In a few years we will celebrate the bicentenary of racing in Australia. In the almost 200 years since its beginnings, a three day meeting held in Hyde Park in 1810, Australian racing has become not only one of this nation's best loved sports but also a major component of the economy. By 2001 thoroughbred racing has grown to become an industry that generates a gross economic impact of $7.74 billion, and provides work, directly and indirectly, for 249,000 people. When you bear this in mind it is only to be expected that there is keen interest, from both within the industry and more generally, in records relating to the health and performance of the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. New. kh ________________________________________ Supplementary Reports: Canterbury Park Wednesday 19 August 2020 Race 1 – Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1200m: Sacred Captain – Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the death of the gelding. A necropsy report from the University Teaching Hospital Camden found that the gelding suffered exercise-associated sudden death as a result of cardiorespiratory failure. Stewards considered veterinary treatment records provided by trainer Mr J. Sargent. A post-mortem urine sample taken from the gelding returned a negative result to all prohibited substances. Having considered the veterinary evidence from Racing NSW Club's Veterinary Officer, Dr Toby Koenig, along with the necropsy report and the stable's veterinary and treatment records, the Stewards determined that Sacred Captain displayed no identifiable pre-existing condition that may have led to its death. Gosford 28 August 2020 Race 7 – Adam Duggan Racing CG&E Benchmark 64 Handicap 1200m: Winning Brothers – Trainer Mr P. Robl reported that he was satisfied with the post-race condition of the gelding, but advised that it will barrier trial prior to its next race start.     FEBRUARY 2020 NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Welcome back to another year of membership, providing advocacy, information, member benefits and social events. What an exciting time in racing we are heading into. The Sydney Autumn Carnival kicks off on 14 March and is an explosion of top class racing, attracting horses from all over Australia and beyond to partake in the huge prizemoney. The NSWROA has new initiatives planned for this year to not only grow our membership, and therefore our voice in the industry, but also to enhance the membership experience. A day at the Scone Races, followed by a visit to Vinery Stud was held for members late January. This was a very enjoyable day for our guests and a change of pace from our usual city-based events. We also presented a trophy for their 2yo race of the day. We are holding our popular ‘Apollo Stakes Day’ event on 15 February and arrangements for our flagship event, Racing’s Night of Champions (13 August) have already begun. Unfortunately, our very worthy charity Spinal Cord Injuries Australia is not in a position to fulfil their role as our fundraising body this year, but we hope to have them back in years to come.
