20 // 2020-21 ILLINOIS MEN’S GOLF SEASON REVIEW

2019-20 SEASON RECAP SEASON HALTED DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC The Fighting Illini men’s golf season - along with all other continuing winter and spring sports - was abruptly cut short on March 12, 2020, when the Big Ten Conference and the NCAA announced the cancellation of all remaining competition through the end of the academic year. The cancellation affected the final four regular-season events - Louisiana Classics (March 16-17), Callaway Golf Next-Gen 2020 Challenge (March 21), Calusa Cup (April 5-7), and Robert Kepler Intercollegiate (April 25-26) - plus the 2020 Big Ten Championship (May 1-3), and the 2020 NCAA Regionals (May 18-20) and Championship (May 29-June 3) Tournaments.

GCAA OUTSTANDING TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD The Fighting Illini men’s golf program was recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for its success in the classroom when the organization announced its 2019-20 Outstanding Team Academic Awards. The GCAA Outstanding Team Academic Awards honor programs across all collegiate levels – NCAA Divisions I, II and II; NAIA; and NJCAA Divisions I and II – that record a team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. A total of 250 programs were honored for this academic year. In addition, the Illini were one of 60 NCAA Division I programs to earn President’s Special Recognition honors for compiling a team GPA of better than 3.5. It marks the fourth consecutive year that the Illini have been recognized with the GCAA Outstanding Team Academic Award.

RECORD FIVE EARN ALL-AMERICA SCHOLAR ACCOLADES A program-record five Fighting Illini men’s golfers were honored as Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars, as announced Wednesday (June 17) by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Seniors Bryan Baumgarten and Giovanni Tadiotto each earned the designation for the second consecutive season to become just the eighth and ninth student-athletes in program history to earn multiple GCAA All-America Scholar awards. They are joined on the list by junior Brendan O’Reilly; sophomores Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Tommy Kuhl were also honored, as 2020 marks the first season in which sophomores are eligible for the award. To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, a Division I student-athlete must have a stroke-average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. For 2019-20 only, they must have also participated in 40 percent of the team’s competitive rounds. In all, 16 different Fighting Illini have now earned 24 All-America Scholar awards from the GCAA in program history, with 11 golfers garnering 18 of those nods under the guidance of head coach Mike Small.

B1G POSTSEASON ACCOLADES Fighting Illini men’s golf was recognized by the Big Ten Conference as the league announced its postseason awards. Four our Illini were recognized, including three who earned All-Big Ten accolades. Senior Michael Feagles was named to the All-Big Ten first team, while junior Giovanni Tadiotto and freshman Jerry Ji garnered second team All-Big Ten honors. Ji was also recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. In addition, sophomore Adrien Dumont de Chassart was selected as the team’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. For Feagles, it marked his fourth all-conference selection, joining Steve Stricker (1986-89), Thomas Detry (2013-16), Nick Hardy (2015-18), and Dylan Meyer (2015-18), as the fifth four-time all-Big Ten honoree in program history. Tadiotto earned his second all-conference nod after also earning second-team recognition as a junior in 2019. B1G SUCCESS UNDER COACH SMALL Head coach Mike Small has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year 11 times overall during his 20-year tenure as Illinois head coach, and earned Dave Williams National Coach of the Year honors in 2015. He is a 2017 inductee into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame as well. The Illini have taken home the last five league championship trophies, and have won 10 of the last 11 Big Ten Championships* under Small’s direction. Along with his streaks of five consecutive Big Ten titles (2009-13 and 2015-19), Illinois posted three consecutive runner-up finishes from 2002-04 and took third in 2008 with Small at the helm. His teams have finished among the top five at the conference championship in 16 of his 20 seasons at Illinois.

Under Small’s direction the Illini have won five NCAA Regional Championships, including a stretch of four consecutive titles (2013-16), and have now made 12 consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. Small’s squads have advanced to regionals 15 times and have made 14 appearances at the National Championships including each of the last 12 seasons* (2008-19).

#B1G INDIVIDUAL HISTORY Over the years, Illinois has seen 21 individuals win Big Ten Medalist honors, including nine consecutive from 2011 through 2019. Most recently, then-freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart took home the medal, becoming the first Illini freshman to top the field since current tour professional, Nick Hardy who won the title his freshman year (2015) before repeating as the Big Ten Medalist in 2018. Dylan Meyer took the title in 2017, and European Tour member Thomas Detry won the title in 2016. Charlie Danielson split the title in 2014 after Luke Guthrie took the honors in 2011 and 2012, and Thomas Pieters won the tournament in 2013.
