MANDALOUN TURNS THE CLAIRIERE A FITTING WINNER OF THE TABLES IN Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra carried the famed burgundy and gold silks of Stonestreet Farm to six victories, four of which were Grade Is, including the GI Preakness S. and GI Woodward S. So, it was only fitting that another filly carrying the colors of Barbara Banke's operation, Clairiere (), won that Horse of the Year's namesake Grade II race at the Fair Grounds Saturday. The event, which produced GI winners in 2018 and 2019, offered 50 points towards this year's run for the lillies. Clairiere rallied strongly from well back to capture her 1 1/16-mile debut at Downs Oct. 25. She made another late run for the lead in that venue's GII Golden Rod S. Nov. 28, but was collared by the re-opposing Travel Column (Frosted) and forced to settled for second. Cont. p4

Running three-wide, Mandoulon overtook Midnight Bourbon in mid-stretch and charged clear with determined strides to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Proxy pushed past Midnight Bourbon late to be second. "He's had two great works since so we expected him to move forward,@ Cox said. AI think the blinkers did help out. Florent [Geroux] immediately made a comment after the race. Much more focused in the post parade, more focused on his job. We didn't put a bunch of cup on him, just like a one-inch cup, but it seems to have done the trick to get him mentally where he needs to be.@ As for what's next, Cox said, AThe [the GII ] is definitely going to be in play. We will talk it over with Garrett O'Rourke and the Juddmonte team and come up with a game plan. I'm very proud of the colt. Merneith | Benoit Photo AI=m just so happy, it=s another dream of mine to win for Bob Baffert,@ said pilot Edwin Maldonado, who was visibly excited at the wire and on the gallop out. AI had like five fillies for the race and I ended up with three and I needed a rider,@ Baffert said as to how Maldonado, who hadn't ridden for him in at least the last five years, landed the mount. AThe one thing about Edwin is he=s probably one of the best speed gate riders there is. This filly, every time I run her, I expect her to win and she gets beat and I=ve been really surprised she hadn=t done what she=s done and today she showed it. I=m just really happy for him, he did a fantastic job getting out of the gate, she relaxed. She looks like American Pharoah to me, when she came in, she looked almost like a spitting image of him. I=m glad they are starting to run now. To me it means more to American Pharoah than anything else but the ownership, the prince in Saudi Arabia, I was telling him how high I was on this filly. Today is the day she finally showed what she has and that was a pretty tough field of horses that she beat.
