Dear Parent, Hope you are well, As part of our Science and Technology Week, we are pleased to inform you that we will be hosting special events and activities for all students. One of the highlighted activities is a visit by a special guest speaker, Astronaut Nicole Stott. Nicole Stott is an American engineer and a retired NASA astronaut. She worked for NASA for 27 years in various positions and is one of very few women who conducted a spacewalk. Astronaut Stott served as a Flight Engineer on ISS Expedition 20 and Expedition 21 and was a Mission Specialist on STS-128 and STS-133. Please find attached her biography which denotes her very impressive career as an engineer, astronaut and director of missions. Nicole is the first person to tweet from space, and is an artist who has created several paintings while in space. She represents a perfect example of why we believe art must be integrated into the world of STEM to inspire creativity and innovation. This celebrated astronaut will be interacting with all of our students virtually starting May 3rd until May 6th 2020. Please find below the scheduled visits: Grade Date / Time Grades 5 and 6 Sunday, May 3rd at 1:00 p.m. Grades 7 and 8 Monday, May 4th at 1:00 p.m. Grades 9 and 10 Tuesday, May 5th at 1:00 p.m. Grades 11 and 12 Wednesday, May 6th at 1:00 p.m. Zoom Meeting IDs will be emailed to all students the night before. Each class will submit questions to the teachers beforehand and 6 of the best questions will be asked in the session to be answered by Astronaut Stott. -

Why Do We Explore? Lesson Six Why Do We Explore? About This Lesson Students will work in small teams, each of which will be given a different reason why humans explore. Each team will become the expert on their one reason and will add a letter and summary sentence to an EXPLORE poster using their reason for exploration. With all the reasons on the poster, the word EXPLORE will be complete. Students will be using the skills of working in cooperative learning teams, reading, summarizing, paraphrasing, and creating a sentence that will best represent their reason for exploration. Students will also be illustrating and copying other teams sentences so that each student will have a small copy of the large class- room poster for reference or extension purposes. The teacher will lead a discussion that relates the reasons humans explore to the planned and possible future missions to Mars. Objectives Students will: v review the seven traditional reasons why people explore v write a summary of their reason why humans explore v illustrate their exploration summaries v relate the reasons for exploration to the missions to Mars Background Students do not always realize that the steps in future exploration are built on a tradition of Why Do We Explore? exploration that is as old as humans. This lesson is intended to introduce the concept of exploration through the seven traditional reasons that express why humans have always been explorers. Social scientists know that everyone, no matter how young or old, is constantly exploring the world and how it works. Space exploration, including the possible missions to Mars, has opened up a whole new world for us to explore. -

BIBLIOGRAPHIC ESSAY People make history; then, the history becomes documented through primary texts and official records. However, the history of Shuttle-Mir comes first from those who experienced it. This book presents the human side through a detailed chronology and background information. Much of the material was provided by the NASA Johnson Space Center Oral History Project for which dozens of Shuttle-Mir participants (see list below) offered their words, their stories, their memories. Historian Stephen Ambrose wrote in the introduction to his book, Citizen Soldiers, “Long ago my mentors … taught me to let my characters speak for themselves by quoting them liberally. They were there. I wasn't. They saw with their own eyes; they put their lives on the line. I didn't. They speak with an authenticity no one else can match. Their phrases, their word choices, their slang are unique — naturally enough, as their experiences were unique.” 1 Shuttle-Mir was likewise unique. And, its oral histories will continue through the years to illustrate the humanity and illuminate the importance of the Program. Also, this book reflects the changing of the times. The Internet came of age during the Shuttle-Mir Program, and many of the book’s sources reflect the Internet’s capabilities. For historical background, NASA history offices maintain an ever-growing library of electronic texts. NASA’s various Centers maintain Internet Web sites pertinent to their missions, such as the Shuttle launch records at Kennedy Space Center and human spaceflight information at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). During and after the Program, JSC hosted a Shuttle-Mir Web site that included weekly updates and interviews. -

Sylvia Earle Background Information Birth and Childhood Home She was born in Gibbs town, NJ on August 30, 1935. Her early childhood years were on a farm where there were many woods to explore. One of her favorite places was a pond. Her parent, particularly her mother was very influential in teaching her respect for animals. She always emphasized putting animals back where they were found after observing them. Sylvia took notes as a young child on the things that she observed. They also taught her not to fear the unknown. Horseshoe Crab Story Sylvia as a little girl at the beach was curious about the horseshoe crabs and how they moved. She was also concerned that they were stranded on the beach. She tried to pick them up, turn them around and sent them back to the ocean, not realizing that they were coming up on shore to lay their eggs and that she was really interfering with their mating. (see additional notes on horseshoe crabs) Reading As a child she liked to read. She liked science fiction, fairy tales, and animal stories. As she got a little older, she found that she liked non-fiction books even better. One of her favorite books was by William Beebe name Half Mile Down. He wrote about going down in the ocean in a vehicle like a submarine. In her book Sea Change and some of her other writings and interviews she refers to it frequently. After reading that book she started reading more non-fiction books and began liking the encyclopedia. -

National Aeronautics and Space Administration International Space Station [MISSION SUMMARY] began March 11, 2015 and ends May 13, 2015. This expedition will include the EXPEDITION 43 beginning of research projects focusing on the One-Year mission, which includes medical, psychological and biomedical studies with NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly and Roscosmos Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko who will spend a year in space. Expedition 43 also will include astrophysics research, physical science investigations and technology demonstrations. There are no spacewalks planned during Expedition 43. June 24, 2012 Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration1 ‐ Report of a Workshop at LPI, June 12‐14, 2012 – Stephen Mackwell2 (LPI) Michael Amato (NASA Goddard), Bobby Braun (Georgia Institute of Technology), Steve Clifford (LPI), John Connolly (NASA Johnson), Marcello Coradini (ESA), Bethany Ehlmann (Caltech), Vicky Hamilton (SwRI), John Karcz (NASA Ames), Chris McKay (NASA Ames), Michael Meyer (NASA HQ), Brian Mulac (NASA Marshall), Doug Stetson (SSECG), Dale Thomas (NASA Marshall), and Jorge Vago (ESA) Executive Summary Recent deep cuts in the budget for Mars exploration at NASA necessitate a reconsideration of the Mars robotic exploration program within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD), especially in light of overlapping requirements with future planning for human missions to the Mars environment. As part of that reconsideration, a workshop on “Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration” was held at the USRA Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, TX, on June 12‐14, 2012. Details of the meeting, including abstracts, video recordings of all sessions, and plenary presentations, can be found at http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/marsconcepts2012/. Participation in the workshop included scientists, engineers, and graduate students from academia, NASA Centers, Federal Laboratories, industry, and international partner organizations. Attendance was limited to 185 participants in order to facilitate open discussion of the critical issues for Mars exploration in the coming decades. As 390 abstracts were submitted by individuals interested in participating in the workshop, the Workshop Planning Team carefully selected a subset of the abstracts for presentation based on their appropriateness to the workshop goals, and ensuring that a broad diverse suite of concepts and ideas was presented. -

We also examined the revised histories issued by the US Coast Guard Historical Center and the US Naval Historical Center, both of which claimed The U-869 the sinking was a result of a depth charge attack by two US Navy vessels in 1945. Meanwhile, the U-boats and their all- volunteer crews were out at sea, hunting down enemy vessels. They sank the merchant vessels delivering the Allies’ much-needed materials of war, and even were able to achieve some success against much larger enemy warships.
