2 Payne Stewart Three-time major winner and SMU alumni Payne Stewart tragically passed away in October of 1999, but his impact on the world of golf and the Mustangs’ program will last forever.

Stewart graduated from SMU in 1979 after winning the individual Southwest Conference championship that season. Stewart’s professional career began on the Asian Tour in 1979 and he won two tournaments in 1981. He then earned his PGA Tour card the following season and won his first PGA Tour event, the 1982 Quad Cities Open.

Stewart would total 11 PGA Tour wins in his career, and won his first major at the 1989 PGA Championship. The SMU Phi Gamma Delta member also won the U.S. Open twice – in 1991 and in 1999 after famously holing a 15-foot putt to beat by one stroke. In all, Stewart recorded 19 top-10 finishes in major events, including four runner-up results.

Stewart remains as one of the most popular golfers in the history of the sport, known for wearing ivy caps and colorfully patterned pants. He was posthumously inducted into the in 2001. In 2000, the PGA Tour established the Payne Stewart Award, given each year to a player who shows respect for the traditions of the game, commitment to uphold the game’s heritage of chari- table support and professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct.

In honor of Payne Stewart’s commitment to SMU, the tournament bears not only his name and his likeness, but his spirit as well.

Held annually at a select, premier course in Dallas, the event features top business executives, former Mustang golfers, SMU Alumni and fans from the DFW region and beyond.

Having raised more than 1.5 million dollars in support of SMU, The Payne Stewart Cup regularly attracts national- ly-renowned speakers and PGA Tour professionals.

Brook Hollow Golf Club served as host of the 2014 Payne Stewart Cup.

4 Jason Enloe HEAD Coach SMU (1996)

Jason Enloe was named head coach of the men’s golf team on Aug. 8, 2014, after spending three years as an assistant.

Enloe helped lead a group that advanced to the 2014 NCAA Quar- terfinals and acheived the program’s highest national finish since 1954 (T-5). SMU won the inaugural American Athletic Conference championship and Bryson Dechambeau took individual medalist honors as well. SMU advanced to the NCAA Championships after placing fourth in the NCAA Regionals, including leading for a por- tion of the final round. Enloe and SMU also hosted the Querencia Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for the first time in 2014.

In 2013, SMU took second at the Conference USA Champion- ships and sixth at the NCAA Regionals. In 2012, the Mustangs tied for fourth in the C-USA Championship and were as high as second at the NCAA Regionals before dropping to seventh in the final round.

Enloe, an SMU alumnus, returned to SMU after a 14-year pro- fessional golf career, playing on the PGA/Nationwide Tour, the Canadian Tour, Golden Bear Your and the Adams Tour. Maxime Blandin Alex Higgs 15 2014 American Athletic Conference Champions April 29, 2014 1 Bryson Dechambeau 70-68-68-206 (-7) T4 Austin Smotherman 70-72-71-213 (E) INNISBROOK, Fla. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs posted the low team round of T12 Harry Higgs 73-74-70-217 (+4) the day to win the inaugural American Athletic Conference championship by five T19 Ryan Burgess 74-72-76-222 (+9) strokes after the final round in Innisbrook, Fla., on Tuesday. Sophomore Bryson 48 Andrew Buchanan 81-80-86-247 (+34) Dechambeau took individual medalist honors by five shots, finishing the event at seven-under par.

SMU won its ninth team championship and first since winning three straight from 2004-06, while Dechambeau earned the program’s first individual title since Will Dodson won two straight in 2005 and 2006. With the conference championship, SMU also earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals from May 15-17.

“This was a huge day for us,” SMU head coach Josh Gregory said. “For us to sweep the individual title and team title was incredible. We have had so many close calls; this one was long overdue.

“The guys truly brought patience this week and did well handling their emotions. We are fortunate enough to be in a great golf conference and we are honored to win the American. This is a huge step for our program and great momentum heading into the NCAA postseason.”

The Mustangs began the day one stroke behind No. 7 UCF, but quickly tied the tournament on the front nine. SMU, UCF and USF all shared or solely held the lead during the front nine. SMU managed to pull away over the back nine, led by Dechambeau’s three birdies over four holes (14-17) and senior Harry Higgs’ minus-four score over his last 10 holes. Over the last six holes, SMU’s lead was never less than four strokes.

Dechambeau, who collected his first collegiate win, held a one-stroke lead on the field to begin the final round, and never relinquished the lead at any point on Tuesday. The Clovis, Calif., native finished as one of just three players to finish under par for the tournament, carding a seven-under 206 for the event. Dechambeau was also the only player in the field to post two rounds in the 60s at the Innisbrook Resort - Copperhead Course.

“This win is a great step in the right direction for our team,” Dechambeau said. “I couldn’t be more proud of how we handled ourselves like professionals and for that I am most proud.”

Sophomore Austin Smotherman also earned a top-five finish, finishing tied for fourth at an even-par 213. Higgs tied for 12th after carding a one-under 70 in the final round, including a three-under back nine. Ryan Burgess tied for 19th to give SMU four players in the top 20.

UCF earned runner-up honors and No. 9 Houston placed third in the tourna- ment, eight strokes off SMU’s pace. USF took fourth and Louisville rounded out the top five.

SMU will learn its NCAA Regional destination on May 5, as the NCAA Cham- pionship selections will be announced on the from 10-11 a.m. during Morning Drive.

Dechambeau and the whole SMU squad are not only thrilled on the league title, but are looking forward to successes in the NCAA postseason.

“It was a great breakthrough win for me but I am more proud of SMU golf,” De- chambeau said. “This will be great momentum for us going into the postseason. I can’t wait for the coming weeks ahead.”
