The Triton Trib Volume XXXXIII , Number 1 January, 2007 The Triton Trib Volume XXXXIII, Number 1 January, 2007 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I hope that you had a good holiday season and received the presents that they desired. Did you make New Year Resolutions? Did it include the Tritons? Did you resolve to become more active? Go on more dives? Attend more meetings? Make your voice heard? Did you resolve to bring your checkbook to the January meeting and sign up for the 50th Anniversary party? Will you resolve to say yes when Margy Levenberg, the chair of the Nominating committee, or one of the other committee members, calls you and asks if you want to run for, Vice President, Treasurer, or Director, or will you let the phone go to voicemail so you don’ feel guilty about saying no. I made several resolutions myself. The first is to go on more dives. The problem here is that my manager does not share the “Dive before Work” Philosophy. The second is to get more members more active in the club. The problem here is that I need your help. ENTERTAINMENT AT THE JANUARY MEETING We are pleased to have our very own Al Krenz presenting additional highlights from the Triton trip to Micronesia last June. Al presented in November on both Chukk (Truk) and Palau divesites and will concentrate this time on the Truk Odyssey portion of the trip. We received a lot of positive response to the first presentation and thought you might enjoy seeing additional highlights from the Tritons time on board the Odyssey. The giant lagoon is almost 40 miles in diameter and reaches depths of 300 feet. Aside from the sheer beauty of the undersea coral reef beneath the clear water, the bottom of Chuuk lagoon is the final tomb for more than 100 ships, planes and submarines--the legacy of a fierce World War II battle between the Japanese Imperial Fleet and Allied carrier attack planes. For the past 50 years these wrecks have rested on the bottom virtually undisturbed, creating the greatest underwater museum in the world. The warm tropical water, prolific marine life and ocean currents have transformed the wrecks into breathtakingly beautiful coral gardens and artificial reefs, home to hundreds of exotic marine animals and fish. Today, Chuuk lagoon is a mecca to the world's sport divers, underwater photographers and marine scientists. ><{{{{º> <º}}}}>< ><{{{{º> <º}}}}>< GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION NEWS! We have the pricing and a very brief overview of the menu, please reserve your space now before the price goes up!!. Our thought is to offer enough of an incentive that folks will pay early, this will help us in our planning. Payment must be received by the January business meeting for the early bird incenctive. The countdown continues – we will be reprinting some of the fascinating facts that have occurred over the last 50 years. We have covered the 50’s and 60’s – now back to the 70’s remember these? • Population: 204,879,000 • Unemployed in 1970: 4,088,000 • National Debt: $382 billion • Average salary: $7,564 • Food prices: milk, 33 cents a qt.; bread, 24 cents a loaf; round steak, $1.30 a pound • Life Expectancy: Male, 67.1; Female, 74.8 1970 – First Earth Day celebrated as environmental movement launched 1974 – Richard Nixon resigns as President of the US. 1976 – The year of the bicentennial – stars & stripes on everything from clothes to cars, furniture & more 1977 – Elvis dies. 1978 – In the Jonestown Massacre over 900 Peoples Temple followers die in mass suicide The chaotic events of the 60's, including war and social change, seemed destined to continue in the 70's. Major trends included a growing disillusionment of government, advances in civil rights, increased influence of the women's movement, a heightened concern for the environment, and increased space exploration. Many of the "radical" ideas of the 60's gained wider acceptance in the new decade, and were mainstreamed into American life and culture. Amid war, social realignment and presidential impeachment proceedings, American culture flourished. Indeed, the events of the times were reflected in and became the inspiration for much of the music, literature, entertainment, and even fashion of the decade Page 3 Mood rings, lava lamps, Rubik’s cube, sea monkeys, smiley face stickers and pet rocks all captured the imagination of Americans during this decade. The wildest fad surely was streaking nude through very public places! Families vacationed in station wagons and everyone wanted an RV. The fashion influence of Sixties hippies was mainstreamed in the Seventies, as men sported shoulder length hair and non-traditional clothing became the rage, including bell bottom pants, hip huggers, colorful patches, hot pants, platform shoes, earth shoes, clogs, T-shirts, and gypsy dresses. Knits and denims were the fabrics of choice. Leisure suits for men became common place, and women were fashionable in everything from ankle-length grandmother dresses to hot pants and micro-miniskirts. The movie Annie Hall (1977) even inspired a fashion trend with women sporting traditional men's clothing such as derby hats, tweed jackets, and neckties worn with baggy pants or skirts.

The Loss of the German Submarine Early Theories The most effective and successful branch of the German By John Chatterton, Richie Kohler, and John Yurga Navy in World War II was the U-boat arm. Hitler feared he would lose in a direct confrontation with the Royal Navy, so the German surface fleet largely sat idle at anchor. Meanwhile, the U-boats and their all- volunteer crews were out at sea, hunting down enemy vessels. They sank the merchant vessels delivering the Allies’ much-needed materials of war, and even were able to achieve some success against much larger enemy warships.

BTS – 2016 TEK Dive Show (Page 1 of 3) (Speaker Bios on last page) Room 1 Update on Deep Flooded Mine Project – Tilly Foster Mine Dan Wright & John Eells An update of the continued exploration of this deep flooded mine, once the largest and deepest in the world at the time of its closing in 1897. Located in Brewster, NY, the mine is rich in history and disaster from its creation to the present day. Few people have had the opportunity to explore the site due to private ownership. With the advancements in mixed gas open circuit and closed circuit rebreathers, the mine can now be fully explored. In 2015, the Wright-Team discovered and mapped side tunnels, conducted scientific research of the underwater microbial communities, explored to depths of 325+ feet, discovered cars and trucks dating from the 1920s, from which artifacts were recovered, and engaged the services of a psychic to try to find the remains of murder victim Robin Murphy. 100 Caves, 100 Countries Jeff Bozanic A goal to log 100 cave dives does not sound too difficult. However, Jeff Bozanic’s goal is to count only one cave dive in any given country on his list. This talk will document his progress to date, talking about his first 28 dives, and the projects that drove him to visit and work in 28 countries. • Undercurrent Book Reviews
Book Review Roundup from THERE WAS A TIME when great underwater photographers, the likes of Chris Newbert, David Doubilet, Jeffrey Rotmann, Roger Steene and Norbert Wu, pub- lished coffee table tomes of their wonderful photographs, but nowadays, few people buy this type of book. When National Geographic sheds its full-time pho- tographic staff, it indicates what dire straits the publishing business might be in. The digital revolution has changed underwater photography, and now everyone wants to take their own pictures and share them on-line. It has become remark- ably easy. In the wake of this digital revolution, a plethora of underwater pho- tography gurus has sprung up to reveal the differences between photographing through water rather than air, and the solutions to that. Underwater Some of these gurus are self-styled and not necessarily very good, but marine biol- ogist, underwater photographer Alex Mustard is the modern master of what he Photography does, and willingly reveals to others, by way of escorted photo-safaris, how he does it. Instead of producing just a coffee table book of pictures, he is more didactic Master Class in his approach, disguising his superb photos in this book as demonstrations of by Alex how to do it, or as inspiration to others to have a go themselves. It’s a master class and it’s stuffed with information.
