Extract Catalogue for Auction Page:1 May 19, 2019 Lot Type Grading Description Est $A HORSE RACING - PHAR LAP Phar Lap (4 October 1926 - 5 April 1932) was a champion thoroughbred racehorse whose achievements captured the Australian public's imagination during the early years of the Great Depression. Foaled in New Zealand, he was trained and raced in Australia by Harry Telford. Phar Lap dominated Australian racing during a distinguished career, winning a Melbourne Cup, two Cox Plates, an AJC Derby, and 19 other weight-for-age races. He then won the Agua Caliente Handicap in Tijuana, Mexico, in track-record time in his final race. After a sudden and mysterious illness, Phar Lap died in 1932 in California, USA. At the time, he was the third highest stakes-winner in the world. His mounted hide is displayed at the Melbourne Museum, his skeleton at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and his heart is currently on display at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra. Dario Dicarla is an avid collector of stamps, antique toys and horse racing. He was kicked out of school at 15, after he was caught out at the TAB (his horse was scratched). He has had shares in racehorses since 1994, including a share of Arapaho Miss who won the VRC Oaks in 2007. His horse racing collection has focused on Australian champions: Phar Lap, Carbine, Rising Fast, Gloaming & Bernborough. The highlight is his Phar Lap collection, which includes pieces with excellent provenance, many being formerly owned by the key players in the Phar Lap story: auctioneer D.W.J.Gould, strapper Tommy Woodcock, owner Charles Davis, trainer Harry Telford and jockeys Jack Baker, Jim Pike & Billy Elliott. The collection of Racebooks include two great rarities from the 1930 & 1931 Cox Plate events. Brock, ‘Traducer’ from New Zealand Country Journal.4:1 (1880). A Social and Cultural History of the New Zealand Horse A Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In History Massey University, Albany, New Zealand Carolyn Jean Mincham 2008 i Abstract Both in the present and the past, horses have a strong presence in New Zealand society and culture. The country’s temperate climate and colonial environment allowed horses to flourish and accordingly became accessible to a wide range of people. Horses acted as an agent of colonisation for their role in shaping the landscape and fostering relationships between coloniser and colonised. Imported horses and the traditions associated with them, served to maintain a cultural link between Great Britain and her colony, a characteristic that continued well into the twentieth century. Not all of these transplanted readily to the colonial frontier and so they were modified to suit the land and its people. There are a number of horses that have meaning to this country. The journey horse, sport horse, work horse, warhorse, wild horse, pony and Māori horse have all contributed to the creation of ideas about community and nationhood. How these horses are represented in history, literature and imagery reveal much of the attitudes, values, aspirations and anxieties of the times.

Consequently many excellent Australian writers are here unrepresented, their work being perforce held over for The Second Bulletin Story Book, although it is work of a quality equal to that which is now given. Owing to the length of time which, in some cases, has elapsed since the original publication in The Bulletin, the names and addresses of some of the writers have been lost sight of; and their work appears over pen-names, The editor will be glad if these writers will communicate with him and assist in completing the Biographical Index at the end of the book.
