and the support of donors, volunteers and staff that make our work possible. DREAM BIG. We are believers in the impossible.
