And the Beat Goes On... Through three sessions, Keeneland has sold 544 horses for $125,553,000--up 9.5% from a year ago when 497 had sold. The average of $230,796 remained steady with last year=s figure of $230,786. The median is down 10.7% to $125,000. Referring to the decrease in median, Russell said, AThe upper-middle is strong. Put back in foal Hill ‘n’ Dale’s Violence (Medaglia d’Oro), Yawkey Way and her Tapizar foal--a filly bred by Dell Ridge, Des Ryan, Ken Donworth, and Tony Dardis--were sent back through at November, and together grossed $320,000.

503 wnlg, c, The Factor--Ba Ba’s Bunch 130,000 Consigned by Select Sales, agent Purchased by Nick de Meric, agent Golden Pedigree purchased the winning mare Ba Ba’s Bunch for $16,500 while in foal to Friesan Fire (A.P. Indy) at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Sale. That seemed an especially fair price, considering the then 5-year-old was a half to MGSW Ventana (Toccet) and to SW Miss Challenge (More Than Ready). The resulting Friesan Fire foal sold as a weanling last year at November for $55,000, and Ba Ba’s Bunch’s latest offspring, this colt by War Front’s son The Factor, improved on the mare’s commercial record.

525 Cabo Queen racing/b’mare prospect 270,000 Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent LIX Purchased by Stonestreet Stables LLC Jim Moroz purchased the More Than Ready filly Cabo Queen for $40,000 at the 2011 Keeneland September Sale. Just a few weeks before the sale, Cabo Queen ran second in an optional claimer at Woodbine, but found the proverbial winner’s circle yesterday at Keeneland when offered as a racing or broodmare prospect.

FIRST 3 DAYS When we combine Fasig-Tipton=s sale Monday with Keeneland November Book 1 on Tuesday-Wednesday, we=re looking at the three key sessions of the Kentucky November Mixed Sales. There were a total of 647 horses (including late additions) catalogued on the three days, of which 381 (58.9%) were sold. Gross receipts over the three days were $159,530,000, for an average of $418,714. On the corresponding three days in 2013, 371 horses sold for a total of $160,391,000, and an average of $432,330. Given that mixed sale catalogues are far more subject to big swings in catalogue strength or weakness than the yearling sales, it=s very striking how similar the totals were to last year: the number of horses sold was up 3%, the gross was down by less than $1-million (one-half of one percent) and the average was down 3%. Along with owners the Power family, Lynam bred the five year old son of Dutch Art who will take up stallion duties for Darley at Kildangan Stud in Co Kildare in the spring. That connection has made the two Group 1's he has already won this season an incredibly special achievement for the trainer. "Only people who breed racehorses would know how special it is,@ Lynam offered. AYeah, buying one and owning it and training it and winning at Royal Ascot is brilliant, but breeding one is just that little bit better.@ He continued, "I think the whole thing is I'm partners with [owners David and Sabena Power] in him and in the whole family. I'm training him for them and they Slade Power takes the July Cup Racing Post Photo basically let you make all the decisions from what stallion you're using to how you're going to rear them the whole way along; where you're going to run next. They are the perfect owner in that they don't interfere, they support you 110% and they have the added ingredient in being very, very lucky and we are very, very lucky to train for them." Lynam's horses have clocked up more frequent flyer miles than the average Thoroughbred, as the trainer is not afraid to travel his stars in search of glory with the limited sprint dates on the racing calendar in Ireland and Europe. Last year, Slade Power journeyed to Hong Kong with stable companion Sole Power (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), who has a collection of international stamps on his passport. This year's G1 King's Stand S. and G1 Nunthorpe S. hero has run in Hong Kong, Dubai and France as well as England and Ireland during his career and will run next month in the G1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin. "Sole Power is a great traveller--he has been second in a Group 1 in Dubai and a Group 1 in Hong Kong,@ Lynam noted. AHe beat all the local horses in Hong Kong and Slade Power and they were good horses, and he got beaten by the best sprinter in the world [in Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}], who was Horse of the Year in Japan." Europe has only three top-level sprints over six furlongs for older horses, so travel is a necessity for Lynam and other Irish trainers with sizzling sprinters in their yards. Transporting horses hundreds and even thousands of miles is no easy task, he admits. "It is a hard ask for a trainer to go and compete in England,@ he revealed. AThe easy option is to run in Leopardstown or The Curragh. It is a bolder move to go abroad. A lot of trainers have done very well by travelling--Evanna McCutcheon and the people who have had Maarek (GB); Tom Hogan with Gordon Lord Byron (Ire)--so it can be done." The thrust of Lynam's success has been with the speedsters. His third Royal Ascot winner alongside the Powers was Anthem Alexander (Ire) ( {Aus}) in this year=s G2 Queen Mary S., but with another juvenile filly, he hopes to enjoy success at a longer distance. Agnes Stewart (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) is one of the leading fancies for next year's G1 Irish 1000 Guineas and possibly even the G1 Irish Oaks after her success in the G2 May Hill S. at Doncaster in September, which she followed up with a close second place behind Together Forever (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Fillies' Mile last month. Barande-Barbe Offers Cirrus Update... Corine Barande-Barbe hopes to return to Ascot with Cirrus Des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top {Ire}) on Qipco Champions Day next year, regardless of whether the Berkshire track employs covers over the whole of the track before the showpiece fixture. The meeting's spot in mid-October leaves it open to very soft ground, as was the case this year, although high-profile omissions such as Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Kingman (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) were down to other factors, after injury and a setback, respectively. Cirrus Des Aigles has been a regular since the inception of Champions Day, winning the G1 Champion S. in 2011 and finishing second the following year to Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and in 2013 behind Farhh (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Corrine Barande-Barbe Last month the gelding was Racing Post Photo fifth to Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) on ground officially described as heavy. News Today cont. Trials of covers are reportedly to begin in April, and Barande-Barbe said: "I would like to think that he could go back to Ascot next year, but we will see. He will tell me in the spring if he wants to do it. "I don't mind [the use of covers]. I think maybe it is better for horses to run in natural conditions, but either way, the ground will not be any faster than it was at Epsom in June [when Cirrus Des Aigles won the G1 Coronation Cup], so I don't see it being a problem." Now an 8-year-old, Cirrus Des Aigles picked up an injury in winning the Coronation Cup and was off the track until his return in the G2 Prix Dollar at Longchamp prior to his Ascot run, finishing first past the post but disqualified for interference. Barande-Barbe plans to head to Hong Kong with her stable star next month. "Everything is good. There is no problem. He is very, very well,@ she said. "The plan is to go to Hong Kong for the [G1 Hong Kong] Cup. He was third in the race last year and I hope we can win this time.@ Barande-Barbe continued, "I think this year, the Champion S. came a bit quick. Before he went to Longchamp, he had been stopped since June because of the injury, so it is not the same as previous years. "I think maybe if there had been another week between the Prix Dollar and Ascot it would have been better... Since he came back from Ascot he has just been getting better and better at home."
