It is important for us to keep the database current and be able to communicate with members on a regular basis. New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ 2 Association Annual Financial Report PRESIDENTS REPORT It has been a busy and challenging year and a lot has happened since my first annual report twelve months ago. It seems a long time since the outbreak of Covid-19, the shutdown of racing and the emergency support package Winston Peters and the coalition Government provided to help the TAB which was on the verge of insolvency. The Covid-19 situation has changed the way business is conducted around the world and our industry has had to adapt to this. However, as we have seen many times over the years the Thoroughbred Industry has the ability to bounce back from adversity and we now need to improve outcomes for stakeholders. The coalition Government has delivered on its promise to create a framework that will enable the industry to take the reins and move itself forward as a more cohesive unit. The NZTBA staff and council members have been doing their best to assist with this by providing representation for the breeding industry in many different areas. The NZTBA have contributed a great deal during the year on issues such as education, animal welfare, Healthy Rivers Waikato, Covid 19 protocols, Racing Bill submissions and animal health COMMERCIAL PARTNERS just to name a few. A big thank you to our commercial partners who make I’m sure you will all agree Justine Sclater our CEO and a valuable contribution to our revenue. Please wherever Corrina Holmes our Financial Officer have done a great possible contact them if you have an opportunity job with their communication and information sharing to utilise their services. I would like to thank Justine, Corrina and all Global Money Transfers, BNZ and we welcome Shelly our council members on behalf of the industry for their Tweedy and Associates Chartered Accountants. support and efforts. There were 21 individual 8. This constitutional change will come into effect after Gr.1 winners in the 2019/20 season produced by New this year’s AGM. Our council will now consist of three Zealand breeders including the likes of Bostonian, (3) regional members to be nominated and voted on Melody Belle, Te Akau Shark, Probabeel and Beauty by the members of each particular region and five (5) Generation. The New Zealand bred thoroughbred is able National members to be nominated and voted on by all to compete at the highest level in many different racing members. Going forward this will enable us to have a jurisdictions and every horse bred has the opportunity to more diverse range of skills at our council table. contribute to this proud history of global success. As a result of these changes we will be having an This year Covid-19 protocols have meant the election for the first time in 20 years for our Northern cancellation of a number of well supported branch Region representative. I would like to thank the three activities including the regional stallion parades, the retiring councillors Gus Wigley, Chris Dennis and new National Gr.1 Awards dinner and the Hawkes Bay Rochelle Kerr for their contributions over the years and weanling walk. Detailed financial information and other office activities can be found further on in this report. Our office is to be commended for doing such a great job with the NZTBA’s finances. A net surplus after taxation of $63,452 is a great result for our association. John Thompson President New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ 3 Association Annual Financial Report FROM THE OFFICE continue to ensure we as an industry have a sustainable future and developing future environmental stewardship specific to Equine. Generous contributors to this fund were the Waikato and Auckland Branches of the NZTBA, Cambridge Stud, Brighthill Farm, Wentwood Grange and Rich Hill Stud. Welfare also continues to be of importance and traceability with the introduction of 30 day foal notifications a good start, in December we will participate in a welfare forum group with other industry stakeholders. The Association has two beautiful commissioned sculptures by Cambridge sculpture Nicola Lewis for our coveted Sir Patrick and Justine Lady Hogan Breeder of the Year and our Eight Carat Broodmare of the Year awards. MONDAY, 30 JANUARY, 2017 NO RETIREMENT PLANS FOR STAND GUARD MORE THAN READY, Despite breaking the record for the number of wins achieved on an all-weather surface with Stand Guard (GB) (Danehill) THE FREQUENT FLYER trainer John Butler has no intention of allowing the 13-year-old rest up for too long. In winning a mile and a half handicap at Kempton on Saturday Stand Guard posted his 28th win on the all-weather eclipsing the previous record set by Don Cantillon=s La Estrella (Theatrical {Ire}) in December of 2015. "He got the record and he's good and fine after the race,@ reported Butler. "We'll assess him during the week, give him a few easy days and make a plan from there. There are races for him. The handicapper will have a say on Tuesday, and we'll see which bracket he is in, but if he's OK there is every possibility he might run again,@ Butler added. Bred by Juddmonte Farms, Stand Guard raced only once for Khalid Abdullah and Sir Michael Stoute before being sold at Tattersalls in 2007 for 22,000gns. Since then he has had six different trainers over an 83 race career and his victory on Saturday was his 17th for Butler. • Tough Road Ahead= for Post-Brexit Horse Transport
SUNDAY, 17 JANUARY 2021 >TOUGH ROAD AHEAD= ABDULLAH=S FAMILY AVERY COMMITTED@ TO JUDDMONTE FOR POST-BREXIT HORSE It will be business at usual at Juddmonte Farms after Juddmonte Group Chief Executive Douglas Erskine Crum told ITV TRANSPORT on Saturday that there will be Ano change@ following the death of the global operation=s founder Prince Khalid Abdullah last week. Abdullah had raced 118 Group or Grade I winners since entering the game just over 40 years ago, of which he bred 102 of those. He owned stud farms in the UK, Ireland and Kentucky. AThe family has been for some time and still is very committed to keeping Juddmonte as it is going, focusing on the broodmare band, focusing on the homebred operation,@ Erskine Crum told ITV Racing. AOne of the last decisions in which the prince was involved was the matings for this year, in other words where his 200-odd broodmares are going to go. Whether they are going to go to Frankel, Kingman or some of the great stallions across the world. Cont. p5 Horse transport between Britain and the EU has become much more complicated | Getty Images By Emma Berry While Britain, Ireland and France are competing nations in the racing and breeding world, in recent years the Tripartite Agreement (TPA) has significantly eased the regular interaction between the three, particularly in regard to transporting broodmares and racehorses. The TPA recognised the high health status of Thoroughbreds and allowed for free equine movement between the countries. All that changed, however, when Britain=s departure from the European Union was finalised with the end of the transition period on Dec.
