THE ATLANTIC MIND: ZEPHANIAH KINGSLEY, SLAVERY, AND THE POLITICS OF RACE IN THE ATLANTIC WORLD by MARK J. FLESZAR Under the Direction of Dr. Jared Poley and Dr. H. Robert Baker ABSTRACT Enlightenment philosophers had long feared the effects of crisscrossing boundaries, both real and imagined. Such fears were based on what they considered a brutal ocean space frequented by protean shape-shifters with a dogma of ruthless exploitation and profit. This intellectual study outlines the formation and fragmentation of a fluctuating worldview as experienced through the circum-Atlantic life and travels of merchant, slaveowner, and slave trader Zephaniah Kingsley during the Era of Revolution. It argues that the process began from experiencing the costs of loyalty to the idea of the British Crown and was tempered by the pervasiveness of violence, mobility, anxiety, and adaptation found in the booming Atlantic markets of the Caribbean during the Haitian Revolution. -

TABBY: THE ENDURING BUILDING MATERIAL OF COASTAL GEORGIA by TAYLOR P. DAVIS (Under direction of Dr. Reinberger) ABSTRACT Tabby is a unique building material found along the coast of the Southeastern United States. This material is all that remains above grade of many past coastal cultures and illustrates much of the history of Coastal Georgia. In this master’s thesis, I present the following areas of research: 1) an explanation of the history and origins of the different generations of tabby, 2) a list of historical tabby sites that I feel are pertinent to its history and cultural significance, and 3) the production of samples of tabby through historical means and the analysis of their compressive strength. With these three concentrations of study, I am able to compile new information on this culturally significant building material. Bradley “Ooman’s Wuk: Gullah Womanism in the Creative Works of African American Women” investigates Gullah history and culture as a usable past for modern African American female artists. This project explores the history of rice production and the vital but under-discussed role of women that led to the African retentions still at work on the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia. By exploring the often disavowed female roles, this dissertation argues that once acknowledged, the Gullah woman’s role as ‘keepa a da kulca’ formulates a Gullah womanism or a form of cultural and community activism that is found in the daily lives of the female descendants of Africans living on the Sea Islands. -

Allah is the Highest, Most Powerful Nicholas Majidi HI 460 Senior Research Seminar in History Dr. Tona Hangen April 25, 2016 Majidi 2 According to Islamic theology, in the year 610 C.E, the angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammad of Arabia as he was meditating in the Cave of Hira alone. The angel is believed to have spoken to Muhammad, and specifically spoke these specific words to him; “Read in the name of thy lord and cherisher who created: Created man out of a clot of congealed blood. Read!And thy lord is most bountiful, He who taught the use of pen; Taught man that which he knew not.”1 This phrase is believed to be the first words spoken to Muhammad, and is considered to be the first revelation. Many more revelations would occur. This is what is officially would be proclaimed as Islam which is based off of Gabriel’s revelation; “There is no god but God (Allah) and Muhammad is his Messenger.” These messages were memorized, organized and compiled into a collection of revelations, known as the Qur’an. The same exact message that the angel Gabriel spoke to Muhammad and in which then Muhammad spoke to his companions in Mecca would reach the Southern region of the United States of America twelve-hundred years later, preached and practiced by a slave from Africa. Who was this slave that practiced Islam and how did his faith and ability to read and write allow for him to maintain the position as the head driver for the plantation he worked on? That slave that indeed practiced Islam and possessed the ability to read and write was known as Bilali Muhammad. -

After the Jacobite rebellion in 1745-46, the Clans of Scotland's highlands were disbanded. The clans had been ruled by chiefs who treated their subjects as family members; most of them were. As the 18th century progressed, many of the chiefs got a taste of the rich life of the lowlands and London. It was not enough to have the wealth of land and warriors. They now needed cash. The lairds searched for ways to make more profit. They "improved" their land by introducing large scale sheep farming. In the process, many of them brutally evicted people whose families had resided on the property for many generations. It is now known as the Highland Clearances. In the county of Sutherland, the daughter of the last Earl married an English nobleman, the Marquis of Stafford, owner of a very large estate in England. -

A critical look at different preservation strategies enables the development of best practices for appropriate tabby preservation. These best practices may be applied to an array of sites but are tested in this thesis as they are applied to Chocolate Plantation. Chocolate Plantation is a historic site from the early nineteenth century composed primarily of tabby buildings on the Georgia barrier island of Sapelo. Constructed during the Spalding Era of tabby, between the years 1790 and 1875, Chocolate is representative of plantation design in the most active era of tabby construction. -

In large part, the record of their individual lives is lost. But there is much to be learned about who these women and men were and what they believed in through the lives that their descendants lead today. On these shores, the roots of the African American spiritual experience. run deep. ART JONES: These were really deeply spiritual people who had centuries of spirituality behind them, and very long established traditions. And even though some of the specific memories of those religious practices were wiped out as families were traded on the auction block and so on, they still had a very deep spiritual consciousness and spiritual sensibility. NARRATOR: Through the middle passage, sale on the auction block, and endless back breaking labor black people have called upon a spiritual legacy that defiantly proclaims: “I am a child of God, a servant of Allah, a child of Shango, a child of Oshun no matter what anyone does to me.” RACHEL HARDING: It's a way of saying that as a human being I have a right to joy, I have a right to music, I have a right to story and I have a right to the tree of life. NARRATOR: Present in each generation was the faith that a better day would come – that God would send deliverance. But deliverance did not come overnight. -
'Griotic' Methodology: African Historiography, Identity Politics And

Toure 2011 Abstract This study assesses the historical and educational implications of a ‘griotic’ methodology that was employed by free African Americans in the antebellum North. This griotic methodology involved a textual production of history by and for African Americans that was derived from a West African oral/performance basis of history. The study therefore examines how a distinctive approach of history production developed among free African Americans from the late 1700s through the 1830s as they appropriated, engaged and/or countered prevailing European American discourses. Most important to the study is how these early intellectuals sought to vindicate, historicize and liberate themselves through re-presenting the idea of ‘Africa’ as the metaphorical source and destiny of their race. Educational implications of this griotic methodology are subsequently highlighted in the study as it is applied as pedagogy in a post-secondary classroom to empower African African students. In order to establish an endogenous prism through which to examine this distinctive African American methodology, this study integrates a number of qualitative and historiographical components: an intellectual autobiography of the author who is an African American male educator; oral histories of African and African American history professors; and assessments of recent African American scholarship that focus on early African identity politics in the Americas.
