Black Diamond Ranch * Hosted by SMU 2 Payne Stewart Three-time major winner and SMU alumni Payne Stewart tragically passed away in October of 1999, but his impact on the world of golf and the Mustangs’ program will last forever. Stewart graduated from SMU in 1979 after winning the individual Southwest Conference championship that season. Stewart’s professional career began on the Asian Tour in 1979 and he won two tournaments in 1981. He then earned his PGA Tour card the following season and won his first PGA Tour event, the 1982 Quad Cities Open. Stewart would total 11 PGA Tour wins in his career, and won his first major at the 1989 PGA Championship. The SMU Phi Gamma Delta member also won the U.S. Open twice – in 1991 and in 1999 after famously holing a 15-foot putt to beat Phil Mickelson by one stroke. In all, Stewart recorded 19 top-10 finishes in major events, including four runner-up results. Stewart remains as one of the most popular golfers in the history of the sport, known for wearing ivy caps and colorfully patterned pants. He was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2000, the PGA Tour established the Payne Stewart Award, given each year to a player who shows respect for the traditions of the game, commitment to uphold the game’s heritage of chari- table support and professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct. 3 PGA Tour Year Events Wins Top-10s Top Finish 1979 1 0 0 CUT - Colonial National Invitational 1981 12 0 1 9 - Southern Open 1982 23 1 3 1 - Quad Cities Open 1983 32 1 7 1 - Walt Disney World Golf Classic 1984 32 0 6 2 - Twice 1985 28 0 7 2 - Twice 1986 29 0 16 2 - Three times 1987 29 1 8 1 - Bay Hill Classic 1988 29 0 13 2 - Twice 1989 26 2 13 1 - MCI Heritage Classic; PGA Championship 1990 28 2 10 1 - MCI Heritage Classic; Byron Nelson Classic 1991 21 1 2 1 - U.S. Open 1992 24 0 5 3 - Memorial Tournament 1993 27 0 12 2 - Four times 1994 24 0 2 5 - Bob Hope Chrysler Classic 1995 27 1 6 1 - Shell Houston Open 1996 25 0 7 2 - Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic 1997 23 0 7 2 - Honda Classic 1998 21 0 6 2 - Twice 1999 20 2 5 1 - AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am; U.S. Open PGA Tour victories No. Date Tournament To Par Margin of Victory Runner(s)-up 1 7/18/1982 Quad Cities Open -12 2 strokes Brad Bryant, Pat McGowan 2 10/23/1983 Walt Disney World Golf Classic -19 2 strokes Nick Faldo, Mark McCumber 3 3/15/1987 Bay Hill Classic -20 3 strokes David Frost 4 4/16/1989 Heritage Golf Classic -16 5 strokes Kenny Perry 5 8/13/1989 PGA Championship -12 1 stroke Andy Bean, Mike Reid, Curtis Strange 6 4/15/1990 Heritage Golf Classic -8 Playoff Steve Jones, Larry Mize 7 5/6/1990 Byron Nelson Classic -8 2 strokes Lanny Wadkins 8 6/17/1991 U.S. Open -6 Playoff Scott Simpson 9 4/30/1995 Houston Open -12 Playoff Scott Hoch 10 2/7/1999 Pebble Beach Pro-Am -10 1 stroke Frank Lickliter II 11 6/20/1999 U.S. Open -1 1 stroke Phil Mickelson Payne Stewart Cup Established in 1999, the Payne Stewart Cup is the primary fundraising event for SMU Men’s Golf.
