An "Authentic Wholeness" Synthesis of Jungian and Existential Analysis Samuel Minier Wittenberg University Eclectic approaches to psychotherapy often lack cohesion due to the focus on technique and procedure rather than theory and wholeness of both the person and of the therapy. A synthesis of Jungian and existential therapies overcomes this trend by demonstrating how two theories may be meaningfully integrated The consolidation of the shared ideas among these theories reveals a notion of "authentic wholeness' that may be able to stand on its own as a therapeutic objective. Reviews of both analytical and existential psychology are given. Differences between the two are discussed, and possible reconciliation are offered. After noting common elements in these shared approaches to psychotherapy, a hypothetical therapy based in authentic wholeness is explored. This multiplicity speaks to a physical disconnection between places as well as to a mental state of disassociation. Through process I enable likewise contradiction and unification. I use materials to reconcile the opposite ends of a spectrum of transformation. Documentation allows me to extract and distill the essence of an action performed in my studio. I use the body in the same way I use materials. I watch its influence on a space, situation and condition and force it to enter interim stages somewhere between pleasure and pain. The resulting pieces capture a metaphysical quest into metamorphic zones that show our interconnectivity to all reality, visible and invisible. The Body 3 In my practice moments of anxiety, discomfort, fear and risk have found a central place. While frightening, they have also been pleasurable. Control through restraint and direction seems to be an allowance for unrestricted and fearless pleasure. In “The Well” (fall 2015, fig. 1) a body is slowly submerging into an undefined depth of water. While submerged in water, the body becomes the only known, the only orientation and place. -

Individuation as Spiritual Process: Jung’s Archetypal Psychology and the Development of Teachers Kathleen Kesson See the published version in the journal: ENCOUNTER: EDUCATION FOR MEANING AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Winter 2003, 16 (4). “…The spirit has its homeland, which is the realm of the meaning of things… -Saint Exupéry The Wisdom of the Sands In the mid-1970s, curriculum theorist James Macdonald, in his discussion of various ideologies of education, proposed a category that he called the “transcendental developmental ideology.” This perspective would correct what he thought was the limiting, materialist focus of the radical or political view of education, which he considered a “hierarchical historical view that has outlived its usefulness both in terms of the emerging structure of the environment and of the psyches of people today” (Macdonald 1995, 73). The transcendental developmental ideology would embrace progressive and radical social values, according to Macdonald, but would be rooted in a deep spiritual awareness. Drawing upon the work of M.C. Richards (1989), he used the term “centering” to signify this form of consciousness. Macdonald termed his methodology of development a “dual dialectic,” a praxis involving reflective transaction between the individual ego and the inward subjective depths of the self, as well as between the ego and the outer objective structures of the environment. This method grew out of his critique of existing developmental theories (see Kohlberg and Mayer, 1972), which he thought neglected one or another aspect of this praxis, thus failing to take into account the full dimension of human “being.” Macdonald was influenced by the work of C.G. -

I attempt to show that this issue unites the tetralogy’s stylistic and thematic structure. My introduction deals extensively with the theoretical foundation and with the cognitive implications ofSein andBedeuten. The first two chapters contain a closely contextualized examination of stylistic devices. They deal with central pairs of opposites (and their inherent duality), with (leit)motifs and central metaphors. In these two chapters I attempt to show how Mann uses these stylistic devices to re inforce and reflect the constant interplay ofSein andBedeuten. On the Psychology of the Trickster Figure by C.G. Jung: It is no light task for me to write about the figure of the trickster in American Indian mythology within the confined space of a commentary. When I first came across Adolf Bandelier's classic on this subject, The Delight Makers, many years ago, I was struck by the European analogy of the carnival in the medieval Church, with its reversal of the hierarchic order, which is still continued in the carnivals held by student societies today. Something of this contradictoriness also inheres in the medieval description of the devil as simia dei (the ape of God), and in his characterization in folklore as the "simpleton" who is "fooled" or "cheated." A curious combination of typical trickster motifs can be found in the alchemical figure of Mercurius; for instance, his fondness for sly jokes and malicious pranks, his powers as a shape-shifter, his dual nature, half animal, half divine, his exposure to all kinds of tortures, and—last but not least—his approximation to the figure of a saviour. These qualities make Mercurius seem like a daemonic being resurrected from primitive times, older even than the Greek Hermes. His rogueries relate him in some measure to various figures met with in folklore and universally known in fairy-tales: Tom Thumb, Stupid Hans, or the buffoon-like Hanswurst, who is an altogether negative hero and yet manages to achieve through his stupidity what others fail to accomplish with their best efforts. In Grimm's fairy-tale, the "Spirit Mercurius" lets himself be outwitted by a peasant lad, and then has to buy his freedom with the precious gift of healing. -

