The 61-year-old had been hospitalized in the ICU since suffering from cardiac arrest Feb. 24, confirmed Dilger=s longtime friend and business partner Mike Ryan. AWe were best friends for over 40 years,@ Ryan said. AIt is quite sudden and a big shock to us all. He was a very, very kind man and did so much for so many people. He would give you the shirt off his back. Gerry took tremendous personal pride in bringing students from Ireland, who aspired to be successful in the horse business, to work on his farm.

In a few years we will celebrate the bicentenary of racing in Australia. In the almost 200 years since its beginnings, a three day meeting held in Hyde Park in 1810, Australian racing has become not only one of this nation's best loved sports but also a major component of the economy. By 2001 thoroughbred racing has grown to become an industry that generates a gross economic impact of $7.74 billion, and provides work, directly and indirectly, for 249,000 people. When you bear this in mind it is only to be expected that there is keen interest, from both within the industry and more generally, in records relating to the health and performance of the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. Not surprisingly, some of their peers who were also supplied by the feed merchants at the centre of this Upcoming OTI Runners OTI Fun and Games OTI NEWS controversy, decided otherwise! A CONVERSATION Given the apparent clearance of the infected product in Ireland, O’Brien WITH could well have “ran the gauntlet” in the hope that any trace of Zilpaterol DEANE LESTER would have left the horses’ systems by race time. He chose instead to scratch and hence protect himself, his horses and indeed the industry from possible negative consequences.
