  • Altior As Brave As He Is Brilliant
THURSDAY, 14 MARCH 2019 QUORTO INJURED, GUINEAS OFF THE TABLE ALTIOR AS BRAVE Group 1 winner Quorto (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has sustained an AS HE IS BRILLIANT injury in Dubai where he was wintering and will miss the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas, Godolphin announced on Wednesday morning. The Godolphin homebred >TDN Rising Star= is undefeated in three starts to date, including the July 14 G2 Superlative S. and the Sept. 16 G1 National S. when last seen. He was one of the leading fancies for the first British Classic of the season, which will take place over Newmarket=s Rowley Mile on May 4. AUnfortunately Quorto has suffered a soft tissue injury in training in Dubai which will mean he will have to miss the 2000 Guineas,@ said trainer Charlie Appleby. "It's a real shame as we had high hopes for him this year. We'll know more when he's scanned for a second time in a couple of weeks. It's too early to say when he could be back in action but we've been here before with these injuries and we'll see how he recovers." Altior & Nico de Boinville | Racing Post by Emma Berry CHELTENHAM, UKCIt takes a great horse to win championship races, but it takes a true champion to fight his way back for glory just as it looks as if he is beaten. At Cheltenham on Wednesday, the remarkable Altior (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) claimed not just his second G1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase but his fourth win at the Festival and his 18th consecutive victory to equal the winning streak of one of the track's great heroes, Big Buck's (Fr) (Cadoudal {Fr}).

  • Starspangledbanner Ready to Fly High
SATURDAY, 15 DECEMBER 2018 crop produced 14 runners that achieved RPRs in excess of 95, STARSPANGLEDBANNER with five of those reaching in excess of 110. It's hard not to view this as a sensational performance given the low numbers of READY TO FLY HIGH foals produced from a i15,000 covering fee. However, his subfertility put paid to his prospects of producing bigger crops in the years that followed, with his efforts in 2012 prior to being returned to training yielding just 11 foals in 2013. That would prove to be his last season covering mares in Ireland until 2016, with small crops of foals from mostly moderate mares in Australia in the meantime. Despite these restricted opportunities, Starspangledbanner still showed what he could do as a sire, with his 2015 crop in Australia producing the listed winner and Group 2-placed performer Thrillster (Aus) as well as the exciting Hong Kong-based sprinter Styling City (Aus), who has won four of his first six starts. Cont. p2 Starspangledbanner | Coolmore IN TDN AMERICA TODAY By Kevin Blake Over two years ago, the tale of Starspangledbanner (Aus) WINSTAR JUSTIFIES LOOKING TO THE FUTURE (Choisir {Aus}) was recounted on these pages. • Further Speculation
Bill Oppenheim, February 18, 2015-Further Speculation FURTHER SPECULATION “There were only 4% more catalogued (479 vs. 461) to Goffs February Mixed Sale last Last week I inveigled TDN International Editor Kelsey week, but a massive improvement in the clearance rate resulted in 30% more horses sold than last year, with a 31% gain in gross. The percentage of withdrawals dropped Riley into offering her Acolumnist=s choice@ picks for from 19% to 14%; and the percentage sold of those which went through the ring success among four crops of unproven North American improved from 68% to 81%, meaning the percentage sold of those catalogued jumped stallions with first foals 2013-2016, which we from 55% to 69%. Very strong demand for short yearlings.” – Bill Oppenheim presented as well as my own. This week--special treat-- we have expanded our scope even further by asking TDN=s other columnist, Andrew Caulfield, to weigh in along with us on European sire prospects from the same four >sire crops.= Today, the three of us make our personal picks for F2013 European sires, with their first 2-year-olds racing this year, and F2014 sires, with their first yearlings--and this time we have a >main pick= and an "under-10,000" (or "10,000 and under," depending) pick. Next week we=ll make our picks among the F2015 (first foals 2015) and F2016 (standing first season 2015) prospects. We agreed to rule out only horses standing for 50,000 or more, a list that consists only of F2014 Frankel and F2016=s Australia and Kingman, since they are all great prospects, and