THE CHILD ANALYTIC TRADITION OF THE SOCIETY OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY – BIRTH, DEATH AND BEYOND MELISSA JANE MIDGEN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of East London for the degree of Professional Doctorate in Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy December 2016 i Abstract This thesis seeks to chart the creation, development and eventual demise of the child analytic training of The Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP), the foremost Jungian Society in the UK. The brainchild of the Society’s founding director, Michael Fordham, the creation of the child training drew on the talents and persistence of many committed individuals. Through oral history interviews and archival research I weave together a narrative that will serve as testament to this achievement and offer first hand recollections for posterity. Through these sources the narrative also explores the difficulties that the training faced and which ultimately led to its eventual demise. Additionally I interrogate the current status of this tradition of child analysis and ask the question whether or not the tradition continues to exist and if so in what ways; I conclude that currently the tradition can only be said to exist in an attenuated form and that the future is bleak. In the course of the thesis I locate the SAP training within the development more generally of child analytic provision within the UK, the relationship of that to the child guidance movement and to the psychoanalytic diaspora, which made it possible. I describe the current obstacles faced by the child psychotherapy discipline as well as psychoanalytic psychotherapy in the NHS. -

Jung on Astrology Jung on Astrology brings together C. G. Jung’s thoughts on astrology in a single volume for the fi rst time, signifi cantly adding to our understanding of his work. Jung’s Collected Works , seminars, and letters contain numerous discussions of this ancient divinatory system, and Jung himself used astrological horoscopes as a diagnostic tool in his analytic practice. Understood in terms of his own psychology as a symbolic representation of the archetypes of the collective unconscious, Jung found in astrology a wealth of spiritual and psychological meaning and suggested it represents the “sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.” The selections and editorial introductions by Safron Rossi and Keiron Le Grice address topics that were of critical importance to Jung – such as the archetypal symbolism in astrology, the precession of the equinoxes and astrological ages, astrology as a form of synchronicity and acausal correspondence, the qualitative nature of time, and the experience of astrological fate – allowing readers to assess astrology’s place within the larger corpus of Jung’s work and its value as a source of symbolic meaning for our time. Summary Origins of Analytical Psychology The Swiss-born psychologist, Carl Gustav Jung received an M.D. from the University of Basle in 1902, then studied under Pierre Janet in Paris. Jung served as physician to the psychiatric clinic at the University of Zurich from 1900 to 1909, where he became a follower of Freud. Carl Jung and Alfred Adler were among Sigmund Freud's inner circle of students until around 1912 when they came into disagreement with Freud's emphasis on sex motivation as the central theme of human behavior. Jung's theory, which came to be known as Analytical Psychology, describes the libido as a generalized life energy rather than a sexual energy. He saw the libido as a type of psychic energy that expresses itself through universal symbols. Jung also disagreed with Freud's view that personality is determined by childhood experiences. Jung believed that personality is shaped by one's goals and aspirations, and can change throughout life. Jung's theory of individuation depicts man striving toward integrity of the innermost self. To understand this process requires an understanding of Jung's theories concerning the psyche and personality.
