REFLECTS ON PBA’S “MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT” “When collapsed on the alley after leav- ing the 10-pin standing to finish with a 299 in the finals of the 1970 Firestone Tournament of Champions, Dick Rit- ger was there to pick him up.” That statement by Bob Burrows summarized Burrows’ interview with 80-year-old PBA Hall of Famer Dick Rit- ger at his northern Wisconsin home, published in the Hud- son (Wis.) Star-Observer, in which Ritger addressed his role in the event that was ranked No. 1 in the PBA’s 60 Most Memorable Moments, celebrated during the PBA’s 60th anniversary season in 2018. Ritger, Johnson’s victim in that famous match, was sit- ting on the bench watching the historic almost-perfect shot unfold, and he related his recollections about Johnson’s 299 game and his own career in Burrows’ feature story (https://www.rivertowns.net/sports/4560493-one-ages- ritger-part-pbas-no-1-greatest-moment). Included in the interview is Ritger’s personal reflection of a memorable of his own: "I bowled a 300 at the Miller Tournament in Milwau- kee one year and you know what I got for a prize? The Perfect Game by Steve Felege Carol: Welcome back to sunny California, Steve. We've missed having you around here. Steve: I've missed being here, Carol. So, why did you send those goons to bring me back again? Carol: Well, the articles you've been writing about Glenn Allison have gotten a lot of attention, and I thought it was time we had a sit-down, you know, like the good ol' days. Steve: I'd like that! But...... before we do ...... could you untie me, please. Carol: No. Steve: But...... Carol: No. Steve: Fine. What do you want to know? Carol: First, I want to know why you never gave up on your crusade to get Glenn Al- lison's 900 recognized? Steve: This wasn't my crusade, it was yours. You were the one who told me to look into the controversy. You were the one who said this story was the biggest shame in the history of the sport. You were the one who explained how a high-ranking ABC official had stated that he would never sanction a . All I did was verify that you were right. Carol: You're too modest. Steve: Seriously, Carol. I did nothing but put the pieces of a puzzle together. The real heroes here are the people who came forward with those pieces. Carol: Like who? Steve: Let's start with Bud Pinchot. He was the one who called and told me four inspec- tors looked at the lanes after Glenn Allison shot that 900. He was one of them! I couldn't just look the other way when he said Allison's series should have been recognized. Then there was Timmy Smith who called and explained why the ABC didn't sanction that amaz- ing event. I also got encouragement from your readers like Debora Dubose. Isn't it amaz- ing that so many people feel so much passion for Glenn after more than 37 years? This outcome belongs to many people who supported Glenn Allison, including yourself. It especially belongs to Glenn Allison. His talent, patience, humility and loyalty to this game has inspired many people to seek a just ending to this story. And it's not over. This Ventura County Bowlers, Inc. saga won't be complete until his name sits atop the list he created. and Buena Lanes Present Carol: Well said Stevie. I should be a little Call 1-844-321-8100 • e-mail [email protected] stronger and able to compete a little bit better.” Visit us at www.trueamateurtournaments.com or www.tatbowl.com Weber last won the U.S. Open in 2012 in perhaps the most iconic moment in bowling history. He finished third in 2013 and 2015 (the event was not held in 2014) and missed the cut each of the past three years. “I feel a lot better going into this U.S. Open than in the last couple years,” he said. “I’ve had the hip and back problems, but I haven’t had any of those since March. I’ve completed every tournament I’ve bowled in, and I’m feeling better about myself. It’s just a matter of it clicking together.” While Weber stays committed to his workout regimen, he’s been on the lanes as well, competing on the PBA Regional tour, in local tournaments, and in his week- ly league. “I bowl league, which is no big deal,” he said. “I know the lanes are easy and there’s more mistake area, but I feel good about the way I’m throwing the ball. I’m shooting 740 every week, so that’s not too bad. Plus, there are local tournaments, and I’m making the top five every time I bowl, so it’s a matter of getting myself in shape.” This year’s U.S. Open will be held at Victory Lanes in Mooresville, North Carolina, where Weber won the 2016 PBA50 Mooresville Ford Open and where he’s come close to winning several other times. “I like the house, I know that,” Weber said. “I’ve won there, I’ve finished second, third, fourth. I like Moores- ville, I like Victory Lanes and the fans are great.” Shunning all thoughts of last year’s controversy and embracing a dedication to fitness and competition, Weber feels poised for his best U.S. Open performance in years. “I would love to make the show,” he said. “I’m not go- ing to guarantee anything. But I’m ready to go. I’m ready to compete, I like the house and I’m ready to do it.” Teachers continued from page 1 can History Classes. I am working on Mike to do that. Saturday afternoon the CBW Board conducted their Interim Meeting in the meeting room back at 4th Street Bowl in San Jose.

Sunday morning started bright and early with CBW board members along with Mary Cortani and her staff including Brenda Shiplett (Director of Marketing) and OFP photographer Alan Chan, along with Tournament Director Donna Morales and her volunteers from the Santa Clara County USBC association setting tables up prior to the first squad check-in at 9am. This year’s event not only featured a raffle but added a bake sale. There was also about six items for the Silent Auc- tion displayed. And also new this year, Operation Freedom Paws brought an array of their t-shirts and sweatshirts available to sell. Something for everyone who came to bowl or came to take the event in.

The first squad at 10am went on as scheduled and the staff at 4th Street Bowl were there to make sure it ran smoothly. Several OFP clients and their dogs were there to be a part of the event again this year and also there to show tournament bowlers just how quiet and obedient these service dogs are in a setting like this. You would not even know the dogs were there! One of the clients even bowled this squad and said it was the first time he bowled in 15 years! His dog was there with him behind the pair of lanes he was bowling on and he would return back to his side after he bowled each frame.

The 2pm squad nearly filled the center and bowlers looked like they were hav- ing a great time. Many won raffle gifts as they bowled. The bake sale had more baked goods than buyers and even when the items were reduced to half price at Page 10 CaliforniaBowlingNews.com October 17, 2019
