R (Rico) Lie Processes and Communication Thesis code: CPT-80833 Abstract Due to recent developments, a lot of people worldwide are forced to leave their countries. Also Germany receives many asylum seekers at the moment. The German society supports them a lot. However, the question emerges, if the offered support meets the needs of the asylum seekers. By using a need assessment model, this thesis explored the needs of asylum seekers and the available social support services for them in order to see if the services are able to meet the needs of the asylum seeker. Emphasis was put in the analysis on the differentiation between formal and informal social support because previous studies with migrants showed that informal sources were preferred by them. Due to the fact, that situations of asylum seekers are not yet explored in rural settings, the study took place in a rural area in the west of Germany. Several villages around the town of Wörrstadt were explored. In total 16 interviews were conducted with asylum seekers and social support providers. Additionally, participant observation was used. The most important needs of the asylum seekers were learning the German language, finding a job and having clarity about their legal status. Different formal as well as informal social support services were found in the area of study, which served specific needs. The findings also showed that asylum seekers preferred informal social support over formal social support. The analysis suggests that both categories of social support services were not able to satisfy the needs of the asylum seekers effectively alone. However, by overlapping and complementing each other they were able to cover nearly all the needs of the asylum seekers in the area of study. This entails a need for the reformulation of the used assessment model and a rethinking of the organization of support services for asylum seekers. Key words: asylum seekers, need assessment, formal social support, informal social support, rural area i Preface You now hold my finish master thesis with the title `Meeting the needs of asylum seekers A challenge for rural areas in Germany?` in your hands. It is part of the master program of Development and Rural Innovation at Wageningen University. Writing a social science master thesis was a challenge for me because of my natural science background, but I really enjoyed it. I was thinking a long time about the topic of this thesis and I neglected a lot of them. What finally brought me to this topic was a sentence said by my mother. She was watching the news that reported about the increasing amount of asylum seekers in Germany. She said: `What will happen with all this people here?` This sentence and how she said it, stuck in my mind for a few days and finally led to the decision to write my thesis about asylum seekers. During the preparation for this thesis I finally decided to conduct it in my hometown. I am really happy about the fact that this was possible and hope that my findings will improve the support for the asylum seekers there. A lot of people contributed the success of this thesis, whom I want to thank here now. From the beginning on I felt very welcome in the area of study. Also it was my hometown, I was still new to the refugee relief group there. But I became part of it very fast. Everyone was open to my research and gave me all the information and support I needed. I really appreciate that. Whiteout the openness and support of the people there the thesis at hand would not have been possible. Januar 2015 48. Jahrgang Neujahrsempfang der Ortsgemeinde Begegnung der Generationen Saulheim beim Neujahrsempfang in Schornsheim Am 11.1. hatte die Ortsgemeinde zum Neujahrsempfang ins Bürgerhaus ein- geladen. Unter den vielen Gästen von Vereinen, Behörden, Firmen und der Ortsgemeinde, konnten wir auch einen besonderen Gast vom Ministerium für Umwelt, Landwirtschaft, Ernährung, Weinbau und Forsten, Herrn Dr. Theis mit Frau, begrüßen. Der Saulheimer Männerchor stimmte das Programm mit drei Liedvorträgen ein. Maximilian Fölix überbrachte stellvertretend für die Sternsinger den Segen für 2015 an das Bürgerhaus und informierte über die diesjährige Sternsinger-Aktion. Anschließend ließ er das Körbchen rumgehen und konnte den in Saulheim bereits gesammelten Betrag um 508,61 Euro aufstocken. Dafür ein herzliches Dankeschön an alle Spender. In meiner Ansprache berichtete ich über das, was die Ortsgemeinde im Jahr 2014 erreicht und geleistet hat und darüber, was im Jahr 2015 noch Gruppenbild mit Ortsbürgermeister Heiko Schmittbetz, Rüdiger Ebling, VG-Bürgermeister Markus Conrad, Ralf Fritsch, alles ansteht. Anschließend wurden Torsten Blenk, Reinhard Becker, Heiko Sippel (MdL), Edwin Henn, Helmut Sarne, Claudia Frey, Hein Nehrbaß, Gisela Ebling, die Erfolge der Saulheimer Vereine in Irmhild Henn, Uwe Wolff, Gitte Wolff, Jan Metzler (MdB) 2014 gewürdigt. Die Tanzgruppe DancEmotion, mit ihrer Trainerin Vanessa ür seine 35-jährige Zugehörigkeit Großprojekte vor ihrer Realisierung: die verdiente Ratsmitglieder, die für 5- bis Dechent, erzielte bei den Deutschen zum Ortsgemeinderat wurde Uwe Anlage des Gewerbegebietes an der B 9-jährige Mitgliedschaft mit Wappen- Meisterschaften den 3.

Mit einer deutlichen 18.00 U11 FSV - Moguntia Mainz Halbzeitführung der Jungs im Rücken lässt es sich dann guten Gewissens 19.30 U19 SV Gimbsheim - FSV / JSG aufbrechen Richtung Stadecken- Elsheim. Dort tritt die U10 zum ersten Punktspiel an und zeigt direkt guten Kombinationsfußball. Davon beschwingt nun schnell Samstag, 31.08. weiter nach Udenheim. Im dortigen Ausweichquartier hat bereits das „Heimspiel“ 10.30 U9 FSV - Fvgg. Mombach 03 der U15 gegen die JSG Rhein-Selz begonnen, und die Jungs von Christian 11.30 U10 FSV - VFL Fontana Finthen Hassinger, Ronnie Dietrich und Björn Meyer kämpfen sich rein in dieses Spiel. 14.30 U13 FSV - TSG Bretzenheim III Nach Abpfiff und Siegesjubel kann man es nun etwas gelassener angehen lassen, 15.30 U15 Fortuna Mombach – FSV / JSG da bei der letzten Station in Ober- Olm erst um 13 Uhr der Anpfiff ertönt. Die Jungs der U11 sorgen dort mit ihrem deutlichen Erfolg für einen überaus runden Sontag, 01.09. Abschluss dieses Vormittages: in nur 4 Stunden 4 FSV- Siege zu bejubeln, gelingt 11.00 U17 FSV / JSG - TSG Sprendlingen schließlich nicht alle Tage… 4 Stunden Einsatz für einen guten Zweck! U11 feiert deutlichen Auftaktsieg in Ober- Olm Auch in diesem Jahr betreibt unser Jugend-Förderverein seinen traditionellen Erfolgreicher Einstand für die Trainer Klaus Diehl und Mario Schneider mit ihrem Imbissstand an der Nieder- Saulheimer Kerb.
