  • Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival 2016
Oct 02, 2016 16:11 AEDT Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival 2016 The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the name of a Melbourne, Australia Thoroughbred horse racing series held annually during September to November highlighted by the 156th running of the time-honoured Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November. It brings together the very best of Australian and International thoroughbreds for 50 days of world-class horse racing action. The whole event has a carnival like atmosphere which brings the city of Melbourne to life during spring carnival time. Although Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival in Australia is held every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day, the Group One races in Melbourne are held almost exclusively throughout the carnival, which is traditionally placed between the football and cricket seasons. During the winter (where football is dominant), and summer (where cricket is dominant), racing takes a 'back seat' position in relation to the cricket or football in terms of media coverage and attendances, however in spring and autumn, the mass media turns its attention to the racing. There is also a Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival, a time where Group One races are also held. The 2016 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival you will find feature race dates for all Group 1, Group 2 & Group 3 races in Melbourne during the spring. In the groups of Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, feature event is the Group 1 race is the $400,000 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday 27th August 2016, while the 'race that stops a nation', the $6,200,000 (3200 Meters) Group 1 Melbourne Cup, will be held under handicap conditions on Tuesday 1st November 2016 at Flemington racecourse.

  • Welcome 2009
WELCOME 2009 The Australian Racing Board is pleased to publish the Eleventh Edition of The Australian Racing Fact Book, our annual reference guide to the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. The Board’s objective in publishing the Fact Book is to draw together under one cover the key results and statistics for the Australian thoroughbred sector for each season. While a number of books and journals report in detail particular aspects of Australian racing and breeding, we can well and truly say that the Australian Racing Board’s 1999 vision has been achieved, and the Fact Book has established itself as a useful and reliable source of the broadest range of information relating to Australian thoroughbred racing and breeding. The facts and figures contained in the Fact Book, will speak for themselves. To breathe some life into this statistical record it is useful to briefly touch on some of the stand-out achievements that have occurred during the period under review. Bart Cummings increased his Melbourne Cup tally to 12 in 2008 with Viewed winning the great race and looked destined to further increase his holdings to 13 this year after taking all before him in the spring with Viewed winning the Caulfield Cup, and So You Think winning the Cox Plate. Faint Perfume would also go on to win the VRC Oaks, however it was the Mark Kavanagh trained Shocking who spoilt the party by taking out the 2009 Melbourne Cup. Shocking’s victory in the Melbourne Cup magnified the highs and lows of racing, with Mark Kavanagh previously tasting defeat in the Cox Plate after saddling up the well fancied Whobegotyou, then having to scratch the favorite for the VRC Derby, Shamoline Warrior on the morning of the race.

Melbourne Cup History The first ever running of the Melbourne Cup was on a Thursday in 1861 and assembled a field of seventeen who raced for just 710 gold sovereigns (£710) cash and a gold watch in front of a crowd of around 4000 people. The Etienne De Mestre trained Archer was the first winner of what would go on to become Australia's most famous race and was ridden by John Cutts and ran a time of 3.52.00. History has it that Archer travelled by the steamboat 'City of Melbourne' along with his trainer to take his place in the Melbourne Cup. To prove it wasn't a fluke, Archer won the race the following year in front of 7000 people to win 810 gold sovereigns (£810) cash and a gold watch, to become the first dual winner of the Melbourne Cup. Melbourne Cup very early history – 1800’s In 1875 the Melbourne Cup moved to a Tuesday and the following year three-year-old filly Briseis created a slice of history when she won the Victoria Derby, Melbourne Cup and VRC Oaks over a period of six days. Melbourne Cup Day was declared a public holiday in Victoria in 1877 and just three years later a crowd of more than 100,000 attended Flemington for the first time on Cup day to witness the unbeaten Grand Flaneur take out the race that stops a nation. In 1890 a huge field of 39 horses assembled for the Melbourne Cup and grand galloper Carbine won the race in a then record time of 3.28.25, carrying 65.5 kilograms which was a record weight for the Melbourne Cup.
