Welcome 2009 WELCOME 2009 The Australian Racing Board is pleased to publish the Eleventh Edition of The Australian Racing Fact Book, our annual reference guide to the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. The Board’s objective in publishing the Fact Book is to draw together under one cover the key results and statistics for the Australian thoroughbred sector for each season. While a number of books and journals report in detail particular aspects of Australian racing and breeding, we can well and truly say that the Australian Racing Board’s 1999 vision has been achieved, and the Fact Book has established itself as a useful and reliable source of the broadest range of information relating to Australian thoroughbred racing and breeding. The facts and figures contained in the Fact Book, will speak for themselves. To breathe some life into this statistical record it is useful to briefly touch on some of the stand-out achievements that have occurred during the period under review. Bart Cummings increased his Melbourne Cup tally to 12 in 2008 with Viewed winning the great race and looked destined to further increase his holdings to 13 this year after taking all before him in the spring with Viewed winning the Caulfield Cup, and So You Think winning the Cox Plate. Faint Perfume would also go on to win the VRC Oaks, however it was the Mark Kavanagh trained Shocking who spoilt the party by taking out the 2009 Melbourne Cup. Shocking’s victory in the Melbourne Cup magnified the highs and lows of racing, with Mark Kavanagh previously tasting defeat in the Cox Plate after saddling up the well fancied Whobegotyou, then having to scratch the favorite for the VRC Derby, Shamoline Warrior on the morning of the race. The Western Australian trained, Scenic Blast claimed the Champion Racehorse of the year Award for trainer Dan Morton, taking out the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap before venturing over to the UK to take out the Group 1 King Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. The Queensland trained Phelan Ready took out the honors as Champion 2yo of the year after winning both the Magic Millions and the Golden Slipper. The double capped off a stellar career for Phelan Ready’s co-trainer, Bruce McLachlan who sadly passed away after training more than 3000 winners during his 40 year career. Compiling the Fact Book depends on the co-operation of a range of people and organisations, and our genuine thanks are expressed to them for their willing assistance. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the enterprise and excellent work performed by Jake Howard and Ashley Broderick, the Fact Book’s editor and compiler respectively. By 2001 thoroughbred racing has grown to become an industry that generates a gross economic impact of $7.74 billion, and provides work, directly and indirectly, for 249,000 people. When you bear this in mind it is only to be expected that there is keen interest, from both within the industry and more generally, in records relating to the health and performance of the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. Our intention in producing the Fact Book is to meet this demand by assembling a range of useful facts and figures as a handy guide to any person seeking information on major aspects of the industry.

    Islamic Ethics in Australian Muslim Everyday Life: A Shi’ite Perspective Mohamad Younes Master’s Thesis in Sociology Spring Term 2017 Humanities and Communication Arts Western Sydney University 1 17481784 Mohamad Younes 2 17481784 Mohamad Younes ABSTRACT Despite the strong emphasis on ethics within the Islamic tradition, Islamic ethics itself is scarcely represented as a discipline within academic scholarship (Ansari 1989). Even within this area, Islamic ethics have predominantly been studied from Sunni perspectives, with little attention being paid to Shi’ite or other minority understandings. This thesis will, therefore, use qualitative data collection methods of semi-structured in-depth interviews and focus groups, to sociologically study the perceptions, understandings, and applications of Islamic ethics in Australian Shi’ite Muslim everyday living. It will investigate the overarching understanding of Islamic ethics and its specific application in Australian Shi’ite Muslim context. The project's objective, therefore, is twofold: one to strengthen Islamic ethics as an independent discipline; and two to address the scant attention Shi’ite Islamic ethics has received in Islamic ethics scholarship generally. Conceptually, this project will contribute to the understanding of Islamic ethics through a particular analysis of Shi’ite Islamic ethics in an Australian Shi’ite context. This is significant as specific understandings of Islamic ethics in certain contexts help to explain how minority groups such as Shi’ite Muslims develop their own ethical standards to shape social relations in society. In addition, this thesis argues for Shi’ite Islamic ethics to be highly Imamate based; that is, very reliant on the actions and sayings of 12 divinely guided Imams (leaders).
