Ocean Explorers What are Currents? We are bringing the beach to you! Grab your essential oils, turn on some ocean sounds, get your yoga mat and join us to make waves as we learn about ocean currents through a few simple experiments. Ocean Movement Although our planet is called “Earth” it might be better described as “ocean” as over 70 percent of the planet’s surface is covered with water! Ocean water is always on the move in the form of currents. A current is the continuous movement of ocean water caused by several factors including wind, temperature and salinity differences; the Earth’s rotation; and the impact of the moon’s gravity (tides). In these activities we are going to focus on salinity and temperature. Salinity Have you ever tasted sea water? It’s salty, right? The amount of salt in the ocean varies but overall, it is about 3.5 percent salt. This means for every 1 liter (1,000 milliliters) of seawater, there are 35 grams of salt. That may not seem like a lot but it makes a significant difference in how currents flow across the ocean. Adding salt to water changes its density. Density is defined as mass per unit volume. The more mass something has in the same volume (space), the denser it is. Salt adds mass to water. What do you think would happen if you mix salty water and fresh (no salt) water? Sylvia Earle An American marine biologist, explorer, explorer, author, and lecturer Who is she? Since 1988 Dr. Sylvia Alice Earle has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence. Earle was the first female chief scientist of the U.S national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and was named by Time Magazine as its first “Hero” for the planet in 1988. 2012ANNUAL REPORT TODAy’s RESEARCH | TOMOrrOw’s OCEANS A LEttER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Dear Friends, As Chairman of the Board of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium for the past two years, I have had the great pleasure of being closely involved with the organization during a transformative visioning process that will guide the Lab’s future for the next decade. I’m pleased that during my tenure, the Board unanimously approved Mote’s 2020 Vision and Strategic Plan, which will guide the Lab and Aquarium’s future research directions and also provides a sustainable path forward that will be supported by new initiatives such as the Legacy Society, which honors those who have included Mote in their estate planning. The time and hard work given by Trustees and staff members on planning for the future has been much appreciated and will no doubt pave the way for a renewed emphasis on conservation and the sustainable use of our natural resources to the benefit of us all. Mote Marine Laboratory is at a critical juncture in its 57-year history. Not only are we embarking on a renewed course forward with a strong foundation and a clear path, but we are also looking forward to an impending change in leadership for the first time in nearly 30 years. In May 2013, Dr. Kumar Mahadevan, who has been leading Mote since his appointment as President and CEO in 1986, will become President Emeritus and Dr. Michael P. Crosby, who has been Mote’s Senior Vice President for Research since 2010, will take the helm. -

We will explore the oceans and seas of the world using maps, globes and atlases and find out about the incredible creatures which live within them; we may even use technology to create new and original monsters of the deep! We will look at the lives of Sylvia Earle, Jacques Cousteau and Eugenie Clark and find out why the oceans are important to them. In science we will look at habitats and find different ways of grouping living things. Then we will turn to the habitats of the sea and after researching deep sea creatures, we will learn about their adaptations. Alfred Wallis and Sandra Stalker are two of the artists we will focus on. If we are really lucky we may even get to speak to one of them via the computer!
