WELCOME From 16 September through to 7 November, Royal Randwick and Rosehill Gardens host world-class racing and entertainment across our global city with 28 Group and Blacktype races and more than $41 million in prizemoney. The $15 million TAB Everest at Royal Randwick on 17 October and the second running of the $7.5 million Iron Jack Golden Eagle at Rosehill Gardens are game changers in Australian racing. Their innovation in just a few short years has been recognised across international jurisdictions and brought new eyes through media outlets to our Club’s racing. These two races plus the traditional Spring highlights of The TAB Epsom, Heineken Metropolitan, Darley Princess Series and the 3YO Classic De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Stakes have all helped to make the Sydney Spring a destination for not only visiting horses and connections from New Zealand but racing fans and tourists across Australia. Further, they have helped to extend the Sydney Spring program well into November at this traditional and popular time for Australian racing. Of course, 2020 has been a challenging year through the major disruption of COVID-19 and we will race in front of reduced crowds at our racecourses for the safety and health of all concerned. This makes your role in covering our racing even more important to the sport – along with all the colour and entertainment that goes with it. Whilst our numbers on course will be reduced, the Australian Turf Club has created new ways for people to be a part of the fun. Our new Spring Fashion Stakes digital competition is open Australia-wide with a male and female winner selected by an expert panel of judges across key racedays. Entrants can send their best photo or video and upload to theraces.com.au/stylestakes to be in the running to win thousands of dollars in prizes. A social highlight is the Everest Carnival Fashion Lunch on TAB Epsom Day at Royal Randwick. The event will feature a three-course menu by ATC Guest Chef Dany Karam of Black Bar & Grill, the Everest Carnival Spring Fashion Runway presented by Vogue Australia showcasing the latest Australian spring fashion trends, and a performance by Nat Bassingthwaite along with a $30,000 Cerrone necklace as a major raffle prize. Edwina McCann – Editor-In-Chief, Vogue Australia – will be the Women of Influence speaker at the Fashion Lunch. The Australian Turf Club and Racing NSW have been a world leading team over the past few months to keep Sydney racing operating through these times, something no other sport or racing jurisdiction has been able to match. We look forward over the coming months to continuing to present world class racing and, especially, reading and seeing the wonderful stories and colour these events bring to everyone involved, from the jockeys and trainers, to the owners and connections, and above all the great stars themselves in the thoroughbred horses. • History of Thoroughbred Breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley
Thoroughbred Breeding History in the Upper Hunter Valley Executive Summary The history of thoroughbred breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley dates back to the very early days of settlement with the importation of the TB Stallion ‘Crawford’ to Potter Macqueen’s Segenhoe Stud in 1826. Since then there has been an expanding continuum. In the early 21st century the valley is acknowledged as one of the premier TB breeding areas of the world comparing favourably with both Newmarket UK and Kentucky USA. There have been a number of iterations when one area of the valley or another has reigned supreme. Broadly speaking the region has been divided into at least three geographical clusters: Denman and environs including Widden, Bylong and Baerami Valleys plus Jerrys Plains, Muswellbrook and district, Scone and region with Merriwa and also latterly the Murrurundi/Timor precinct. It might be reasonable to argue that the TB enterprises were gradually squeezed northwards by the encroaching coal mining industry from earlier establishments in the lower Hunter Valley; especially around Maitland. Remarkably the ‘mud map’ of thoroughbred studs in 1900 very closely resembles that for 2016 with ownership the only issue. There is one notable exception: Widden Stud. The Hon James White was the pioneer leviathan owner-breeder in the early days of metropolitan racing in both Sydney and Melbourne. His trail blazing forays included Epsom Derby assault on the august Jockey Club establishment in England. During the latter part of the 19th century the Thompson family of the Widden & Bylong Valleys were preeminent. Brothers W & F. A. Moses sustained a brief but exceptionally productive period at ‘Arrowfield’ (now ‘Coolmore’) near Jerrys Plains early in the 20th century.
